Surgical management of the lens and retrolenticular fibrotic membranes associated with persistent fetal vasculature.

PURPOSE: To evaluate a surgical technique that allows safe, effective, near-total removal of retrolenticular fibrotic membranes in eyes with persistent fetal vasculature syndrome (PFVS). SETTING: Pediatric ophthalmologist's academic practice. METHODS: This retrospective review comprised 5 children (6 eyes) who had excision of a retrolenticular fibrovascular membrane during cataract surgery over a 6-month period. Long, spoke-like radial incisions of the membrane were made to the ciliary processes, resulting in wedge-shaped segmentation of the membrane. A vitrector was used to excise each wedg

Analysis of resident-performed manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS): an efficacious approach to mature cataracts.

To examine and improve outcomes of resident-performed manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS) cases via analysis of visual recovery, intraoperative adverse events, and early postoperative course. Particular focus was directed toward mature cataracts extracted by MSICS. A retrospective review was performed to identify MSICS cases performed by resident surgeons unfamiliar with the technique (initial ten cases) in an academic setting. Preoperative history, intraoperative adverse events, and postoperative course were reviewed. Of 30 cases identified, mean preoperative acuity was 1.8 ± 0.9 l

Cataracts in children.

Bilateral congenital cataract is the most common cause of treatable childhood blindness. Nuclear cataract is usually present at birth and is nonprogressive, whereas lamellar cataract usually develops later and is progressive. Surgery must be performed promptly in cases with dense congenital cataract; if nystagmus has developed, the amblyopia is irreversible. A treatment regimen based on surgery within 2 months of birth combined with prompt optical correction of the aphakia and aggressive occlusion therapy with frequent follow-up has been successful in unilateral and bilateral cases. Both anter

Combined Cataract and Corneal Transplantation Surgery Without Viscosurgical Devices.

BACKGROUND: The most common complications after performing the triple Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK), which combines the cataract phacoemulsification, intraocular lens implantation and DSAEK procedure, are detachment or decentration of the donor lamella and postoperative interface haze. One reason for this is the retained viscoelastic used during surgery. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe triple DSAEK procedure without the usage of viscoelastic and to discuss its potential benefits on surgical outcomes. METHODS: The surgical procedures and outcomes of p
