This study investigates FLNC mutations in Chinese cardiomyopathy patients. Background: Inherited cardiomyopathies, including dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM), and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) are major heart failure causes. FLNC, critical for muscle structure, is implicated in myofibrillar myopathy and isolated DCM (3-4% cases) with ventricular arrhythmias. Missense variants are linked to HCM and protein aggregation. A cohort of 25 patients with pathogenic/likely pathogenic FLNC mutations (2022-2025, Bei

The benefits and risks of endomyocardial biopsy in infants, children and adolescents were determined by reviewing the indications for and complications and results of 66 procedures in 53 patients aged 2 months to 20 years. One patient had a pneumothorax, and three had a right ventricular perforation. Ventricular tachycardia developed in four patients; it was treated with lidocaine in three and was self-limited in one. The procedure was unsuccessful in two patients. Among 25 patients with a prebiopsy diagnosis of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, microscopic features were consistent with cardi

Amyloid transthyretin cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) is an infiltrative cardiomyopathy and an underdiagnosed cause of heart failure (HF) across the left ventricular ejection fraction spectrum. As disease-modifying therapies prolong survival, outcomes are increasingly shaped by non-amyloid-specific HF care. Restrictive physiology and frequent autonomic dysfunction create a narrow therapeutic window in which small changes in preload or afterload may precipitate hypotension, renal injury, and low-output symptoms. Loop diuretics remain foundational, requiring individualized dosing, preference for agents

Background Antimalarials (AMs) are widely used in the treatment of connective tissue diseases. Their main side effect is retinal damage, while heart disease has been described in isolated cases. The aim of this study is to systematically review the existing literature on AM-induced cardiomyopathy (AMIC). Methods The PubMed database was searched for heart biopsy-confirmed AMIC cases. Information on demographics, clinical presentation, concomitant AM-related toxicity, cardiological investigations, treatment and outcome were collected. Descriptive statistics were used. Results Forty-seven cases (

The heart may be affected directly or indirectly by a variety of protozoa and helminths. This involvement may manifest in different ways, but the syndromes resulting from impairment of the myocardium and pericardium are the most frequent. The myocardium may be invaded by parasites that trigger local inflammatory response with subsequent myocarditis or cardiomyopathy, as occurs in Chagas disease, African trypanosomiasis, toxoplasmosis, trichinellosis and infection with free-living amoebae. In amoebiasis and echinococcosis, the pericardium is the structure most frequently involved with consequen

Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the cardiomyocytes that affects their structural function, leading to heart failure (HF). Non-ischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM) includes a subtype of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM), and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). These types of cardiomyopathies have no coronary artery vessel involvement. The most common cause of NICM is DCM. In the ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) subtype, the utilization of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) has been effective in the prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD). However, the relevance of

A previously healthy woman in her forties with a six-month history of persistent coughing, breathlessness and fatigue was referred to our hospital for further evaluation. She was initially treated with antibiotics for a possible respiratory tract infection but with only minor effect. A chest x-ray and computer tomography (CT) of the thorax demonstrated a solid tumour in the right lung hilus. Bronchoscopy revealed slight oedema of the bronchial mucous membrane in the area in question. Cytological examination of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) showed normal respiratory epithelial cells. Detection and characterisation of cardiac arrhythmias in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) has already been documented in various studies. However, similar studies have not been reported for other forms of feline cardiomyopathy. The clinical records of 13 client-owned cats diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM), arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) and non-specific cardiomyopathy (NSCM) that underwent Holter recording at the time of diagnosis were reviewed retrospectively. Eight cats had signs of congestive heart failure at presentation, one cat had a histo

The clinical significance of the mode of left ventricular (LV) diastolic filling in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was studied by the LV inflow velocity patterns (LVIF) of pulsed Doppler echocardiography and LV early diastolic filling rates (V2) of radionuclide (RI) angiography. The relationship between the deceleration time (DT) obtained from LVIF and the V2 was evaluated in 34 patients with nonobstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and in nine with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HOCM), and the results were compared with those of 10 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), of

Dietary copper restriction in rats results in cardiomyopathy. In rats fed copper-restricted diets from weaning for 5 to 8 weeks, a concentric hypertrophy is apparent, whereas postweaning copper restriction does produce cardiomyopathy without apparent hypertrophy. Both sets of circumstances appear to affect the integrity of the basal laminae of cardiac myocytes and capillaries. In rats fed copper-restricted diets from weaning, decreases in cytochrome c oxidase are related not only to copper's role as a coenzyme, but also to a marked decrease in the nuclear encoded subunits of the enzyme complex

BACKGROUND: Population-based data on the incidence of pediatric cardiomyopathy are rare because of the lack of large, prospective studies.
METHODS: Since 1996 the Pediatric Cardiomyopathy Registry sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has collected data on all children with newly diagnosed cardiomyopathy in New England and the Central Southwest region (Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas) of the United States. We report on all children in these regions who received this diagnosis between 1996 and 1999.
RESULTS: We identified 467 cases of cardiomyopathy, for an overall annual i

Currently, echocardiography is the technique of choice in the noninvasive assessment of left ventricular (LV) function. Unlike the assessment of LV systolic function, its role is limited in the quantification of LV diastolic function where only global LV filling can be assessed. Tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE) is a recently introduced imaging technique which allows for direct assessment of LV myocardial contraction and relaxation. Therefore, parameters derived from TDE showed provide a more accurate assessment of LV systolic and diastolic function. Doppler myocardial velocity gradient (M

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac amyloidosis is a restrictive cardiomyopathy caused by extracellular deposition of misfolded proteins. Abdominal fat pad fine-needle aspiration (FPFNA) has been described as a minimally invasive diagnostic tool for systemic and cardiac amyloidosis.
METHODS: We present a step-by-step description of the aspiration technique, including sample handling, Congo red staining under polarized light, accompanied by illustrative images.
CONCLUSION: Abdominal fat pad FPFNA is a simple, inexpensive, and safe procedure. According to published data, it offers moderate to high sensitivi

Late-stage eosinophilic myocarditis (or Löffler endocarditis) is known to occur in patients with hypereosinophilic syndrome and can cause restrictive cardiomyopathy. Eosinophilic myocarditis is an acute life-threatening inflammatory disease of the heart that can be associated with cancer. We report a case of a 70-year-old White woman, previously treated for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in remission, admitted for acute dyspnea with a 1-year history of hypereosinophilia. 18F-FDG PET/CT revealed endocardial uptake consistent with MRI gadolinium enhancement, suggesting left ventricular wall infla

Eosinophilic myocarditis (EM), irrespective of its unique etiology, is marked by varying extents of eosinophil infiltration, frequently accompanied by peripheral eosinophilia. In some instances, the etiology remains undetermined, thus classified as idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome. The clinical manifestations are highly variable, ranging from mild or asymptomatic presentations to acute fulminant myocarditis or chronic restrictive cardiomyopathy. We report a case of idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome, characterized by eosinophilic myocarditis, alongside axonal and dermatological involve

Hypereosinophilic syndrome is characterized by an overproduction of eosinophils that infiltrate and damage multiple organs. Cardiac dysfunction occurs frequently and is a main cause of morbidity and mortality. We describe the case of a middle-aged man diagnosed with a myeloproliferative neoplasm associated with hypereosinophilia and treated with imatinib. He was diagnosed with cardiac involvement by hypereosinophilic syndrome at a late stage, with an established restrictive cardiomyopathy. Because of end-stage heart failure, he successfully received a heart transplant. This disease might not b

Himalayan P-waves (amplitude > 5 mm) are often known to be classically associated with congenital heart diseases with right to left shunt like tricuspid atresia, Ebstein anomaly, combined tricuspid and pulmonic stenosis, ischemic heart disease, restrictive cardiomyopathy, etc., where they indicate a dilated right atrium and tend to be persistent. This type of P-waves is rarely seen in long-standing bronchiectasis and is usually transient. It can be easily confused with congenital heart disease. Here we report a case of Himalayan P-waves in patient with bronchiectatic lung disease which is a ra

Endomyocardial fibrosis (EMF) is a form of restrictive cardiomyopathy common in the tropics and subtropics. The aetiology of EMF is unknown but helminth infestations such as schistosomiasis have been implicated. Two boys aged 8 and 10 years with EMF associated with Schistosoma haematobium, are described. The schistosomes in both cases may have been acquired from contact with contaminated water collected and stored in containers and subsequently used for bathing. Both patients were managed conservatively. Overall prognosis of EMF is poor and this report emphasizes the importance of public healt
