Circulating fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) levels are associated with metabolic disturbances and fat distribution but not cardiovascular risk in HIV-infected patients.

OBJECTIVES: Dyslipidaemia, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and HIV/HAART-associated lipodystrophy syndrome (HALS) are common comorbidities in HIV-1-infected patients, which may increase cardiovascular risk. Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a bone-derived hormone with effects on metabolism and phosphate homeostasis. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between FGF23 levels, metabolic alterations, fat distribution and cardiovascular risk. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Serum FGF23 levels were analysed in 152 patients and 34 healthy control individuals

Metabolic disorders and cardiovascular risk in treatment-naive HIV-infected patients of sub-saharan origin starting antiretrovirals: impact of westernized lifestyle.

In a cohort of HIV-infected patients of sub-Saharan origin we describe the incidence of metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and lipodystrophy after 3 years of combined antiretroviral therapy, and model the 10-year risk of cardiovascular diseases, while taking into account environmental factors. This is a multinational, prospective cohort study conducted in HIV outpatient clinics from four tertiary care centers set in France and Côte d'Ivoire. The participants were HIV-infected, treatment-naive patients eligible to start antiretroviral treatment and were of sub-Saharan African origin. The m

Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with elevated insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk, particularly in otherwise low-risk individuals: the Tongren health care study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has been increasingly linked to extragastric conditions. However, the relationship between H. pylori infection and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remains controversial. This study aims to investigate the association between H. pylori infection and 10-year cardiovascular risk. METHODS: A total of 1,398 subjects who underwent health examinations at Beijing Tongren Hospital were included in this study. H. pylori infection was determined using 13C-breath test. The 10-year cardiovascular risk was assessed using the Framingham score. Insulin

The Prevalence of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors on Diabetic Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Individuals on Antiretroviral Treatment: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocol.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: People with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWHIV) have a higher prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as obesity, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Previous studies have depicted that PLWHIV have these NCDs due to the predisposing risk factors of CVDs including dyslipidaemia, impaired fasting glucose, hypertension, obesity, and elevated glycated hemoglobin. Understanding the cumulative consequences of these disorders is critical in this population. Hence, the aim of this protocol is to narrate the methods and techniques that will be used t

Role of latent tuberculosis infection on elevated risk of cardiovascular disease: a population-based cohort study of immigrants in British Columbia, Canada, 1985-2019.

We investigated cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk associated with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) (Aim-1) and LTBI therapy (Aim-2) in British Columbia, a low-tuberculosis-incidence setting. 49,197 participants had valid LTBI test results. Cox proportional hazards model was fitted, adjusting for potential confounders. Compared with the participants who tested LTBI negative, LTBI positive was associated with an 8% higher CVD risk in complete case data (adjusted hazard ratio (HR): 1.08, 95% CI: 0.99-1.18), a statistically significant 11% higher risk when missing confounder values were impute

Outcomes of temporary pacing using active fixation leads and externalized permanent pacemakers in patients with cardiovascular implantable electronic device infection and pacemaker dependency.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infections is increasing. Complete device and lead removal are recommended for all patients with definite CIED system infection. In patients with pacemaker dependency, temporary pacing before reimplantation is necessary. In this study, temporary pacing using active fixation leads (TPAFL) was evaluated. METHODS: We reviewed data from consecutive patients implanted with TPAFL after transvenous lead extraction at our center between November 2014 and October 2020. RESULTS: TPAFL were placed in 334 patients. The mean age

Baseline 10-Year Cardiovascular Risk Scores Predict Cognitive Function in Older Persons, and Particularly Women, Living With Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and associated comorbidities increase the risk of cognitive impairment in persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH). Given the potential composite effect of multiple cardiovascular risk factors on cognition, we examined the ability of the Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) risk score and the Framingham Heart Study Global CVD risk score (FRS) to predict future cognitive function in older PLWH. METHODS: We constructed linear regression models evaluating the association between baseline 10-year cardiovascular risk scores and cogn

Does infection with human immunodeficiency virus have any impact on the cardiovascular outcomes following percutaneous coronary intervention?: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A direct link between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients and the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) has been shown in recent scientific research. However, this issue is controversial since other previous reports showed no apparent impact of HIV or its anti-retroviral drugs on the cardiovascular system. We aimed to systematically compare the postinterventional adverse cardiovascular outcomes which were observed in patients with and without HIV infection during a mean follow up period ranging from 1 year to 3 years. METHODS: Common electronic databases were sear

A new diagnostic prediction model for infective endocarditis based on the 2023 duke-international society for cardiovascular infectious disease criteria: a multicenter observational study.

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) remains a diagnostically challenging disease with diverse symptoms. Whether IE is suspected frequently depends on clinical judgement. A reliable model to estimate the likelihood of IE at presentation across clinical departments is needed; however, no such model is currently available. We aimed to develop such a diagnostic prediction model using objective and reproducible variables and to validate its performance. METHODS: We included inpatients aged ≥ 20 years who had either a diagnosis code for IE or for undiagnosed fever during hospitalization. The mod

Association of Acute-Phase IL-6 and SAA with Cardiovascular Events and Mortality Six Years After COVID-19 Infection: An Observational Cohort Study.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been associated with an increased long-term cardiovascular risk, potentially mediated by magnitude of the acute inflammatory response inflammation. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and serum amyloid A (SAA) are key components of the inflammatory cascade and may serve as biomarkers of post-COVID cardiovascular vulnerability. This longitudinal observational study investigated the association between post- COVID-19 infection IL-6 and SAA levels and major cardiovascular events over a six-year follow-up period. A total of 97 individuals with documented prior SARS-CoV-2 i

The Triglyceride-Glucose (TyG) Index and Incident Diabetes and Cardiovascular Events in People Living With HIV-1 Infection. A 14-Year Observational Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PWH) are at increased risk for metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. However, there is no structured prevention strategy for these subjects. The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has shown predictive value for Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular events (CVEs) in the general population, but its utility in PWH remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study including 477 PWH without baseline T2DM. TyG index was calculated as follows: ln[fasting triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL)]/2. ROC analysis was used to identify th

Zika Virus Infection of Sertoli Cells Alters Protein Expression Involved in Activated Immune and Antiviral Response Pathways, Carbohydrate Metabolism and Cardiovascular Disease.

Zika virus (ZIKV), a re-emerging virus, causes congenital brain abnormalities and Guillain-Barré syndrome. It is mainly transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, but infections are also linked to sexual transmissions. Infectious ZIKV has been isolated, and viral RNA has been detected in semen over a year after the onset of initial symptoms, but the mode of long-term persistence is not yet understood. ZIKV can proliferate in human Sertoli cells (HSerC) for several weeks in vitro, suggesting that it might be a reservoir for persistent ZIKV infection. This study determined proteomic changes in HSerC durin

Cardiovascular Active Peptides of Marine Origin with ACE Inhibitory Activities: Potential Role as Anti-Hypertensive Drugs and in Prevention of SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

Growing interest in hypertension-one of the main factors characterizing the cardiometabolic syndrome (CMS)-and anti-hypertensive drugs raised from the emergence of a new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, responsible for the COVID19 pandemic. The virus SARS-CoV-2 employs the Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), a component of the RAAS (Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System) system, as a receptor for entry into the cells. Several classes of synthetic drugs are available for hypertension, rarely associated with severe or mild adverse effects. New natural compounds, such as peptides, might be useful to t
