The intestinal barrier serves as the first line of defense against enteric pathogens in fish. However, the neuroimmune regulatory mechanisms that govern its integrity, particularly those involving evolutionarily conserved neuropeptides, are largely unexplored in teleosts. Neuropeptide FF (NPFF), a member of the FMRFamide family, is known to modulate immune functions in mammals, yet its role in fish mucosal immunity remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the role of NPFF in the intestinal immunity of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). The NPFF gene encoded a 151-amino acid

Pymetrozine (a pyridine azomethine pesticide) is one of the most commonly and frequently used insecticides. Scanty information is available about the deleterious effects of Pymetrozine on fish especially bighead carp. Hence, the current study investigated chronic toxicological effects of pymetrozine in bighead carp. A total of 80 fish were reared and divided into four groups(A-D) each containing 20 fish. Pymetrozine was given to experimental fish of groups B, C, and D mixed in water at doses of 5, 10, and 15 mg/L respectively for 30 days. Group A remained as control group. On days 10, 20, and

Triploid fish are considered a promising candidate for aquaculture; however, their immunological properties remain incompletely characterized. In this study, we investigated the immunological differences between 10-month-old triploid and diploid grass carp. Triploids exhibited a higher head kidney index and obvious macrophage aggregation in the head kidney compared to diploids. Among the immune and antioxidant indices, serum IgM content, head kidney lysozyme and acid phosphatase activities, and catalase and total superoxide dismutase activities, were significantly elevated in the triploids. Chlorpromazine (CPZ) is an abused sedative that is extensively metabolized in organisms. However, the metabolic pathway of CPZ in aquatic organisms is still unclear. In this study, CPZ metabolites was analyzed in grass carp exposed to CPZ in the raising water using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap MS). Thirteen CPZ metabolites were identified, including 11 previously reported and 2 newly identified metabolites (M9 and M13), and 5 known metabolites were confirmed using authentic standards. The molecular structures a

While T cells are well established as key players in mammalian adaptive immunity, their functional roles in teleosts remain poorly understood. Here, a monoclonal antibody against grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) CD3ε was generated, and characterized by Western blotting, flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence. In healthy fish, CD3ε+ T cells accounted for 5.1 %, 4.0 %, and 2.6 % of splenic, head kidney, and peripheral blood lymphocytes, respectively. Upon Aeromonas hydrophila infection, CD3ε+ T cell populations elevated significantly in immune tissues such as spleen, head kidney, and posteri

Among freshwater fishes, the Indian Carp (Labeo rohita, "ROHU") is one of the most chosen species for Indian diets, but reports of toxicity are rare. This report is of a middle-aged healthy female who developed pain in the abdomen, vomiting, and diarrhea within hours of ingestion of a cooked portion of Indian carp's intestines and gallbladder. There was an inadvertent delay in diagnosis over 1 week due to the rarity of incidence and non-availability of a definite diagnostic indicator coupled with the lack of awareness and high index of suspicion. However, the patient could finally be diagnosed

Plastics are ubiquitous in modern society due to their cost-effectiveness, lightweight nature, and versatility. However, their extensive use and inadequate recycling have led to a significant environmental challenge, with plastic waste accumulating rapidly and causing ecological and health problems, especially in aquatic environments. Nanoplastics, particles ranging from 1 to 100 nm, have emerged as a particularly concerning subset due to their ability to easily penetrate biological barriers and accumulate in tissues. In this study, we investigated the toxicity of carboxylate-modified polystyr

Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2), a common biological macromolecule, is pivotal for innate immunity and pathogen recognition. In this study, we identified and characterized a CcPTGS2a-like gene in the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) with an open reading frame (ORF) of 1821 bp and epidermal growth factor and peroxidase domains. Our multiple sequence analysis revealed high homology between the amino acid sequence of CcPTGS2a-like and those of its homologs in other fish. CcPTGS2a-like mRNA and protein expressions were significantly upregulated in the spleen, head kidney, liver, and gil

As an important antibiotic, avermectin (AVM) has been widely used in China, but its unreasonable application has caused serious harm to the water environment. In view of the various pharmacological effects of quercetin (QUE), such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, the scientific hypothesis that "QUE may cause carp poisoning by inhibiting AVM" was proposed in this study. However, its protective effect in AVM -induced heart damage has not been reported. QUE reduced the symptoms of AVM toxicity and decreased the levels of creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and creatine kinase in the seru

The anaesthetic effect of vanillin on crucian carp was investigated using different concentrations of vanillin, with a nonvanillin control. The effective concentration range of vanillin anaesthesia was determined from the behavioural characteristics of crucian carp during the anaesthesia onset and recovery phases. Physiological and biochemical indices, and the electronic nose response to the fish muscle, were measured over the range of effectiveanaestheticc concentrations. An increased concentration of vanillin shortened the time taken to achieve deep anaesthesia but increased the recovery tim

As an adipokine, coiled-coil domain-containing 3 (CCDC3) plays multiple physiological roles in fatty liver, lipid metabolism, and abdominal obesity. Grass carp was selected as the experimental animal in this study to investigate the roles of Ccdc3 in teleosts. Results showed that the open reading frame (ORF) of cloned ccdc3 was 831 bp and encoded 276 amino acids. Three N-glycosylation sites and a predicted coiled-coil domain motif were located in the identified Ccdc3. Moreover, a nuclear localization signal (NLS) was contained in the coiled-coil domain motif of the identified Ccdc3. The result

The hepatotoxicities of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been extensively investigated, while little is known about the sex-specific differences. In this study, common carp were exposed to the emerging perfluoroalkyl phosphinic acids (6:6 and 8:8 PFPiAs) for 14 days to disclose sex-specific hepatotoxicity. Apparent hepatotoxicity, including cell necrosis, apoptosis, and steatosis, was observed in both male and female carp liver. The observed hepatocyte steatosis was predominantly attributed to the dysregulation of hepatic lipid metabolism but was based on sex-specific

Intravascular hemolysis is a fundamental feature of hemorrhagic venereal infection or tissue and releases the endogenous damage-associated molecular pattern hemoglobin (Hb) into the plasma or tissues, which results in systemic inflammation, vasomotor dysfunction, thrombophilia, and proliferative vasculopathy. However, how the cytotoxic Hb affects the tissues of grass carp remains unclear. Here, we established a hemolysis model in grass carp by injecting phenylhydrazine (PHZ). The data revealed that the PHZ-induced hemolysis increased the content of Hb and activated the antioxidant system in pl

Ichthyophthirius multifiliis is a protozoan ciliate that causes white spot disease (also known as ichthyophthiriasis) in freshwater fish. Holland's spinibarbel (Spinibarbus hollandi) was less susceptible to white spot disease than grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon Idella). In this study, grass carp and Holland's spinibarbel are infected by I. multifiliis and the amount of infection is 10,000 theronts per fish. All grass carp died within 12 days after infection, and the survival rate of Holland's spinibarbel was more than 80%. In order to study the difference in sensitivity of these two fish species

Juvenile common carp were treated with Cd2+ at a sublethal concentration for Cyprinidae (6.4 mg/L). The expression of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunit genes (NR2A, NR2B) and ATP-binding cassette subfamily C member 1 gene (ABCC1) was compared between treated and untreated fish. In addition, cadmium accumulation in the fish tissues was assessed. NR2A was 18.9-fold upregulated by Cd2+ in the eyes (choroid + retina), which accumulated Cd, and was not upregulated in brain, which didn't accumulate Cd. This may have been caused by the blocking of calcium channels by Cd2+, which has a very simila
