Before treatment, causes of infertility need to be detected and severe failures in housing, feeding or other diseases must be eliminated. Feces were collected from 68 dairy cattle, 1 to 12 mo of age, on 12 farms in the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and examined for the presence of Cryptosporidium sp. All samples were subjected to molecular analysis by polymerase chain reaction (nested PCR) of the 18S rRNA. Four positive samples (4.54%) were sequenced and identified as Cryptosporidium andersoni. This species represents a risk for Brazilian cattle because infection can affect cattle productivity. Moreover, C. andersoni is considered a zoonotic species.

Many practitioners perform this surgery using the same approach each time due to their comfort with one specific approach or lack of familiarity of other available options. The incidence of cysticercosis due to Taenia saginata in both local and exotic breeds of cattle slaughtered for meat in southeastern Nigeria between November 1999 and April 2002 is reported. The examination of various organs of 25,800 cattle in 10 major abattoirs of this region showed that 6750 (26.2%) were infected with Cysticercus (C.) bovis. Hemochromatosis is an inherited defect in Salers cattle, characterized by increased iron absorption and wasting in young animals. Loss of teeth and soft bones has been reported. This study details bone changes in a prospective study of an affected Salers heifer and an age-matched, half-sibling control. The heifer fell 2 weeks before euthanasia, developed non-weight bearing lameness, and then became recumbent. A study was performed at an abattoir in Australia, in an attempt to correlate focal chronic interstitial nephritis (FCIN) producing the so-called "white spotted kidney", with Leptospira spp. and other pathogens in cattle.
