Fossil Asiatic Brush-Tailed Porcupine Atherurus macrourus (Hystricidae, Rodentia) from Northern Vietnam (Bud Cave, Pleistocene-Holocene Transition).

The lower jaw and dental remains of the brush-tailed porcupine are described from the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary deposits of the Bud cave in northern Vietnam. In terms of the average length of the cheek teeth, this porcupine is somewhat larger than the modern Atherurus macrourus (Linnaeus, 1758), but slightly smaller than the Pleistocene A. karnuliensis Lydekker, 1886; relatively small incisors make it possible to assign the form from the Bud сave to A. macrourus. The finding is the first fossil record of this species in Vietnam.

Size and placement of developing anterior teeth in immature Neanderthal mandibles from Dederiyeh Cave, Syria: implications for emergence of the modern human chin.

Evolutionary and functional significance of the human chin has long been explored from various perspectives including masticatory biomechanics, speech, and anterior tooth size. Recent ontogenetic studies have indicated that the spatial position of internally forming anterior teeth partially constrains adult mandibular symphyseal morphology. The present study therefore preliminarily examined the size and placement of developing anterior teeth in immature Neanderthal mandibles of Dederiyeh 1 and 2, compared with similarly-aged modern humans (N = 16) and chimpanzees (N = 7) whose incisors are com

Supernumerary fourth molar and dental pathologies in a Chalcolithic individual from the El Mirador Cave site (Sierra de Atapuerca, Burgos, Spain).

We present a middle-aged Chalcolithic male with a supernumerary distomolar in the mandible. The prevalence of supernumerary teeth in present-day populations is low, ranging from 0.1% to 3.4%; most supernumerary teeth are documented in the anterior and molar regions of the maxilla in present populations. However, the prevalence of supernumerary molars in past populations is still unknown. Moreover, a complete pathological study has been done of this individual. Maxilla, mandible and teeth have been analyzed searching for dental pathologies. A cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis of man

Early Pleistocene human mandible from Sima del Elefante (TE) cave site in Sierra de Atapuerca (Spain): a palaeopathological study.

Here we present a detailed palaeopathological study of the hominin mandible ATE9-1 found at the Sima del Elefante site (TE), Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain. This fossil represents the earliest hominin remains from Western Europe with an age of ca. 1.3 Ma. The specimen displays several dento-gnathic lesions; the antiquity and geographic location of this fossil justifies a detailed palaeopathological study to determine if the pathologies have significantly altered taxonomically relevant features. Our study reveals severe dental attrition combined with generalized hypercementosis, alveolar root expos

Extending the chronology of deposits at Blombos Cave, South Africa, back to 140 ka using optical dating of single and multiple grains of quartz.

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) measurements are reported for both single aliquots (of two different sizes) and single grains of quartz from deposits within Blombos Cave. Ages have been obtained for six sediments from the Middle Stone Age (MSA) occupation levels and for two sterile sands, one underlying the archaeological sediment and one overlying the Later Stone Age occupation levels. The ages for the archaeological sediments were obtained from single-grain measurements that enabled unrepresentative grains to be rejected. The MSA occupation levels have ages that, within error limits,

Comparative ultrastructural investigations of the pineal organ of the blind cave fish, Anoptichthys jordani, and its ancestor, the eyed river fish, Astyanax mexicanus.

A comparative ultrastructural study has been made of the pineal organ in specimens of two closely related populations of the characid fish, Astyanaz mexicanus. The specimens of one population are living in the river, under natural light conditions. The specimens of the other population, originally described as Anoptichthys jordani, are living in a completely dark cave. In specimens of both populations the pineal organ consists of a spindle shaped end-vesicle, connected to the diencephalic roof by a slender stalk. The pineal tissue is compact and consists predominantly of glia-like supporting c

First Primate Clavicles From Swartkrans Cave: Further Indications of Habitual Arboreal Behavior in Some Early Pleistocene South African Hominins.

OBJECTIVES: We provide descriptions and taphonomic and functional interpretations of two hominin clavicles, SWT1/HR-5 and SWT1/HR-6, from Swartkrans Member 1. We explore the possibility that one of the clavicles derives from the same Paranthropus robustus individual as SWT1/HR-2, an articulating os coxae and partial lower limb from Swartkrans Member 1. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We employed taphonomic methods to describe damage on SWT1/HR-5 and SWT1/HR-6. Complementing the qualitative descriptions, we used osteometric tools and micro-CT scanning to generate quantitative data on external shape, cr

Sediments Microfungi Diversity in the Demänovská Ice Cave: A Combined Morpho-Molecular Approach with Edaphic N, P, K, C and pH Factors.

Subterranean environments represent extreme oligotrophic ecosystems where microclimatic and edaphic factors restrict microbial life. This study evaluated culturable fungal communities in the soil and sediment samples of the Demänovská Ice Cave to determine their spatial diversity and abundance across psychrophilic (5 °C) and mesophilic (24 °C) incubation temperatures in relation to soil and sediment chemistry. Using a combined morpho-molecular approach, 19 distinct fungal species were identified, with a strong taxonomic dominance of Ascomycota and the genus Penicillium. Culturing temperatures

Analysis of multi-trait evolution across independently evolved cavefish populations reveals shared and independent evolution of suites of cave-associated traits.

Environmental perturbations often lead to the evolution of multiple traits. Determining whether shared genetic factors underlie multi-trait evolution is a central question in evolutionary biology. In the Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, cave-dwelling populations have repeatedly evolved multiple traits. The repeated evolution of these traits, paired the robust environmental differences between the surface and cave habitats, provide an opportunity to investigate the genetic basis of multi-trait evolution. Here, we investigate the extent to which shared genetic mechanisms underlie the repeated

Cave-Associated Histoplasmosis Outbreak Among Travelers Returning from Costa Rica - Georgia, Texas, and Washington, December 2024-January 2025.

Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection that primarily affects the lungs. The condition is caused by Histoplasma organisms, which are often found in soil contaminated with bird or bat droppings. On January 17, 2025, a Georgia infectious disease physician notified CDC of suspected histoplasmosis cases among 12 members of an extended family from households in Georgia, Texas, and Washington. The ill family members included six adults aged 42-49 years and six children aged 8-16 years. They had recently returned from Costa Rica, where they toured a cave linked to a previous histoplasmosis outbreak (1)

Seasonal dynamics of Phlebotomus neglectus (Diptera: Psychodidae) in cave microhabitats in Romania and the rediscovery of Sergentomyia minuta (Rondani, 1843) after 50 years.

BACKGROUND: In a countrywide study aiming to update the knowledge on diversity of sand fly species in Romania, a sand fly population was observed in an isolated system of cave microhabitats. The caves are located in the protected area of Canaraua Fetii, Dobrogea region, southeastern Romania. The highest sand fly diversity was recorded in this area between 1968 and 1970. This work presents a study conducted to estimate the seasonal variation of the sand fly species in correlation with the particular environmental factors of the isolated system of cave microhabitats. METHODS: Sand flies were co…

Caridina sinanensis, a new species of stygobiotic atyid shrimp (Decapoda, Caridea, Atyidae) from a karst cave in the Guizhou Province, southwestern China.

From a biodiversity survey of a subterranean habitat near Sinan County, Guizhou Province, southwestern China, a new atyid shrimp of the genus Caridina H. Milne Edwards, 1837, C. sinanensis sp. nov. was discovered. The new species can be separated from other congeners based on a combination of characters including depigmentation in body and reduction of eyes, small pigment spot at the centre of the cornea, the shape of rostrum and the endopod of the 1st male pleopod, and the relatively longer appendix interna on the appendix masculina of the 2nd pleopod. Mitochondrial COI and 16S rRNA gene sequ

Strategy and Technique of Endonasal Endoscopic Bony Decompression and Selective Tumor Removal in Symptomatic Skull Base Meningiomas of the Cavernous Sinus and Meckel's Cave.

BACKGROUND: Parasellar meningiomas involving the cavernous sinus and Meckel's cave pose a management challenge because of invasion around neurovascular structures and the pituitary gland. The management options range from aggressive resection to focused radiotherapy alone. We present a strategy for these tumors that includes endonasal bony decompression, partial tumor removal, and stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) in select cases. METHODS: The tumor location, previous treatments, cranial neuropathies, pituitary dysfunction, tumor control rates, use of stereotactic radiosurgery, SRT, and complic

Extended middle fossa approach with anterior petrosectomy for resection of upper petroclival meningioma involving Meckel's cave: operative video and technical nuances.

The surgical management of petroclival meningiomas remains a formidable challenge. These tumors are deep in the base of the skull and arise medial to the fifth cranial nerve. In this operative video, the author demonstrates the extended middle fossa approach with anterior petrosectomy to resect an upper petroclival meningioma extending into Meckel's cave with brainstem compression. This approach is very useful for accessing deep tumors located above and below the tentorium, and between the fifth and seventh cranial nerves. Access to Meckel's cave is readily achieved by opening the fibrous ring

Limnodrilus sulphurensis n. sp., from a sulfur cave in Colorado, USA, with notes on the morphologically similar L. profundicola (Clitellata, Naididae, Tubificinae).

A new species of the tubificine genus Limnodrilus is described and COI barcoded from Sulphur Cave and associated springs in Colorado, USA. The habitats are characterized by high sulfide concentrations. The new species, L. sulphurensis, is distinguished from all congeners by the elongate, nearly parallel teeth of chaetae in its anterior segments. It has a penis sheath resembling that of L. profundicola; consequently, museum specimens and new collections are examined here to resolve some of the taxonomic confusion surrounding that widespread, but uncommon species.

Bat flies (Diptera: Nycteribiidae and Streblidae) infesting cave-dwelling bats in Gabon: diversity, dynamics and potential role in Polychromophilus melanipherus transmission.

BACKGROUND: Evidence of haemosporidian infections in bats and bat flies has motivated a growing interest in characterizing their transmission cycles. In Gabon (Central Africa), many caves house massive colonies of bats that are known hosts of Polychromophilus Dionisi parasites, presumably transmitted by blood-sucking bat flies. However, the role of bat flies in bat malaria transmission remains under-documented. METHODS: An entomological survey was carried out in four caves in Gabon to investigate bat fly diversity, infestation rates and host preferences and to determine their role in Polychro…

Hunting, swimming, and worshiping: human cultural practices illuminate the blood meal sources of cave dwelling Chagas vectors (Triatoma dimidiata) in Guatemala and Belize.

BACKGROUND: Triatoma dimidiata, currently the major Central American vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease, inhabits caves throughout the region. This research investigates the possibility that cave dwelling T. dimidiata might transmit the parasite to humans and links the blood meal sources of cave vectors to cultural practices that differ among locations. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We determined the blood meal sources of twenty-four T. dimidiata collected from two locations in Guatemala and one in Belize where human interactions with the caves differ. The flow fields involved in hydrodynamic imaging by blind Mexican cave fish (Astyanax fasciatus). Part I: open water and heading towards a wall.

Blind Mexican cave fish (Astyanax fasciatus) sense the presence of nearby objects by sensing changes in the water flow around their body. The information available to the fish using this hydrodynamic imaging ability depends on the properties of the flow field it generates while gliding and how this flow field is altered by the presence of objects. Here, we used particle image velocimetry to measure the flow fields around gliding blind cave fish as they moved through open water and when heading towards a wall. These measurements, combined with computational fluid dynamics models, were used to e
