Immunoglobulin G4-related disease of the orbit: imaging features in 27 patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Immunoglobulin G4-related disease is a systemic fibroinflammatory process of unknown etiology, characterized by tissue infiltration by immunoglobulin G4 plasma cells. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively identify the spectrum of imaging features seen in immunoglobulin G4-related disease of the orbit. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 27 patients with biopsy-proved immunoglobulin G4-related disease of the orbit and either a CT or MR imaging of the orbits. These CT or MR imaging examinations were evaluated for the following: extraocular muscle size,

[Effects of upper incisor separation on the submandibular and sublingual glands of young rats].

The effects of upper incisor separation, chronic isoproterenol (IPR) treatment and a combination with both treatments on the submandibular and sublingual glands of rats were examined and compared biochemically, immunohistochemically and radioimmunologically during 7 days after treatment. The findings obtained were as follows: 1. Both submandibular and sublingual glands of rats were significantly enlarged by an orthodontic appliance and chronic IPR treatment, and in combination with both treatments they were much more markedly enlarged additively during 7 days of treatment. This enlargement was

Carotid body in the sudden infant death syndrome.

Sixty-three percent of victims of the sudden infant death syndrome had a subnormal volume and 23 percent an enlarged volume of glomic cells in their carotid bodies. Evidences of antecedent chronic alveolar hypoxia and hypoxemia were found in both groups but were more severe in the victims with enlarged glomic tissue.

Quantitative analysis of the chromatin proteome in disease reveals remodeling principles and identifies high mobility group protein B2 as a regulator of hypertrophic growth.

A fundamental question in biology is how genome-wide changes in gene expression are enacted in response to a finite stimulus. Recent studies have mapped changes in nucleosome localization, determined the binding preferences for individual transcription factors, and shown that the genome adopts a nonrandom structure in vivo. What remains unclear is how global changes in the proteins bound to DNA alter chromatin structure and gene expression. We have addressed this question in the mouse heart, a system in which global gene expression and massive phenotypic changes occur without cardiac cell divi

Acute splenic sequestration together with aplastic crisis caused by human parvovirus B19 in patients with sickle cell disease.

Three children with homozygous sickle cell disease, 22 months and 8 and 10 years of age, had clinical and hematologic manifestations of aplastic and splenic sequestration crisis simultaneously. They had an acute drop in hemoglobin level (16, 20, and 45 gm/L), reticulocytopenia (0.1%, 0.6%, and 0.3%), and sudden splenic enlargement. Evidence of recent parvovirus infection was demonstrated.

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of metastatic eccrine porocarcinoma.

Eccrine porocarcinoma (EP), although rare, is widely recognized as the most common malignant sweat gland tumor. EP typically grows slowly and usually is cured by surgical excision with clear margins. An elevated mortality rate, however, is observed when regional lymph nodes are involved. We herein describe cytohistologic findings in a case of metastatic EP. An 86-year-old man with a history of EP of the left lateral ankle and squamous cell carcinoma in situ (Bowen's disease) of the penis presented with enlarged left inguinal lymph nodes. A superficial fine-needle aspiration (FNA) was performed

Sarcoidosis Stage II: a Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease of unknown origin characterized by non-caseous necrotizing epithelial cell granuloma that affects the lung and lymphatic system. Sarcoidosis mainly occurs in young and middle-aged people, usually manifested as bilateral hilar lymph node enlargement, lung infiltration, and eye and skin lesions. Sarcoidosis has a high natural remission rate, but patients with progressive imaging or pulmonary function accompanied by significant clinical symptoms or extrapulmonary lesions need to be treated. METHODS: The sarcoidosis patient had received

Tetralogy of Fallot with severe ascending aortic enlargement in early childhood.

The Rastelli procedure is indicated for repair of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) with pulmonary atresia. However, currently, there are no criteria available for concomitant surgical intervention for an enlarged ascending aorta in infancy. We report a rare case of TOF with pulmonary atresia complicated by severe enlargement of the ascending aorta in a girl aged 2 years and 5 months. We performed the Rastelli procedure with ascending aorta replacement. Pathological findings of the ascending aorta included fragmentation of elastic fibers and loss of smooth muscle cells. Postoperatively, the patient re

Molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying magnesium-deficiency-induced enlargement, cracking and lignification of Citrus sinensis leaf veins.

Little is known about the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying magnesium (Mg)-deficiency-induced enlargement, cracking and lignification of midribs and main lateral veins of Citrus leaves. Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck seedlings were irrigated with nutrient solution at a concentration of 0 (Mg-deficiency) or 2 (Mg-sufficiency) mM Mg(NO3)2 for 16 weeks. Enlargement, cracking and lignification of veins occurred only in lower leaves, but not in upper leaves. Total soluble sugars (glucose + fructose + sucrose), starch and cellulose concentrations were less in Mg-deficiency veins of lowe

A large swelling of the tongue.

Hyalinising clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is an infrequent distinct histological subtype of clear cell adenocarcinoma encountered in minor salivary glands which can be confused with a variety of clear cell-rich tumours. The entity of HCCC should be considered in patients presenting with well-circumscribed longstanding nodular enlargement without any other significant abnormality. HCCC is often difficult to diagnose due to its unusual presentation. This report presents a male patient who reported with a complaint of 2 month history of a large swelling on the tongue. The clinical, radiological, hi

Distribution of mast cells in the axillary lymph nodes of breast cancer patients.

Fifty mastectomy specimens of carcinoma breast were studied for pattern of mast cell distribution in their axillary lymph nodes. When all axillary nodes were free of tumour, the mean mast cell count was 35.75/sq mm. In the metastatic node the mast cell count was inversely proportional to the amount of metastatic tumour. The mast cell number decreased (25.64/sq mm) as the metastasis developed in any of the enlarged axillary nodes. Their count diminished further (23.55/sq mm) as the amount of metastatic tumour increased in individual nodes and when tumour involved all enlarged nodes. Mean mast c

TGF-beta and mesenchymal hepatic involvement after visceral leishmaniasis.

The liver involvement in the human visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has been related to parasitism and activated Kupffer cells with further occasional fibrotic alterations, especially after long-term disease without treatment. However, fibrotic alterations have been reported after therapy, whose clinical finding is the persistence of hepatomegaly. Fibrotic involvement of the liver after therapy was never well understood, and the aim of this study was to evaluate this finding through ultrastructural and morphometric analysis. A case-control study was performed with 20 patients (15 cases and five con

Inflammation is preceded by tumor necrosis factor-dependent infiltration of mesenchymal cells in experimental arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the involvement of mesenchymal progenitor cells in the induction of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). METHODS: DBA/1 mice were immunized with type II collagen in adjuvant or adjuvant alone, and the presence of mesenchymal cells in the joints of prearthritic mice was studied by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: An analysis of the joints on day 10 postimmunization (at least 10 days before the onset of arthritis) revealed synovial hyperplasia without leukocytic infiltration. Large, round cells expressing bone morphogenetic protein receptors (BMPRs), which serve as markers f

Rosai-Dorfman disease with thyroid involvement: a case report and literature review.

Rosai-Dorfman disease is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis that usually presents with lymph node enlargement but may involve extranodal sites. Thyroid involvement is exceedingly uncommon and often leads to diagnostic difficulties. We report the case of a 46-year-old woman with a progressively enlarging, painless cervical mass accompanied by mild fever, malaise, and difficulty swallowing. Physical examination revealed cervical lymph node enlargement and a thyroid nodule. Fine needle aspiration specimens from the thyroid gland and lymph nodes showed numerous pale histiocytes with emperipo

Role of Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Tonsillar Hypertrophy: An Unexplored Enigma.

UNLABELLED: Tonsillar or adenoid hypertrophy is a common childhood finding which can cause significant health problems like respiratory infections and sleep apnea. Though normal growth of children is also attributed to such enlargement, infection, environmental pollutants, allergens, and gastroesophageal reflux are proposed triggering factors for tonsillar hypertrophy. While tonsilar enlargement in adults is more associated with malignancy and chronic infections like the human immunodeficiency virus, the immunology of childhood adenotonsillar hypertrophy is less understood. We postulate that u

Cherubism with idiopathic gingival enlargement: A rare case report.

Cherubism is a congenital childhood disease of autosomal dominant inheritance. It is a benign, familial giant cell lesion characterized by gradually progressive painless swelling of the jaws. Idiopathic gingival enlargement is a rare condition and may be associated with some uncommon syndromes. This case report describes an 11-year-old patient with unusual clinical form of gingival enlargement, cherubic facial appearance. Clinical examination revealed the presence of the hyperplastic gingiva, which completely covered all teeth. The bilateral swelling of mandible and the appearance of the scler

Isolated cervical lymph node sarcoidosis presenting in an asymptomatic neck mass: a case report.

Sarcoidosis, a systemic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology. The presentation of sarcoidal granuloma in neck nodes without typical manifestations of systemic sarcoidosis is difficult to diagnose. We describe the case of a 37-year-old woman with an increasing mass on the right side of neck. The excisional biopsy from the neck mass showed noncaseating epithelioid cell granuloma of the lymph nodes. No evidence of mycobacterial or fungal infection was noted. Thoracic evaluations did not show enlargement of mediastinal lymph nodes or parenchymal abnormalities. Immunohistochemistry showed abun

Primary hypothyroidism with hyperprolactinaemia and pituitary enlargement mimicking a pituitary macroadenoma.

Hyperprolactinaemia can occur in patients with hypothyroidism. A 32-year-old woman with primary hypothyroidism presented with amenorrhoea and galactorrhoea of two years' duration. She had hyperprolactinaemia, low basal morning cortisol levels and evidence of a pituitary macroadenoma on magnetic resonance imaging. Therapy with L-thyroxine resulted in induction of regular menses, resolution of galactorrhoea, normalisation of hormone levels and disappearance of the image of pituitary macroadenoma. It seems that enlargement of the pituitary due to thyrotroph and/or lactotroph cell hyperplasia seco

Thymic hyperplasia in adults following chemotherapy for malignancy.

BACKGROUND: The accuracy of the assessment of patients with malignant disease and of their response to chemotherapy has been significantly improved with the routine availability of computerized tomography (CT) scanning. CT abnormalities, however, may be non-specific, especially after chemotherapy. Rebound enlargement of the thymus gland after chemotherapy induced atrophy is one cause of an abnormal thoracic CT scan on re-staging. AIMS: This phenomenon has previously been reported mainly in relation to the treatment of lymphoma and germ cell cancers. This paper highlights the occurrence of thy
