Jefferson fracture of the atlas. Report of six cases.

Six cases of Jefferson fracture of the atlas are summarized. None had recognizable neurological signs that resulted from the injury when seen in the hospital. With conservative treatment, pain subsided and the fracture stabilized in a short period in all six patients. None of the patients underwent fusion of the cervical spine.

Atlas Fracture with Concomitant Vertebral Artery Hypoplasia, a Rare but Potentially Hazardous Combination: A Case Report.

The fractures of the first cervical spine vertebrae (atlas) represent 7% of all the overall cervical spine fractures. Hypoplasia of the vertebral artery is also rare (10% of the general population), but even rarer is the combination of those both conditions. This combination should always be identified and treated because sometimes it can be extremely dangerous for the patient. We present a case of a 24-year-old patient who suffered an atlas fracture with concomitant vertebral artery hypoplasia (VAH). We also present the diagnostic algorithm and the treatment management that we have followed.

Complex cervical spondylotic myelopathy: a report of two cases and literature review.

STUDY DESIGN: A report of two cases with complex cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) and review of the literature. OBJECTIVE: To describe two unique patients with complex CSM due to simultaneous anomalies as anteroposterior compressions of the spinal cord in both upper and lower cervical spine, caused by hypertrophic transverse ligament of atlas (TLA), dysplasia of the posterior arch of atlas, disc herniation, hypertrophic ligamentum flavum and osteophytes. METHODS: We present such two cases with clinical, imageological presentations, and describe the surgical procedure, to which both pati

Epidemiology of atlas fractures in the United States: A 20-year analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the atlas represent a large portion of cervical spine trauma in the geriatric population. With an aging and more active population, it is expected that the number of patients sustaining atlas fractures is increasing. However, epidemiologic data regarding the incidence of atlas fractures in large populations are scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence and demographic characteristics of patients with fractures of the atlas in the United States (US) over the last 20 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive epidemiology study retrospectively

Resection and 3D-printed prosthetic reconstruction of a giant aneurysmal bone cyst in the atlas: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are aggressive, destructive bone tumors. Treatment of ABCs occurring in the upper cervical spine remains challenging due to their proximity to critical nerves and blood vessels. OBSERVATIONS: The authors report the case of a patient with a giant ABC in the atlas. Imaging data showed that there were changes in the left bone of the atlas, spinal canal stenosis and instability at the craniovertebral junction, and the vertebral artery passed through the lesion. The combined far-lateral, transoral, and posterior midline approach was adopted to completely re

[Classification of injuries of the cervical spine].

Recent advances and the technical options that have lately become available in the surgical treatment of spinal injuries mean that clear definition of the indications is essential. Precise observation and classification of each injury to the cervical spine are of paramount importance for this purpose, to allow the comparison of proposed methods of treatment and of the results obtained with them. There are a number of classification systems for injuries to the cervical spine, none of which, however, is generally accepted. These classification systems are based on different criteria, such as nat

Craniospinal and cervicospinal malformations associated with maxillonasal dysostosis (Binder syndrome).

Craniospinal and cervicospinal malformations were found in 15 (53.5%) of 28 cases of maxillonasal dysostosis (Binder syndrome) in which a complete radiographic analysis could be done. These anomalies have not been reported previously. Analysis of the anomalies suggested a common induction factor, or, at least, a simultaneity in the development of the maxillonasal and vertebral dysplasias that characterize Binder syndrome. The following procedures are recommended: (1) examination of the cranial and cervical spine in all subjects with symptoms of Binder syndrome, and (2) regular examination of p

Robot- and navigation-assisted cervical fusion and decompression for complex vertebral artery anomalies in os odontoideum with Klippel-Feil syndrome: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Vertebral artery (VA) anomalies, particularly those associated with congenital atlantoaxial dislocations, are well documented in the literature. Typically, these anomalies are linked to persistent first intersegmental artery variants or occur in conjunction with occipitalization of the atlas. The case presented in this report is unique due to the presence of bilateral ectatic VAs with an anomalous course beneath the posterior arch of C1, in the absence of occipitalization of the atlas. This finding adds to the growing recognition of anatomical variability in patients with congenita

Anatomic considerations of C2 nerve root ganglion.

STUDY DESIGN: Dissection and observation of the dorsal root ganglion of the second cervical spinal nerve bilaterally. OBJECTIVES: To determine the position of the C2 dorsal root ganglion and the heights of the C2 ganglion and its corresponding foramen. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The dorsal root ganglion has been well studied in the middle and lower cervical spine and in the lumbar spine. In no previous study are the position and height of the C2 dorsal root ganglion and its corresponding foramen described. METHODS: Fifteen cadaveric cervical spines were exposed posteriorly. The C2 nerve ro

[Articular chondrocalcinosis revealed by acute cervical symptoms simulating meningitis (author's transl)].

Four cases of acute cervical pain with high fever and important stiffness of the cervical spine, leading to study the cerebrospinal fluid in emergency, are reported. All cases had elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Recovery was obtained in all cases in a few days without treatment. The cerebrospinal fluid was normal in the three cases studied. In three patients the roentgenograms demonstrated calcified cervical cartilages, mainly in the atlas-axis joint, and osteo arthritis-like arthropathies. This syndrome, simulating meningitis revealed the calcium pyrophosphatecrystal deposition disea

[Evaluation of 138 fractures of the cervical spine during a recent 5-year period (1979 to 1983). Therapeutic approaches].

138 cervical spine fractures are reviewed during a recent period of 5 years (1979-1983). Their frequency stay high. The serial concern 67% of men and 33% of women. We observe a peak age between 20 and 30 (23%). 65% of lesions are caused by a traffic injury, 27% by a falling down, 10% by a diving. 45% of cases interest the upper cervical spine (C1-C2) with a high proportion of odontoid process fractures (60%) and Hangman's fractures (30%); 54% of cases concern the lower cervical spine (C3-C7) with an important part of fracture-luxation (72%), specially C5-C6 (35%). Clinically, we note almost a
