The usual surgical choice of customized cage fixation is anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for cervical spondylosis with disc herniation. The safe and successful cage fixation for ACDF surgery benefits patients with cervical disc degenerative disease by easing their discomfort and regaining function. The cage prevents mobility between the vertebrae by using cage fixation to anchor the neighbouring vertebrae. The goal of the current study is to develop a customized cage-screw implant for single-level cage fixation at C4-C5 level of the cervical spine (C2-C7). The Finite Element Ana

The vertebral column plays a key role in maintaining posture, locomotion, and transmitting loads between body components. Cervical vertebrae act as a bridge between the torso and head and play a crucial role in the maintenance of head position and the visual field. Despite its importance in positional behaviors, the functional morphology of the cervical region remains poorly understood, particularly in comparison to the thoracic and lumbar sections of the spinal column. This study tests whether morphological variation in the primate cervical vertebrae correlates with differences in postural be…

Portable resuscitation-area cervical-spine radiographs (PCS) frequently constitute a routine part of the emergency evaluation of patients suffering from blunt trauma. Their adequacy and cost were evaluated by reviewing the records of 92 consecutive trauma patients. Forty-seven of 74 patients (63.5%) had adequate PCS in that all seven cervical vertebrae were visualized. In 27 patients (36.5), all seven cervical vertebrae were not adequately visualized. Inadequate studies were most likely to occur in patients with abnormal vital signs on admission (56%) (P less than .01) and in those subsequentl…

Background/Objectives: The precise localization of cervical vertebrae in X-ray imaging was essential for effective diagnosis and treatment planning, particularly as the prevalence of cervical degenerative conditions increased with an aging population. Vertebrae from C2 to C7 were commonly affected by disorders such as ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) and nerve compression caused by posterior osteophytes, necessitating thorough evaluation. However, manual annotation remained a major aspect of traditional clinical procedures, making it challenging to manage increasing p…

BACKGROUND: The curvature and range of motion of the cervical spine decrease after laminaplasty. However, to our knowledge these changes have not been studied prospectively. Also, the effect of laminaplasty on the mobility of the occipito-atlanto-axial joints has not been studied in detail. The purpose of our study was to prospectively evaluate the range of motion and curvature of the cervical spine, including the occipito-atlanto-axial joints, following laminaplasty.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of twenty-six patients who underwent cervical laminaplasty. They were followed for a

The purpose of this paper was to describe the clinical case of a 12-year-old female patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) combined with Turner syndrome (TS) and a submucous cleft palate (CP). The patient's general appearance was characterized by KFS, a clinical triad consisting of congenital fusion of at least 2 of 7 cervical vertebrae with a short neck, limited head motion, and a low posterior hairline. Three-dimensional images from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed cervical vertebrae anomalies and submucous CP. It was reported that the patient had TS and has been administered …

BACKGROUND: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a potentially serious osteopathic disorder associated with coalescing ossifications of the anterior vertebrae and may be concomitant with a constellation of symptomatology and systemic comorbidities. There is limited dental literature describing this finding on panoramic radiographs and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans.
CASE PRESENTATIONS: Two case reports of DISH are provided. One patient manifested extensive ossifications along the cervical vertebrae and consequent episodes of dysphagia and hoarseness. The other affect…

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a triad comprising cervical spine fusion, a low posterior hairline, and constrained neck movement. This triad is not universally present. The most frequent accompaniment is Sprengel's scapula deformity. According to the Feil classification, Class 1 (C1) is an immense fusion of many cervical vertebrae, Class 2 (C2) is a fusion of one or two vertebrae only, and Class 3 (C3) is coupled with thoracic and lumbar spinal vertebral fusion in addition to the fusion of the cervical vertebrae. Clarke's categorization of KFS includes other associated anomalies. The different…

Multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma, and extramedullary plasmacytoma constitute a continuous disease spectrum of plasma cell neoplasms. In the larynx, although extramedullary plasmacytoma in the supraglottic region has been sometimes reported, plasma cell neoplasm with involvement of the thyroid cartilage is extremely rare. We report a case of multiple myeloma involving the thyroid cartilage. A 72-year-old male patient presented with a pathological fracture of the cervical vertebrae. CT scan revealed low-density areas within the thyroid cartilage, but the laryngeal mucosa and submucosal so…

The authors report a 13-year-old female with shunted hydrocephalus who when evaluated for neck pain, was found to have not only fusion of cervical vertebrae but significant diminution of the cervical spine. Following our review of the classification of KFA and our case report, the current interpretation of Klippel and Feil's original description of KFA should be re-evaluated, and/or a new class of KFA used, that of complete or partial cervical vertebrae agenesis and associated abnormalities, should be considered in the classification of this anomaly.
