At the Cancer Control Agency of British Columbia, 483 patients with cancer of the esophagus and cardia were seen from 1970-1980. Four hundred and one out of 483 (83%) had tumors larger than 5 cm (T2) and in 288/483 (60%) the disease had extended beyond the esophageal wall (T3). The overall 5-year survival rate was only 9% for all patients treated by external irradiation. The 5-year survival for a selected group having esophagectomy was 20%. Human adenovirus type 2 (Ad 2) was irradiated with 137Cs gamma rays in the liquid state at 0 degree C. DNA breaks were correlated with the inactivation of several viral functions and compared to results obtained previously for irradiation of Ad 2 under frozen conditions at -75 degrees C. Irradiation at 0 degree C induced 170 +/- 20 single-strand breaks and 2.6 +/- 0.4 double-strand breaks/Gy/10(12) Da in the viral DNA. New N-containing xanthone analogs of α-mangostin were synthesized via one-pot Smiles rearrangement. Using cesium carbonate in the presence of 2-chloroacetamide and catalytic potassium iodide, α-mangostin (1) was subsequently transformed in three steps to provide ether 2, amide 3, and amine 4 in good yields at an optimum ratio of 1:3:3, respectively. Fecal samples were taken from wild ducks on the lower Rio Grande River around Las Cruces, N. Mex., from September 2000 to January 2001. This report is to address the question if black γ-polymorph of cesium tin tri-iodide (B-γ-CsSnI3) can be used as a solid-state hole-transport material in the conventional DSSCs with the N719 dye to replace the liquid electrolyte as reported by I.
