Molecular characteristics of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli from the Chicago area: high prevalence of ST131 producing CTX-M-15 in community hospitals.

This study was designed to characterise 30 non-duplicate extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli clinical isolates from the community in the Chicago metropolitan area collected during 2008. The majority of isolates (n=28) were recovered from urine and 2 isolates were from blood. Molecular characterisation was done using the following techniques: isoelectric focusing; polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing of bla(ESBL); PCR for plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance determinants; identification of ST131; phylogenetic grouping; and replicon typing. Genetic relat…

Differences between weekday and weekend air pollutant levels in Atlanta; Baltimore; Chicago; Dallas-Fort Worth; Denver; Houston; New York; Phoenix; Washington, DC; and surrounding areas.

We evaluated day-of-week differences in mean concentrations of ozone (O3) precursors (nitric oxide [NO], nitrogen oxides [NOx], carbon monoxide [CO], and volatile organic compounds [VOCs]) at monitoring sites in 23 states comprising seven geographic focus areas over the period 1998-2003. Data for VOC measurements were available for six metropolitan areas in five regions. We used Wednesdays to represent weekdays and Sundays to represent weekends; we also analyzed Saturdays. At many sites, NO, NOx, and CO mean concentrations decreased at all individual hours from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday

The relationship between life stressors and drug and sexual behaviors among a population-based sample of young Black men who have sex with men in Chicago.

Younger Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) have the highest rates of HIV incidence in the U.S. and are also exposed to high life stressors (e.g., unemployment, incarceration, and exposure to communality). This study assessed whether life stressors were related to drug use and sexual risk behaviors among a representative sample of YBMSM. The South Side of Chicago and selected adjacent suburbs represents the most populous contiguous Black community in the U.S. Over 10% of the estimated YBMSM population in this geographic region were sampled. Major findings indicated that higher life stress …

A Pilot Study of Chicago Waterways as Reservoirs of Multidrug-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (MDR-Ent) in a High-Risk Region for Community-Acquired MDR-Ent Infection in Children.

Community-acquired multidrug resistant Enterobacteriaceae (MDR-Ent) infections continue to increase in the United States. In prior studies, we identified neighboring regions in Chicago, Illinois, where children have 5 to 6 times greater odds of MDR-Ent infections. To prevent community spread of MDR-Ent, we need to identify the MDR-Ent reservoirs. A pilot study of 4 Chicago waterways for MDR-Ent and associated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) was conducted. Three waterways (A1 to A3) are labeled safe for "incidental contact recreation" (e.g., kayaking), and A4 is a nonrecreational waterway th…

A phase 2 study of cediranib in recurrent or persistent ovarian, peritoneal or fallopian tube cancer: a trial of the Princess Margaret, Chicago and California Phase II Consortia.

PURPOSE: Cediranib is a potent multitargeted inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) 1, 2 and 3. The study was initiated to evaluate the activity of cediranib in patients (pts) with recurrent ovarian, peritoneal or fallopian tube cancer (OC). METHODS: Eligible pts had persistent/recurrent OC following one prior platinum-based chemotherapy with measurable disease or progression based on Gynecologic Cancer Inter Group CA-125 criteria. Because of toxicities observed in the first 23 pts, the initial starting dose of oral daily (od) cediranib was reduced from 45mg to 30mg.

When Manometry and Functional Lumen Imaging Probe Disagree: The Current Limitations of the Chicago Classification Version 4.0 and Probable Extended Indications of Functional Lumen Imaging Probe.

High-resolution manometry (HRM) has revolutionized evaluation of esophageal motility disorders, offering detailed pressure topography and refined diagnostic criteria codified through the Chicago classification (CC). However, patients with dysphagia may present with borderline or near-normal HRM findings, exhibiting clinically significant symptoms. CC version 4.0 (v4.0) addresses such scenarios by recommending provocative maneuvers and ancillary tests, notably functional lumen imaging probe (FLIP) and timed barium esophagography. However, growing evidence indicates that FLIP, which measures lum…

Corrigendum to "Persistent and Toxic Chemical Pollutants in Fish Consumed by Asians in Chicago, United States" [Sci. Total Environ. 811 (2022):152214/ DOI:10.1016/j.scitotenv.2021.152214].

Consumption of seafood brings health benefits but may increase the ingestion of contaminants. Compared with other ethnic groups in the U.S., Asians consume seafood more frequently. However, there is little information about how culturally specific fish consumption contributes to exposure to toxicants. In this work, we surveyed fish consumption among Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese communities and purchased 103 seafood samples from local markets in Chicago. Each sample was analyzed for mercury (Hg) and 92 organic chemicals including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OC…

The drivers of West Nile virus human illness in the Chicago, Illinois, USA area: Fine scale dynamic effects of weather, mosquito infection, social, and biological conditions.

West Nile virus (WNV) has consistently been reported to be associated with human cases of illness in the region near Chicago, Illinois. However, the number of reported cases of human illness varies across years, with intermittent outbreaks. Several dynamic factors, including temperature, rainfall, and infection status of vector mosquito populations, are responsible for much of these observed variations. However, local landscape structure and human demographic characteristics also play a key role. The geographic and temporal scales used to analyze such complex data affect the observed associati…
