Varicella infection is not associated with increasing prevalence of eczema: a U.S. population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Chickenpox infection early in childhood has previously been shown to protect against the development of childhood eczema in line with the hygiene hypothesis. In 1995, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended routine vaccination against varicella zoster virus in the United States. Subsequently, rates of chickenpox infection have dramatically decreased in childhood. OBJECTIVES: We sought to understand the impact of declining rates of chickenpox infection on the prevalence of eczema. METHODS: We analysed data from 207 007 children in the 1997-2013 National Health Interview Sur…

Exploring the Seasonal Drivers of Varicella Zoster Virus Transmission and Reactivation.

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a herpesvirus that causes chickenpox and shingles. The biological mechanisms underpinning the multidecadal latency of VZV in the body and subsequent viral reactivation-which occurs in approximately 30% of individuals-are largely unknown. Because chickenpox and shingles are endemic worldwide, understanding the relationship between VZV transmission and reactivation is important for informing disease treatment and control. While chickenpox is a vaccine-preventable childhood disease with a rich legacy of research, shingles is not a notifiable disease in most countri…

The management of varicella-zoster virus exposure and infection in pregnancy and the newborn period. Australasian Subgroup in Paediatric Infectious Diseases of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases.

Zoster immunoglobulin (ZIG) should be offered to pregnant, varicella-seronegative women with significant exposure to varicella-zoster virus (VZV) (chickenpox) infection. Oral aciclovir prophylaxis should be considered for susceptible pregnant women exposed to VZV who did not receive ZIG or have risk factors for severe disease. Intravenous aciclovir should be given to pregnant women who develop complicated varicella at any stage of pregnancy. Counselling on the risk of congenital varicella syndrome is recommended for pregnant women who develop chickenpox. ZIG should be given to a baby whose mot…

[Epidemiology of varicella in spain pre-and post-vaccination periods].

BACKGROUND: Varicella virus can cause two different diseases: chickenpox and herpes zoster. In 2005 varicella vaccine has been introduced in the Spanish national vaccination schedule for 10-14 years old non-immune people, in order to reduce the severity of the disease. In 2007 a new surveillance protocol with aggregate data for chickenpox and herpes zoster was approved in order to detect any change in age distribution, severity and complications of the chickenpox and herpes zoster cases. The aim of this study is to know the burden of diseases (in the last ten years). METHODS: Number of cases,…

MiR-497 suppresses angiogenesis and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma by inhibiting VEGFA and AEG-1.

BACKGROUND: Biological interactions between varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles), two diseases caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), continue to be debated including the potential effect on shingles cases following the introduction of universal childhood chickenpox vaccination programs. We investigated how chickenpox vaccination in Alberta impacts the incidence and age-distribution of shingles over 75 years post-vaccination, taking into consideration a variety of plausible theories of waning and boosting of immunity. METHODS: We developed an agent-based model representing…

BACKGROUND: Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection during pregnancy is associated with serious fetal anomalies. The live-attenuated VZV vaccine was approved in 1995, so many vaccinated women are now of childbearing age. The question of long-term immunity to varicella is critical because breakthrough chickenpox can occur after vaccination. OBJECTIVE: To comp…

[Primary infection with varicella-zoster virus in risk groups].

INTRODUCTION: Chickenpox represents the primary form of Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection and appears most commonly in preschool and school children. The clinical course of chickenpox in immunocompetent children is mainly mild and complications are rare (1-5). Adults and immunocompromised patients are considered to be risk groups for development of serious and even life-threatening complications. The most frequent bacterial complications include secondary bacterial skin infections, angina, sinusitis, otitis and bronchopneumonia. Central nervous system complications, visceral dissemination…

Vaccination campaign at a temporary camp for victims of the earthquake in Lorca (Spain).

Outbreaks in temporary camps are an important risk for the health of the displaced population. The town of Lorca (Murcia, Spain) suffered 2 earthquakes on May 2011 that required the re-housing of 1,424 victims in a temporary camp. Following 4 cases of chickenpox control measures were adopted among the displaced population. These measures included vaccination against chickenpox; due to the existence of cases of measles in adjacent regions, it was decided to offer measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination as well. The immunization campaign was performed during 2 d (3 to 4 d after the first ca…

Varicella Orchitis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Orchitis secondary to chickenpox (Varicella orchitis) is a rare sequelae of a common condition with only nine reports available from the current literature. We describe a case of orchitis secondary to chickenpox in a young male including the management and follow-up. In addition, the authors conducted a comprehensive review of the existing literature. In conclusion, orchitis secondary to chickenpox may lead to testicular atrophy, with potential implications for spermatogenesis, fertility and endocrine function yet to be established.

[Varicella zoster pneumonia].

Varicella (chickenpox) is a common contagious infection of childhood, with fewer than 2% of the cases occurring in adults. Since the early 1980s the incidence of chickenpox in adults has been increasing and only 7% of them are seronegative for Varicella zoster antibodies. Pneumonia, although rare, is the most common and serious complication of chickenpox infection in adults. The authors present an illustrative case of varicella pneumonia in an immunocompetent adult with smoking habits and make a brief thematic review.

Varicella pneumonitis in an immunocompetent patient.

Varicella zoster virus is known by many different names, including chickenpox virus, varicella virus, zoster virus and human herpes virus type 3, and it causes chickenpox. Primary chickenpox skin involvement is a benign and self-limiting condition. The incidence in the Western world is on the rise. Varicella pneumonitis is a potentially fatal complication. Immunocompromised patients develop aggressive lung disease, but immunocompetent can have serious pulmonary compromise. Timely ICU support, respiratory intervention and antiviral therapy play a key role in improving outcomes. Aciclovir is an …

Herpes zoster during pregnancy.

QUESTION: One of my pregnant patients, a 32-year-old woman (gravida 2, para 1), has a flare up of herpes zoster (HZ) at the T11 to T12 dermatomes. This virus, the varicella-zoster virus, causes chickenpox, which can be teratogenic. Is this also true for HZ? ANSWER: Herpes zoster, unlike chickenpox, is not associated with increased fetal risk. In contrast, a nonimmune woman exposed to HZ by contact might contract chickenpox.

[Varicella vaccination].

Chickenpox is generally considered a benign childhood disease. However, serious complications may arise. A safe and efficient vaccine is available, and universal chickenpox vaccination is already introduced in many countries. Denmark, among other countries, has been reluctant to introduce the vaccine due to insufficient information on disease burden and concerns regarding herpes zoster incidence and a potential age shift. In this review, we present current knowledge regarding the disease burden of chickenpox in Denmark and discuss perspectives on introducing the vaccine in Denmark.

[Summary of the multidisciplinary guideline 'Varicella'].

The multidisciplinary guideline 'Varicella' provides guidelines for diagnosis, therapy, and prevention of chickenpox. At the first pregnancy check, patients should be questioned about previous chickenpox; in case of a negative or doubtful history varicella zoster virus (VZV) serology is indicated. VZV antibody determination is also indicated in patients considered for immunosuppressive therapy and for healthcare workers with a negative VZV history who are in contact with immunocompromised patients. Administration of VZV immunoglobulin within 96 hours following VZV contact can mitigate the infe…

Sudden deafness as an initial presentation of varicella: case report and literature review.

Varicella, or chickenpox, is a highly contagious disease transmitted by the varicella zoster virus (VZV). Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) has been defined as a loss of at least 30 dB over at least three frequencies on audiogram within three days and with an uncertain cause. Deafness caused by varicella-zoster virus occasionally occurred in Ramsey hunter syndrome but associated with chickenpox is rare. We present a case of an adult varicella infection with sudden deafness as the first symptom. The patient begins with a sudden hearing loss in his left ear and developed feve…

Transfer factor for the prevention of varicella-zoster infection in childhood leukemia.

Sixty-one patients with leukemia and no immunity to chickenpox were given dialyzable transfer factor or placebo and followed for 12 to 30 months in a double-blind trial designed to examine the clinical efficacy of transfer factor. Sixteen patients in the transfer-factor group and 15 in the placebo group were exposed to varicella zoster, and most of them had a rise in antibody titer. Chickenpox developed in 13 of 15 exposed patients in the placebo group but in only one of 16 in the transfer-factor group (P = 1.3 x 10(-5)). In the patients treated with transfer factor and exposed to varicella wi…

Prevalence of a history of prior varicella/herpes zoster infection in multiple sclerosis.

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection has been implicated in multiple sclerosis (MS), but direct causal involvement has been disputed. Nevertheless, knowledge of VZV exposure is important, given the risk of serious complications of first exposure while undergoing immunosuppressive treatment, in particular with fingolimod. We distributed questionnaires to MS clinic patients, requesting information about history of chickenpox, sibling/household/occupational exposure, history of zoster (shingles), and disease-modifying treatment. A random, proportionally representative sample of 51 patients that…

[Measles, Rubella, Mumps and Varicella Seropositivity in Health Technician Students: A Seroprevalence Study].

Measles, rubella, mumps and chickenpox infections are among the childhood diseases that can be prevented by vaccination. Healthcare workers are at greater risk of diseases transmitted through contact with patients' respiratory secretions, infected blood and body fluids. Students studying in the field of health are at the risk of encountering infectious diseases as much as healthcare personnel during their internship and practice experience in healthcare institutions during their education. In addition, due to the risk of these students becoming a source of contamination to the patients they en…

Association between malignant disease in children and maternal virus infections.

The possibility of an association between virus infections during pregnancy and subsequent malignant disease in the child has been investigated using retrospective data from the Oxford Survey of Childhood Cancers. Such an association appears to exist for influenza, chickenpox, and possibly rubella. For influenza and rubella the estimated risk is small; the data do not permit an estimate to be made directly in the case of chickenpox. It is suggested that there may be a specific association between maternal chickenpox and tumours of the nervous system. It is important to emphasize that, even if t…
