A rare adverse effect of metronidazole: nervous system symptoms.

Metronidazole, as a 5-nitroimidazole compound, is effective on anaerobic bacteria and protozoon diseases. Mostly, metronidazole is a tolerable drug but rarely presents serious adverse effects on the nervous system. In case of these adverse effects, treatment must be stopped. In this report, a 3-year-old child hospitalized because of diarrhea is presented. During the metronidazole treatment, loss of sight, vertigo, ataxia, and headache occurred as the adverse effects. By this report, we want to express the rare adverse effects of drugs in the differential diagnoses of nervous system diseases.

Respiratory syncytial viral infection in an infant with unrepaired anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery.

Abnormal origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) is a rare coronary anomaly in children that requires necessary and urgent repair. We report a child who was hospitalized with respiratory failure due respiratory syncytial viral (RSV) infection and was subsequently diagnosed with ALCAPA. Aggressive treatment for RSV included synagis and nebulized ribavirin prior to surgical repair. After waiting 4 weeks for the RSV infection to resolve, she underwent successful left coronary artery reimplantation on hospital day 27 and has regained normal left ventricular size and f

Acute quadriplegic myopathy in a 16-month-old child.

We present a case of a 16-month old previously healthy child who was hospitalized because of an acute respiratory insufficiency most likely caused by a viral infection and who then developed a severe acute quadriplegic myopathy (AQM). Initial clinical symptoms were respiratory acidosis, dypnea, intense wheezing, and deterioration of the level of consciousness, which required orotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation. We administered neuromuscular blocking agents, corticosteroids, and antibiotics. After 9 days the clinical picture improved. An attempt to wean from the ventilator failed.

[Treatment of life threatening asthma with isoflurane].

Three patients, one adult, one adolescent and one child, with previous history of asthma difficult to treat and frequent acute crisis, were hospitalized with clinical signs of Life Threatening Asthma (LTA) refractory to intensive treatment, including intubation and mechanical ventilation, being treated with and inhaled anesthetic: Isoflurane. All patients responded satisfactorily to such treatment at a concentration varying from 0.5 to 1.5% and none of them suffered adverse reactions to the medication. The immediate therapeutic effect and the absence of intensive care are factors that indicate

How do we talk to the children? Child life consultation to support the children of seriously ill adult inpatients.

BACKGROUND: Families with young children often struggle to talk about and cope with a parent's life-threatening illness and potential death. Adult interdisciplinary palliative medicine teams often feel unprepared to facilitate the open communication with these children that has been shown to reduce anxiety, depression, and other behavioral problems. In pediatric settings, child life specialists routinely provide this support to hospitalized children as well as their siblings and parents. Although these services are the standard of care in pediatrics, no research reports their use in the care o

Home care of children and youth with complex health care needs and technology dependencies.

Children and youth with complex medical issues, especially those with technology dependencies, experience frequent and often lengthy hospitalizations. Hospital discharges for these children can be a complicated process that requires a deliberate, multistep approach. In addition to successful discharges to home, it is essential that pediatric providers develop and implement an interdisciplinary and coordinated plan of care that addresses the child's ongoing health care needs. The goal is to ensure that each child remains healthy, thrives, and obtains optimal medical home and developmental suppo

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome mimicking child abuse by burning.

Child abuse by burning comprises 6-20% of all child abuse cases, but misdiagnosis may arise in cases of some medical conditions. We present two cases of suspected inflicted burns, later diagnosed as staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS). In case 1, a 6-month-old girl was referred to hospital for small round ulcerations on the face and abdomen, resembling cigarette burns. Because of the inconsistency of the mother's report (insect bites) with the injury pattern and an unstable family history, hospitalization was decided. The following day, new bullous lesions were visible on the neck and

Mother-child interactions and the associations with child healthcare utilization in low-income urban families.

Studies have demonstrated that low-income families often have disproportionately high utilization of emergency department (ED) and hospital services, and low utilization of preventive visits. A possible contributing factor is that some mothers may not respond optimally to their infants' health needs, either due to their own responsiveness or due to the child's ability to send cues. These mother-child interactions are measurable and amenable to change. We examined the associations between mother-child interactions and child healthcare utilization among low-income families. We analyzed data from

Investigating the Correlation of Stress of Parents of Premature Children in a Neonatal Unit with Ways of Coping and the Conditions of Visiting NICU Due to Covid-19 Isolation.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing was considered to be the most effective measure to maintain infection control. As a result, parents have little or no access to the NICUs of their premature infants. AIM: Of this study was to investigate the association of stress of preterm parents in a NICU with coping measures and visitation conditions due to isolation from Covid-19. RESULTS: Our sample consisted of 62 parents; 35 (56.5%) were mothers, whose newborns were hospitalized in the NICU from November 2021 to April 2022. 35.5% of premature babies were girls with an aver

Febrile Neutropenia in Children with Cancer: Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Febrile neutropenia is one of the major acute side effects of intensive treatment in pediatric cancer, necessitating prompt initiation of empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics. Patients may be classified as low or high risk according some risk factors (duration of neutropenia, depth of neutropenia, type of cancer, state of disease, bone marrow involvement, type of treatment, additional health problems). Initial evaluation of the febrile neutropenic child should include the history of the child, a detailed physical examination, blood culture (peripheral and catheter), urinalysis and
