Bat-Associated Parvoviruses: High Genetic Diversity and Novel Viruses in Gia Lai and Dong Nai Provinces, Vietnam.

Bats are recognized as key reservoirs for diverse viruses, including members of the Parvoviridae family. Vietnam hosts an exceptionally wide variety of bat species, yet the diversity of parvoviruses in these populations remains largely unexplored. This study provides the first survey of parvoviruses in bats from Gia Lai and Dong Nai provinces, screening 150 samples from 26 bat species and detecting parvoviruses in 38 (25%). A total of 45 viral operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified, encompassing four parvoviral subfamilies: Parvovirinae, Densovirinae, Penbrevirinae, and Hamavirinae

Viral reservoir dynamics in bats and interactions with vectors: Global and Türkiye perspectives.

Bats are natural reservoirs for over 4400 viruses across 110 recognized viral families due to their high species diversity, long lifespans, and unique physiological adaptations. Their tolerance to viral infections without clinical disease stems from constitutive interferon-alpha (IFN-α) activity, high metabolic rates during flight, and tightly regulated inflammatory responses. Anthropogenic pressures including deforestation and urbanization intensify human-bat contact, facilitating viral spillover. Beyond direct transmission, bat-associated ectoparasites - ticks, bat flies, and mosquitoes - ma

Host-Driven Genetic Diversity of Leptospira in the Americas: A Continental Perspective.

Leptospira is a genetically diverse genus of spirochetes comprising over 68 species, including several pathogenic taxa such as L. interrogans, L. santarosai, L. noguchii, and L. weilii. These bacteria infect a wide range of vertebrates, especially mammals, with infected animals serving as renal carriers that excrete the pathogen through urine. While rodents are the primary reservoirs for some species, multiple vertebrate orders participate in Leptospira transmission cycles in the Americas. This study aimed to assess and compare the genetic diversity of Leptospira populations across mammalian h

Single-Cell Landscape of the Cochlea Revealed Cell-Type-Specific Diversification in Hipposideros armiger Based on PacBio Long-Read Sequencing.

Echolocation represents one of the most rapid adaptive sensorimotor modulation behaviors observed in mammals, establishing bats as one of the most evolutionarily successful mammals. Bats rely on high-frequency hearing for survival, but our understanding of its cellular molecular basis is scattered and segmented. Herein, we constructed the first single-cell transcriptomic landscape of the cochlea in Hipposideros armiger, a CF-FM bat, using a PacBio-optimized genome and compared it with the results obtained from unoptimized original genomes. Sixteen distinct cell types were distributed across fi

First report of microplastics in the gastrointestinal tracts of North American insectivorous bats.

BACKGROUND: Microplastics (MPs) are among the many ubiquitous environmental contaminants of emerging concern for both aquatic and terrestrial species. Bats have integral roles in aquatic-terrestrial food webs on almost every continent, are exposed to a wide variety of environmental contaminants, and yet have received limited investigation about the threat of MPs. While MPs have been detected in numerous bird species and in bats of the Amazon, there are no published studies documenting the dietary MP exposure of North American bats that consume many terrestrial and aquatic arthropods or the pos

The raphe nuclear organization and serotonergic system in the bat (Artibeus planirostris).

5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), widely recognized as serotonin, is a multifunctional substance present across various body tissues, performing as a neurotransmitter within the nervous framework. Serotonergic neurons are predominantly localized within the raphe nuclei of the brainstem, rendering neuronal 5-HT a definitive marker for these nuclei. Research has substantiated serotonin's role in the modulation of thermoregulation, appetite, reproductive drive, circadian patterns, slumber, motoric activity, and cognitive processing. While the anatomical structure of serotonergic systems has undergone e

Morphological and molecular data on the bat flies, Basilia silvae (Brèthes, 1913) and Trichobius parasiticus Gervais, 1844 parasitizing Chilean bats.

Among mammals, bats harbour the greatest taxonomic diversity of ectoparasitic arthropods. This is mainly due to their high mobility, wide distribution range and gregarious social behaviour. In Chile, 17 species of bats have been reported; however, their ectoparasitic arthropofauna has been little studied. There are currently 12 taxa recorded, belonging to two classes and associated with only four species of bats. This study aimed to investigate the diversity of parasitic flies associated with bats in three ecoregions: Atacama Desert, Chilean Matorral and Valdivian temperate forest. During 2021

The effect of group size on sleep in a neotropical bat, Artibeus jamaicensis.

Sleep is associated with many costs, but is also important to survival, with a lack of sleep impairing cognitive function and increasing mortality. Sleeping in groups could alleviate sleep-associated costs, or could introduce new costs if social sleeping disrupts sleep. Working with the Jamaican fruit bat (Artibeus jamaicensis), we aimed to: (1) describe sleep architecture, (2) assess how sleeping in groups affects sleep, and (3) quantify total sleep time and identify rapid eye movement (REM) sleep using behavioral indicators that complement physiological evidence of sleep. Heterogeneity in the preferential diet of neotropical bats impacts the pancreatic islet mass and α and β cell distribution.

Whether there is a relationship between bats' dietary patterns and evolutionary endocrine pancreas adaptation is not clearly understood. Aiming to contribute to this topic, we evaluated some metabolic and structural parameters in the following adult bats: the frugivorous Artibeus lituratus, the nectarivorous Anoura caudifer, the hematophagous Desmodus rotundus, and the insectivorous Molossus molossus. A. lituratus and A. caudifer diets consist of high amounts of simple carbohydrates, while D. rotundus and M. molossus diets consist of high amounts of proteins or protein and fat, respectively. I

Comparative study of endocrine pancreatic tissue in bats: Assessing variations among frugivorous, insectivorous, and nectarivorous diets.

Whether the endocrine pancreas exhibits structural features to couple with dietary patterns is not fully explored. Considering the lack of data comparing endocrine pancreas and islet cell distribution among different bat species in the same study, we considered this an opportunity to explore the topic, including five species within three different predominant diets. For this, we applied morphometric techniques to compare the islets of frugivorous Artibeus lituratus and Carollia perspicillata, insectivorous Molossus molossus and Myotis nigricans, and nectarivorous Glossophaga soricina bats. Coordinated inflammatory responses dictate Marburg virus control by reservoir bats.

Bats are increasingly recognized as reservoirs of emerging zoonotic pathogens. Egyptian rousette bats (ERBs) are the known reservoir of Marburg virus (MARV), a filovirus that causes deadly Marburg virus disease (MVD) in humans. However, ERBs harbor MARV asymptomatically, likely due to a coadapted and specific host immunity-pathogen relationship. Recently, we measured transcriptional responses in MARV-infected ERB whole tissues, showing that these bats possess a disease tolerant strategy that limits pro-inflammatory gene induction, presumably averting MVD-linked immunopathology. However, the ho

Empowering Riverine Communities in the Amazon: Strategies for Preventing Rabies.

Rabies, caused by the Lyssavirus genus, is a highly lethal zoonotic disease transmitted by animals such as bats and domestic and wild carnivores to humans, claiming nearly 100% of lives. In Brazil, recent evidence suggests an increasing role of bats in human deaths from rabies, particularly in the Amazon region. This neglected tropical disease disproportionately affects impoverished and vulnerable populations in rural areas, where approximately 80% of human cases are concentrated. This article presents research conducted in riverine communities of the Tapajós/Arapiuns Extractive Reserve in Bra

The Origins of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2.

An outbreak of severe pneumonia of unknown cause was identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019: the causative agent was a novel betacoronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome-cotonavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), a virus that joins a list of coronaviruses causing severe (e.g., SARS and Middle East respiratory syndrome) or milder (e.g., 229E, OC43, NL63, and HKU1) respiratory tract infection. The World Health Organization (WHO) classified the spreading outbreak as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Many SARS-related coronaviruses (SARSr-CoVs) have been identified in bats, particularly in Rhinolophus hor

The origin and evolution of emerged swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus with zoonotic potential.

Swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV) is a newly discovered alphacoronavirus with zoonotic potential that causes diarrhea and vomiting mainly in piglets. Having emerged suddenly in 2017, the prevailing opinion is that the virus originated from HKU2, an alphacoronavirus whose primary host is bats, and at some unknown point achieved interspecies transmission via some intermediate. Here, we further explore the evolutionary history and possible cross-species transmission event for SADS-CoV. Coevolutionary analysis demonstrated that HKU2 may have achieved host switch via SADS-related

Cross-species comparison illuminates the importance of iron homeostasis for splenic anti-immunosenescence.

Although immunosenescence may result in increased morbidity and mortality, many mammals have evolved effective immune coping strategies to extend their lifespans. Thus, the immune systems of long-lived mammals present unique models to study healthy longevity. To identify the molecular clues of anti-immunosenescence, we first built high-quality reference genome for a long-lived myotis bat, and then compared three long-lived mammals (i.e., bat, naked mole rat, and human) versus the short-lived mammal, mouse, in splenic immune cells at single-cell resolution. A close relationship between B:T cell

Communicating the risks of handling bats: analysing approaches used by Australian stakeholders in the context of Australian bat lyssavirus.

Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) is a member of the Lyssavirus genus of the Rhabdoviridae family and is found in Australian bat species. It is of public health concern because of the rabies-like syndrome it causes in humans, resulting in government health and wildlife agencies using varied communication approaches to inform targeted audiences about zoonotic risks associated with handling bats. Despite these warnings, the number of reports of human-bat interactions remains high. This paper details a survey conducted to analyse the approaches utilised by a range of stakeholders to educate and co

Study on the relation of the characteristics of the capture sites with the Leptospira spp. occurrence in bats and rodents from Yucatan, Mexico.

This study aims to describe the natural Leptospira occurrence in small mammals from Yucatan, Mexico, and to explore the relation between the characteristics of the capture sites and the Leptospira occurrence. Bats and rodents were captured in five sites of Yucatan state, and from them, a kidney fragment was collected that was used in the genomic DNA extraction. Leptospira DNA was identified by PCR targeting the 16S-rRNA and LipL32 genes. Additionally, a bioinformatic analysis was carried out to know the Leptospira species and was corroborated with a phylogenetic tree. The assemblage of small m

Common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) abundance and frequency of attacks to cattle in landscapes of Yucatan, Mexico.

Desmodus rotundus is one of the wild animal species that has benefitted by habitat alteration and its population has increased due to livestock activities. Common vampire bat population management has been implemented across Mexico due to the economic losses to livestock production, inflicted by vampire bat attacks and rabies transmission. Yucatan is one of the seven most impacted states in Mexico by the number of cattle rabies cases per year. However, there is little research on D. rotundus populations such as the frequency and attack patterns to cattle. This study's objective was to analyze

Ecological determinants of rabies virus dynamics in vampire bats and spillover to livestock.

The pathogen transmission dynamics in bat reservoirs underpin efforts to reduce risks to human health and enhance bat conservation, but are notoriously challenging to resolve. For vampire bat rabies, the geographical scale of enzootic cycles, whether environmental factors modulate baseline risk, and how within-host processes affect population-level dynamics remain unresolved. We studied patterns of rabies exposure using an 11-year, spatially replicated sero-survey of 3709 Peruvian vampire bats and co-occurring outbreaks in livestock. Seroprevalence was correlated among nearby sites but fluctua
