A fluorescent antibody staining method was developed to detect Chlamydia trachomatis elementary bodies in Papanicolaou-stained cervical smears. Twenty-five known chlamydia-positive and 12 chlamydia-negative smears were correctly identified using this method. Chlamydia trachomatis infection is now the commonest bacterial, sexually transmitted infection in the UK. Uncomplicated genital chlamydial infection often does not produce symptoms in men or women, but patients may present with sequelae. New diagnostic techniques are available to identify C. trachomatis more easily and new antibiotic regimens provide effective treatment. These factors, together with heightened awareness within the medical profession and the general population, should help to reduce the prevalence of this infection.

A group of 662 women in our gynecologic OPD were screened for Chlamydia trachomatis with direct immunofluorecence monoclonal antibody (DFA) staining technique. Their age distribution ranged from 16 to 60 years old. The overall positivity rate was 26.3%. Of the 269 pregnant women, 64 cases were found to have Chlamydia trachomatis infection, an infection rate of 23.74%. A retrospective analysis of 7,879 direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) tests for Chlamydia trachomatis obtained over 24 months from a routine screening program for adolescent women is reported. Tests were positive in 563 women of ages 13 to 24 (mean = 18.1). Monthly positivity rates ranged from 2.59% to 14.02%. The treatment of chlamydial urethritis in males depends on the susceptibility of Chlamydia trachomatis to different antimicrobial agents. Tetracyclines seem to be the drugs of choice; long-acting tetracyclines are recommended, as these are more convenient for the patient.
