Cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid concentrations of VLDL, LDL and HDL were studied in 20 patients with primary type IIb, 25 patients with primary type IV and in 18 controls. Both types are not only characterized by different concentrations of lipoprotein lipids, but also by their different lipid composition. Type IIb had more triglycerides in the LDL, type IV in the LDL and HDL. The HDL cholesterol content of type IV was decreased. The percent phospholipid concentration of HDL was identical in the 3 groups, demonstrating the constant role of this lipid fraction. The lipid relationship

SCOPE: The Mediterranean (MED) diet has been associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular diseases. It is unclear whether this health effect can be mainly contributed to high intakes of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), characteristic for the MED diet, or whether other components of a MED diet also play an important role.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A randomized fully controlled parallel trial is performed to examine the effects of the consumption of a saturated fatty acid rich diet, a MUFA-rich diet, or a MED diet for 8 weeks on metabolite profiles, in 47 subjects at risk of the metabolic s

To determine the metabolic regulation of the apoproteins of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) by estrogen and progesterone, 12 ovariectomized and hysterectomized baboons were fed a high cholesterol, high fat diet and were divided into four groups. One of these groups was the untreated control and the remaining three groups were treated with estrogen, progesterone, or a combination of both. After 10 months of treatment, there were significant differences in HDL apolipoprotein (apo) A-I and apo A-II levels in these groups. The apo A-I level was highest in baboons treated with the combination thera

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have demonstrated suppression of aortic atherosclerosis by dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors in hypercholesterolemic mice. However, it remains unknown whether DPP-4 inhibitors also exert anti-atherogenic effects in coronary arteries. We examined the effect of anagliptin, a DPP-4 inhibitor, on atherosclerosis development in the aorta and coronary arteries in a high-cholesterol diet-fed rabbits.
METHODS: Japanese white rabbits were fed either normal chow (n=8) or a diet containing 0.5% cholesterol (n=34) for 14weeks. Cholesterol-fed rabbits were given 0.3%

Because different strains of hamsters vary in their susceptibility to gallstones, the relationship between plasma lipoproteins, hepatic cholesterol, bile lipids and bile acid profile was examined during gallstone induction in strains of male Syrian hamsters from Charles River Lakeview (CHR), Biobreeder F1B (BIO) and Harlan Sprague-Dawley (HAR). Gallstones were induced by feeding a purified diet containing 0.4 or 0.8% cholesterol for 5 wk. Basal plasma total cholesterol was similar, but the hypercholesterolemia induced by dietary challenge was significantly lower in CHR than in HAR and BIO hams

Hyperlipoproteinemia phenotypes (HLP), one of genetic disorders with an estimated prevalence of 0.5-2% in the general population, is responsible for 10% of premature CHD. After first screening with the high cholesterol (>6.47 mM/l) and triglyceride (TG) (>2.6 mM/l) levels without medication, subjects were typed for HLP classification. Differential metabolic effects of HLP types on plasma lipid profiles and the reverse cholesterol transport system (RCT) were studied in 196 HLP types (91.2%) and 19 non-HLP (8.8%). A total of 45% of subjects had primary HLP and the others had NIDDM (10.7%), hyper

Dyslipidemia, characterized by higher serum concentrations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), triglyceride (TG), and lower serum concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), is confirmed as a hallmark of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), posing serious risks to the future health of humans. Aside from the role of HDL-C concentrations, the capacity of cholesterol efflux to HDL is being identified as an enssential messurement for the dyslipidemic morbidity. Through inducing the progression of reverse cholesterol trans

BACKGROUND: Studies in patients with low HDL have suggested that impaired cellular cholesterol efflux is a heritable phenotype increasing atherosclerosis risk. Less is known about the association of macrophage cholesterol efflux with lipid profiles and CAD risk in normolipidemic subjects. We have therefore measured macrophage cholesterol efflux in 142 normolipidemic subjects undergoing coronary angiography.
METHODS: Monocytes isolated from blood samples of patients scheduled for cardiac catheterization were differentiated into macrophages over seven days. Isotopic cholesterol efflux to exogen

Hypertriglyceridemia is a common lipid disorder as well as hypercholesterolemia. However clinical significance of hypertriglyceridemia is not fully understood because of its heterogeneous lipoprotein phenotypes and complex etiology. Severe hypertriglyceridemia increases the risk for pancreatitis, whereas mild or moderate hypertriglyceridemia may be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Patients with hypertriglyceridemia are usually accompanied by other cardiovascular related disorders, such as central obesity, type 2 diabetes, and liver steatosis. Ectopic fat accumulation is often seen in

The studies covered 60 men (average age 43.5 +/- 6.5 years), carrying on managerial functions (average length of employment 8.3 +/- 2.5 years). All subjects underwent standard determinations of total cholesterol (Liebermann--Burchard's method) and triglycerides (using Boehringer's enzymatic set) and lypoproteins electrophoretic distribution on polyacrylamid gel (Ames' firm). In 31 subjects lypoproteins distribution was performed, through precipitation, into fractions HDL, LDL and HLDL, in which the contents of cholesterol and triglycerides have been determined. In 40% of subjects, hyperlypopro

Chronic vitamin C deficiency was induced in guinea pigs by restricting their vitamin C intake to 0.5 mg daily. This was just sufficient to prevent rapidly fatal scurvy and 55 per cent of the animals survived. In 16 weeks their serum ascorbic acid (SAA) fell to 0.16 +/- 0.06 mg/dl as compared to 0.73 +/- 0.11 in control animals receiving 5 mg vitamin C daily. There was a marked increase in serum cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, VLDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and total lipids. HDL-cholesterol was, however, decreased resulting in a shift of the LDL/HDL ratio from 1.13 +/- 0.16 in the control to 5.9…

Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a long-term metabolic condition frequently linked to lipid imbalances, which may elevate the risk of cardiovascular complications. Abnormalities in lipid profiles, such as increased cholesterol and triglycerides and decreased high-density lipoproteins (HDL), are commonly observed in diabetic individuals. Natural plant extracts, including Catharanthus roseus, have long been recognized for their medicinal properties, although their potential impact on lipid profiles requires further investigation. Objective To evaluate the effects of methanol leaf extract of

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: p-Coumaric acid (CA), a 4-hydroxycinnamic acid derivative, is widely distributed in nature and exerts various beneficial biological effects. However, the effects of CA on metabolic abnormalities triggered by excessive fructose intake, such as dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and insulin resistance, have not been sufficiently investigated. Our objective was to investigate whether CA ameliorates high-fructose diet (HFrD)-induced metabolic dysregulation.
MATERIALS/METHODS: Golden Syrian hamsters were randomly assigned to 3 groups and

The determination of alpha-tocopherol, free cholesterol, esterified cholesterols and triacylglycerols in human plasma and in fractions containing individual lipoproteins was achieved by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The lipoprotein fractions, such as chylomicron, VLDL, LDL, HDL2 and HDL3, were collected by ultracentrifugation of human plasma. The chromatographic separation was accomplished with a column packed with Hitachi Gel 3057, which is a spherical octadecylsilica of particle size 3 microns. The mobile phase was acetonitrile-2-propanol (75:25, v/v), and the

Plasma levels of cholesterol (C), triglycerides (TG), phospholipids (PL) (in total plasma, very low density [VLDL], low density (LDL), and high density [HDL] lipoproteins) and of two apolipoproteins (apo-B and apo-A) were studied in 13 hyperlipidemic patients suffering from hypertension and/or stable angina and treated by metoprolol or propranolol. Propranolol reduced the low density and high density lipoprotein phospholipids by 26% and 11%, respectively, and increased the very low density phospholipids by 24%. Metoprolol had only a transient effect on high density lipoprotein phospholipids. V
