Multiple hereditary osteochondromata is a disorder consisting of multiple projections of bone (exostoses) capped by cartilage. The lesions are most numerous in the metaphyses of long bones but may appear on diaphyses of long bones and on flat bones and vertebrae. The transmission is autosomal dominant. Sarcomatous transformation is uncommon and probably occurs in fewer than 1% of patients. The more common indications for surgical excision of lesions are pain, growth disturbance, compromised joint motion, cosmesis, and secondary impingement of tendon, nerve, or vessel. Excision of the lesions i…

A case of unilateral condylar hyperplasia combined with synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is presented. Clinical and radiographic findings were consistent with an active unilateral hyperplasia. A high condylectomy was performed. During the operation numerous cartilaginous particles discharged from the TMJ and so it became clear that the patient was also suffering from chondromatosis. Both conditions were confirmed by histological examination.

Cartilaginous tumors arising from the skull or intracranial structures are infrequently seen. There have been 112 such cases reported. They are most commonly found in the middle fossa and the parasellar region. They arise from cartilaginous rests in the base of the skull, particularly around the basal synchondroses. Occasional cases of intracranial growths also show lesions in peripheral bones. The authors have encountered a case in which chondroma was a manifestation of generalized chondromatosis. The patient was a 25-year-old male, who complained of diplopia in May 1975. He noted ptosis in h…

CASE SUMMARY: A 9-year-old, male castrated domestic shorthair cat was presented for evaluation of progressive right pelvic limb lameness. Orthopedic examination revealed a weightbearing lameness of the right pelvic limb and a mass over the medial aspect of the right stifle, which elicited pain upon palpation. Preoperative complete blood count and serum biochemistry panel were unremarkable. Radiographs and CT identified a mass at the level of the distal femur, with focal mineralization and enlargement of the right semimembranosus muscle. Incisional biopsy suggested osteochondroma, osteochondrom…

BACKGROUND: Enchondroma, a subtype of chondroma, originates from the medullary cavity of the bone and produces an expansile growth pattern. Enchondroma located in the spine is rare and a few cases of large thoracic enchondroma have been reported. The authors document a rare case of large enchondroma in the thoracic spine of a 49-year-old woman, and discuss its clinical, radiological and histopathological characteristics.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient presented with rapidly progressive and severe pain on her upper back. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an expansile lesion at the posterior …

The Carney triad is the combination of gastric stromal sarcoma, pulmonary chondroma, and extra-adrenal paraganglioma. Herein, we describe the clinical, imaging, pathologic, and follow-up findings from 14 patients for a fourth component of the syndrome, adrenal adenoma. The adrenal neoplasm was asymptomatic and usually a late finding. Results of adrenocortical function tests were normal. Computed tomography revealed low-density adrenal masses that were consistent with adenomas. Bilateral lesions were present in 4 patients. In 13 of the 14 patients who underwent surgery, resected adrenal glands …

He came to us with a previous direct laryngoscopy derived biopsy describing a chondroma. A modified vertical partial laryngectomy, under temporary tracheostomy, with muscle reconstruction for the deficit of the right vocal cord was applied for the removal of the tumor. CASES: Two women presented with newly growing callosities beneath the first and second metatarsal heads, initially believed to reflect gastrocnemius tightness and plantar plate pathology. In another man, swelling at the posterolateral aspect of the heel was mistaken for a Haglund deformity. Subsequent imaging of each patient led to delayed diagnosis of extraskeletal osteochondroma (ESO). Surgical excision resolved symptoms in all 3 with no recurrence over 12 months later.
CONCLUSIONS: Whenever bony prominences newly develop in soft tissues of the foot, ESO should be suspected and appropriate …

INTRODUCTION: Enchondromas arise from cartilaginous cells derived from the physis that persists throughout development. They are difficult to diagnose and are often discovered on radiographs after a trauma.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We discuss the case of a 32-year-old woman with a pathologic mallet fracture of the distal phalanx that was initially misdiagnosed as common mallet fracture.
DIAGNOSIS: Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an eccentrically located lesion expanding to the cortex, with a high signal intensity at T2 weighted image, suggesting pathologic fracture.
INTERVENTIONS: We performed…

Enchondroma (EC) is a benign and cartilage-forming tumor that causes intramedullary lesions. Moreover, EC is the most common bone tumor in the phalanges and metacarpal bones of the hand, deforming the structure and causing pain and functional limitation. The management of this neoplasia is the surgical treatment and the approach that is well-accepted consists in the curettage followed by the void augmentation with biological or synthetic fillers. The results from surgery are usually good and the recurrence rate is low (2-15%). In this article we report a case of EC recurrence of the proximal p…

Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumour (ECMT) is a rare benign tumour which classically presents in the anterior tongue. This tumour is grossly under-reported due to lack of immunohistochemical staining in many centres. We report a 46-year-old man who presented with mass in the anterior tongue and was diagnosed with ECMT. Further management of this lesion is explained with a review of the literature.

UNLABELLED: The oral cavity is an uncommon site for a true lipoma. A distinct histological variant is chondrolipoma, which is a rare oral lesion. A case of chondrolipoma in a 71-year-old male is reported and histology and differential diagnosis are discussed.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: An oral lump is a common presenting complaint and requires further investigation.

Generalized enchondromatosis, of which Ollier disease is the most common type, is a rare bone dysplasia characterized by multiple intraosseous tumors near growth-plate cartilage. These cartilaginous tumors have a propensity to transform into chondrosarcomas. Enchondromas of the skull base are exceedingly rare. We present the case of a patient with generalized enchondromatosis who developed a large enchondroma of the clivus, and we discuss the clinical presentation and potential treatments for this entity.

Primary bone tumours are comparatively rare lesions. The diagnosis of these bone tumours as well as of tumour-like lesions is supported particularly by radiological investigations on the one hand and by the histological analysis of the tissue on the other. In addition to the traditional methods of radiography, intraosseous vessels can be demonstrated in vivo by the new method of intraosseous angiography. Intraosseous angiography shows the actual size of the tumour which sometimes cannot be seen by normal X-ray-appearance including peripheral angiography. Furthermore by intraosseous angiography
