The mechanism of extracellular traps (ETs) is important in the cellular response against bacteria. Thus, in the present study, we describe for the first time the capacity of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) microglia in the formation of ETs in Weissella cibaria in vitro infection. Thus, we evaluated the ultrastructure of the microglia culture and observed the formation of ETs 6 h after stimulation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and during the course of infection. Our results shed light on the mechanism of formation of ETs in the microglia of teleost fish and the ability of W. cibaria to

BACKGROUND: Body traits are generally controlled by several genes in vertebrates (i.e. polygenes), which in turn make them difficult to identify through association mapping. Increasing the power of association studies by combining approaches such as genotype imputation and multi-trait analysis improves the ability to detect quantitative trait loci associated with polygenic traits, such as body traits.
RESULTS: A multi-trait genome-wide association study (mtGWAS) was performed to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) and genes associated with body traits in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus

Tilapia lake virus (TiLV) is regarded as one of the most important pathogens in tilapia aquaculture worldwide. Despite this, little is known regarding disease pathogenesis and immune responses to infection. The main objective of this study was to investigate the tissue distribution, histopathological changes, and immune response of fish exposed to TiLV. Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) maintained at 25 ± 2 °C were challenged with TiLV via intragastric-gavage. At 0.5, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 days post-challenge (dpc), six fish per treatment were euthanized and subjected to complete necropsy.

This study was conducted to determine if diets supplemented with turmeric powder (Curcuma longa) affected the reversible sterilization of Pseudotropheus socolofi. Three experimental diets were formulated to contain 0%, 10%, and 14% turmeric powder. The fish (mean weight 13 g) were randomly divided into groups consisting of 1 male and 4 females for each aquarium and were kept together for 137 days. The control group was fed a diet without turmeric, while the others were fed diets with turmeric for the first 75 days. All groups were then fed the control diet from day 75 to 137. The results showe

Global warming is a threat across the world that leads to estimates of the upper thermal limits of ectothermic species. Increased water temperature up-regulates oxygen consumption and metabolic rates, and alters the physiological processes. In this study, we identified the critical thermal maxima (CTmax) and physiological responses under normoxia and hypoxia in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. CTmax was 41.25 °C under hypoxia and 44.50 °C under normoxia. Compared to normoxia, lower values of hemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cells (RBCs) were observed at the CTmax under hypoxia. In contrast, h

The presence of 2,4,6-Tribromophenol (TBP) in the environment increased the risk of exposure to aquatic organisms affecting the animal development or metabolism. The current study investigated the low, subchronic and trophic effect of TBP in both, male and female adult of Oreochromis niloticus. The fish were exposed to 0.5 or 50 ng g-1 of TBP every ten days for 70 days. Then, hepatosomatic (HSI) and gonadosomatic (GSI) indexes, erythrocyte parameters (hemoglobin content, nuclear morphology and morphometrical abnormalities), biochemical endpoints (glutathione S-Transferase and catalase activiti

Environmental pollutants affect fish species differently because their routes of exposure make them more critical to a specific group regarding foraging habits or food preferences. However, the association between local problems and environmental conditions makes a particular species more suitable for use in monitoring programs. Thus, this study compared muscle accumulation of metals (Al, Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ti and Zn) and toxicogenetic damage to three neotropical species from the Itapemirim River Basin (Brazil) with distinct foraging habits and feeding preferences: Geophagus brasiliensis (ben

The present investigation was performed to evaluate the efficiency of Zinc oxide (ZnO) as a fish feed additive in immunomodulation of Oreochromis niloticus. Fish were fed on ZnO nano-particles (nZnO) and conventional (ZnO) in two concentrations (30 and 60 mg/kg diet), in addition to the control fish which was fed on Zn free diet. After 6° days, the highest survival rate was recorded in the nZnO30 -supplemented group. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and antioxidant enzymes were improved in different dietary Zn supplementation, obviously in the nZnO30 -supplemented group, while the lowest a

Endosulfan (ES), a persistent organochlorine pesticide, is widely used despite its toxicity to non-target animals. Upon reaching water bodies, ES can cause negative effects on aquatic animals, including disruption of hormonal systems. However, the action of ES on fish reproductive axis has been hardly studied thus far. The aim of the present work was to assess the endocrine disruptive potential of endosulfan on the pituitary gonadotropins levels and on the testes function due to ES in the South American freshwater fish Cichlasoma dimerus, using in vitro and in vivo approaches. In vitro experim

Mercury (Hg) can be strongly accumulated and biomagnified along aquatic food chain, but the exposure pathway remains little studied. In this study, we quantified the uptake and elimination of both inorganic mercury [as Hg(II)] and methylmercury (as MeHg) in an important farmed freshwater fish, the tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, using (203)Hg radiotracer technique. The dissolved uptake rates of both mercury species increased linearly with Hg concentration (tested at ng/L levels), and the uptake rate constant of MeHg was 4 times higher than that of Hg(II). Dissolved uptake of mercury was highly

Reproduction in fish is modulated by several factors that include environmental and endocrine components. The aim of this study was to elucidate the effect of aquacultural stressors along the pituitary-testis axis in a continuously breeding cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus. The fish (35.05 ± 2.20 g) were divided into three groups (n = 10 in each group, n = 5 in each replicate), namely initial controls (euthanized on the day of initiation of experiment), time-matched controls (kept undisturbed), and stressed fish, which were subjected to different kinds of randomized aquacultural stressors

A new species of Ceratomyxa parasitizing the gall bladder of Cichla monoculus, an endemic cichlid fish from the Amazon basin in Brazil, is described using morphological and molecular data. In the bile, both immature and mature myxospores were found floating freely or inside elongated plasmodia: length 304 (196-402) μm and width 35.7 (18.3-55.1) μm. Mature spores were elongated and only slightly crescent-shaped in frontal view with a prominent sutural line between two valve cells, which had rounded ends. Measurements of formalin-fixed myxospores: length 6.3±0.6 (5.1-7.5) μm, thickness 41.2±2.9

It has been repeatedly shown earlier that some fish of a given batch reveal motion sickness (a kinetosis) at the transition from 1 g to microgravity. In the course of parabolic aircraft flight experiments, it has been demonstrated that kinetosis susceptibility is correlated with asymmetric inner ear otoliths (i.e., differently weighed statoliths on the right and the left side of the head) or with genetically predispositioned malformed cells within the sensory epithelia of the inner ear. Hitherto, the threshold of gravity perception for inducing kinetotic behavior as well as the relative import

Several studies have predicted that developing countries will be unable to afford fish meal as a primary aquafeed protein source in the future. This experiment evaluated the effect of replacing fish meal (FM) with poultry by-product meal (PBM), tomato pomace, and azolla growth, physiological, and histological parameters, besides their economic impact on Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). A total of 270 fish were randomly allocated to 6 groups (initial weight average was 12.08 g). The groups are as follows: a fish meal-based diet (Tc), a poultry by-products meal-based diet (Tp), a T. pomace-

Accumulation within fish tissues establishes these organisms as valuable bio-indicators for monitoring environmental health and potential food safety risks. This research represents the pioneer study investigating microplastic and trace metal accumulation within the muscle tissues of edible fish from the urban Veli-Akkulam lake in Thiruvananthapuram. The research evaluated the microplastics and concentration of trace metals such as Hg, Fe, Zn, Pb, Cr, Cu, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cd alongside malondialdehyde (MDA) content in the tissues of Oreochromis niloticus. To evaluate spatio-temporal variations a

Our study investigated the toxicological effects of aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3-NPs) and the potential protective role of dietary nano-curcumin (N-CUR) in juvenile Oreochromis niloticus (30.39 ± 0.05 g) under controlled experimental conditions. It was hypothesized that N-CUR could mitigate the adverse impacts of Al2O3-NPs on growth, biochemical, oxidative, and histopathological parameters. A total of 180 O. niloticus were divided into six groups: a control group, two N-CUR-supplemented diets (40 and 50 mg/kg), an Al2O3-NP-exposed group (10 mg/L), and two co-treated groups receiving bot

In intensive aquaculture, outbreaks of infectious diseases are increasing, which demand improved disease management. This study assessed the effects of dietary enrofloxacin (ENF) on Oreochromis niloticus at the recommended dose (10 mg) and overdose (30 mg/kg/day) for 5 days by using integrated biomarker response. The ENF-fed fish were observed for mortality, residue deposition, oxidative stress, plasma biochemistry, and histopathological anomalies. The withdrawal period and elimination half-life of ENF were estimated. The dosing groups experienced 0.67%-2.67% mortalities. An increase in glucos

Streptococcus agalactiae infection remains a major constraint on the productivity of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), a species of considerable economic importance in global aquaculture. Although selective breeding programs have successfully produced tilapia strains with enhanced resistance to this pathogen, the B cell-mediated immune mechanisms underlying this resistance remain unclear. In this study, we systematically investigated differences in IgM + B cell-mediated immune responses between S. agalactiae-resistant and -susceptible Nile tilapia. Transcriptomic analysis of splenic leukoc
