BACKGROUND: The penile urethra is a primary site of HIV acquisition in males, although little is known about the urethral determinants of HIV susceptibility. Inflammation at other genital sites enhances HIV risk, and studies suggest that some inflammatory urethral bacteria may be vaginally acquired. Here, we characterize the impact of sexual debut on the microbiome and immune milieu of the penile urethra in adolescent males from Rakai, Uganda.
METHODS: A cohort of 185 self-reported sexually naïve adolescent males from Rakai, Uganda were followed longitudinally for 3 years, with questionnaires

PURPOSE: We sought to review our experience with the postoperative use of ureteral stents with and without extraction strings in a large series of pediatric patients following robotic-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty (RALP).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All RALPs at our institution from 2012 to present were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with < 60 days of follow-up, preoperative nephrostomy tubes, and redo pyeloplasty were excluded. Statistical analysis was performed.
RESULTS: A total of 245 patients underwent RALP: 179 (73%) patients had ureteral stents with extraction strings (SWES) and 66

HIV prevention has evolved dramatically since the 1990s. The ABC trilogy (abstinence, be faithful, use a condom) has expanded to incorporate a range of biomedical prevention strategies, including voluntary medical male circumcision, pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis, and treatment-as-prevention, and to accommodate structural and combination prevention approaches. This study examines how young Africans from five epidemiologically and socio-culturally diverse countries (Swaziland, Kenya, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Senegal) made sense of the evolving prevention of sexual transmission of HIV betwe

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate evidence against male circumcision (MC).
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE and Cochrane databases.
RESULTS: Database searches retrieved 297 publications for inclusion. Bibliographies of these yielded 101 more. After evaluation we found: Claims that MC carries high risk were contradicted by low frequency of adverse events that were virtually all minor and easily treated with complete resolution. Claims that MC causes psychological harm were contradicted by studies finding no such harm. Claims that MC impairs sexual function and pleasure

BACKGROUND: Pediatric human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is still an important public health issue despite a decrease in global, national, and local seroprevalence rates.
DESIGN: A prospective, hospital-based study was conducted.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One-hundred and sixty children presenting for the first time to the hospital were studied. Each child had a detailed physical examination and initial double rapid HIV antibody tests. A virological confirmatory test was done for those aged less than 18 months of age with positive results. Mothers of HIV-infected children also had HIV

BACKGROUND: About one third of refugee and humanitarian entrants to Australia are women age 12-44 years. Pregnant women from refugee backgrounds may have been exposed to a range of medical and psychosocial issues that can impact maternal, fetal and neonatal health.
RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the key elements that characterise a best practice model of maternity care for women from refugee backgrounds? This paper outlines the findings of a project which aimed at developing such a model at a major maternity hospital in Brisbane, Australia.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: This multifaceted project in

Female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C) is a serious global public health problem, violating the basic human rights of girls and women. FGM/C is a form of child maltreatment. According to the World Health Organization 200 million girls and women have undergone FGM/C in thirty countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. FGM/C is also a concern in the United States (U.S.). Approximately 513,000 girls and women living in the U.S. are at risk for FGM/C or its consequences, representing a 4-fold increase within a decade. FGM/C places victims at risk for significant physical and psychologi

BACKGROUND: The conflicting evidence on the relationship between female genital mutilation/ cutting (FGM/C) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be due to the differences in the prevalence and type of FGM/C in different societies. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence and severity of PTSD and its associated factors among Iranian women with genital mutilation.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed on 155 women with genital mutilation aged 18-45 years referred to the health centers in Mahabad, located in west of Iran from October 2020 to April 2021. The participa

BACKGROUND: Complications of surgical clitoral reconstruction for female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) are a rare occurrence, but there has been reports of patients experiencing chronic pain or clitoral burial.
AIM: This study aims to assess which factors are predictive of the occurrence of surgical complications in women who had surgical reconstruction for FGM/C (type 1, 2, or 3).
METHODS: This monocentric retrospective study was conducted among patients who underwent clitoral reconstruction after FGM/C from January 2016 to March 2020. Demographic and clinical data were abstracted from

Around 200 million women and girls worldwide are affected by female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). FGM/C is a procedure that harms or alters the external female genitals for non-medical reasons, and is usually performed on children. Often, this procedure leads to severe consequences for the women's physical and mental health. In a cross-sectional sample of 112 women seeking medical counseling, physical and mental health characteristics associated with FGM/C were examined and possible predictors for the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in women affected by FGM/C were id

Sexual violence against children is a gross violation of children's rights during their formative years and will likely interfere with their developmental trajectory and long-term quality of life. As a result, this form of violence includes commercial sexual exploitation of children, sexual abuse, child marriages, and female genital mutilation. The evidence shows that violence prevention is worth the investment; however, prioritizing this agenda to ensure funding through government spending remains low. Despite funding realities, research and advocacy efforts need to continue, with a focus on

Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C or FGM) are injuries to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Every year, over 4 million girls are at risk of FGM. Complications of this practice are very common and some of them are still under investigation. The purpose of this short narrative review is to highlight and summarize the main ones. Psychologic and psychiatric sequelae, chronic vulvar pain, urogenital symptoms, pelvic organs prolapse, sexual disfunction, cervical dysplasia and infections resulted as chronic sequalae of FGM. Severe pain, excessive bleeding, and tissues swelling

OBJECTIVE: Worldwide, an estimated 125 million girls and women live with female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). We aimed to systematically review the evidence for physical health risks associated with FGM/C.
DESIGN: We searched 15 databases to identify studies (up to January 2012). Selection criteria were empirical studies reporting physical health outcomes from FGM/C, affecting females with any type of FGM/C, irrespective of ethnicity, nationality and age. Two review authors independently screened titles and abstracts, applied eligibility criteria, assessed methodological study quality a

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Evidence of the protective effect of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) against HIV is well established. However, evidence of the protective effect of VMMC against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has been inconsistent or scarce across different populations and settings. This review summarizes the current evidence on the effect of VMMC for HIV prevention on acquisition and transmission of other STIs in heterosexual men, women, and men who have sex with men (MSM).
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent findings continue to strongly support the protective effect of male

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to share our outcomes, including complications and their management, of a "modified" penile inversion vaginoplasty (PIV) technique applied to transgender individuals, which we presume to be the first reported case series of a single center from Turkey.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study, including adult transgender cases who underwent male to female gender-affirming surgery in our institution, between January 2015 and December 2019, was planned. The same "modified" PIV technique, in which the spatulated urethra was incorporated to the penile skin flap, was app
