Assessment of the validity and clinical utility of AUDIT-C versus RAPS-4 alcohol screeners among active-duty US Army soldiers.

BACKGROUND: High rates of alcohol-related problems have been reported among US service members (SMs). Screening questions on drinking and related behaviors can help identify individuals at-risk for alcohol-related problems. However, brief alcohol screeners, such as the alcohol use disorders identification test-consumption (AUDIT-C) and the 4-item rapid alcohol problems screening (RAPS-4), have not been adequately and concurrently validated among active-duty SMs. METHODS: From October to December 2021, 19,465 active-duty soldiers (including activated reserve soldiers) completed anonymous comma

Anaesthesia, surgery, and life-threatening allergic reactions: epidemiology and clinical features of perioperative anaphylaxis in the 6th National Audit Project (NAP6).

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis during anaesthesia is a serious complication for patients and anaesthetists. METHODS: The 6th National Audit Project (NAP6) on perioperative anaphylaxis collected and reviewed 266 reports of Grades 3-5 anaphylaxis over 1 yr from all NHS hospitals in the UK. RESULTS: The estimated incidence was ≈1:10 000 anaesthetics. Case exclusion because of reporting delays or incomplete data means true incidence might be ≈70% higher. The distribution of 199 identified culprit agents included antibiotics (94), neuromuscular blocking agents (65), chlorhexidine (18), and Patent Blue d

Variable Adherence to Australian Clinical Care Standard: An Audit of Patients With Acute Low Back Pain Attending a Tertiary Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) has the second highest burden of disease in Australia and is the 5th most common reason for attending an Emergency Department (ED). Variation in clinical care is linked to poorer outcomes and higher health care costs. In 2022, the Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Healthcare (ACSQHC) released the LBP Clinical Care Standard (LBP CCS). An audit was completed at a tertiary metropolitan hospital ED to benchmark the care of patients attending with LBP against the LBP CCS. METHODS: The medical notes of all adult patients with a diagnosis of LBP, attendi

Clinical registry metadata as a hidden bottleneck in AI-driven drug discovery: a computational audit of translational phase data in glioma research.

Clinical translation in glioma and glioblastoma remains inefficient despite advances in computational drug discovery. An underrecognized contributor to this gap is structural degradation of clinical registry metadata. We analyzed the complete set of 2.357 glioma-related clinical trial records available in the WHO ICTRP registry at the time of extraction (3 January 2026). A deterministic Python-based validation pipeline was developed to normalize phase and study-type annotations while distinguishing technical voids, methodological non-applicability, and structurally inconsistent entries. Two qu

Clinical audit of the use of tension-free vaginal tape as a surgical treatment for urinary stress incontinence, set against NICE guidelines.

Urinary incontinence affects a large proportion of adult women and is associated with considerable distress and social disability. In February 2003 the UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) published new clinical guidelines on the use of tension free vaginal tape (TVT) for surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence. Against these guidelines we have conducted a retrospective audit of patient care by the Oxford Radcliffe NHS Trust over 3 years, using the BFLUTS questionnaire in conjunction with patient records. This is believed to be the first such audit. Our results show o

Audit of clinical management of von Willebrand disease during 1997 at a single institution and review of treatment patterns between 1980 and 1997.

In 1997 the UK Haemophilia Centre Directors Organization published the guidelines for diagnosis and management of von Willebrand disease (vWD). The guidelines stated that desmopressin (DDAVP) should be used in type 1 and type 2N vWD, that it might be useful in other types 2 vWD and that it is ineffective in type 3 vWD. If patients are unresponsive to DDAVP or if it is contraindicated, the treatment of choice is clotting factor concentrates (CFC). In the light of these guidelines, we audited our practice for 1997. Furthermore, we undertook a retrospective review of the changing patterns of trea
