Predictions of different elements of everyday functional outcomes in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia: Cognition, social cognition, clinical symptoms, and mood states as predictors.

BACKGROUND: Disability is common in serious mental illnesses across employment, everyday activities, and social outcomes. Although cognition and social cognition are known to predict disability, the level of influence across elements of functioning and condition and is not certain. We examined the correlations between cognition and social cognition, measured with observer ratings and performance, with ratings of performance in employment, everyday activities, and social outcomes in a transdiagnostic sample. METHODS: Participants with bipolar disorder (BD; n = 114) and SZ (SZ; n = 126) were st…

Conversion between the Brief assessment of Impaired Cognition, Brief Assessment of Impaired Cognition Questionnaire, and Mini-Mental State Examination in a mixed clinical sample.

INTRODUCTION: The Brief Assessment of Impaired Cognition (BASIC), and the Brief Assessment of Impaired Cognition Questionnaire (BASIC-Q) are new case-finding tools for cognitive impairment and dementia which are increasingly being used in clinical settings as alternatives to the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The objective of this study was to develop bi-directional crosswalk tables for conversion between the three instruments for patients 60 years and older. METHODS: Patients from memory clinics and general practice ≥ 60 years of age who completed assessment with BASIC, BASIC-Q, and M…

Dysfunctional Cognition and Work-Related Outcomes: A Systematic Literature Review.

This systematic literature review synthesizes and integrates research on dysfunctional cognition (DC) in organizational settings, addressing the lack of a coherent model explaining how cognitive vulnerabilities shape work-related outcomes. Following the PRISMA guidelines, we analyzed 41 manuscripts (selected from more than 4523 initial and secondary search hits), leading to an integrative model of DC at work. Results show that DC is activated by job demands, alongside other demanding situational and contextual features. The model specifies maladaptive appraisal processes as the cognitive-affec…

Visual cognition: A cortical node for object-centered spatial attention.

Visual attention is often described as the selection of locations in retinal or body-centered space, yet behavior also requires selection within objects. A new study identifies posterior inferotemporal cortex as a ventro-temporal node for object-centered spatial representation.

Cerebellar contributions to action and cognition: Prediction, timescale, and continuity.

The cerebellum is implicated in nearly every domain of human cognition, yet our understanding of how this subcortical structure contributes to cognition remains elusive. Efforts on this front have tended to fall into one of two camps. On one side are those who seek to identify a universal cerebellar transform, a single algorithm that can be applied across domains as diverse as sensorimotor learning, social cognition, and decision-making. On the other side are those who focus on functional specializations tailored for different task domains. In this perspective, we propose an integrated approac…

Preface to the Special Issue "Astrocytes in Cognition and Behavior".

Astrocytes, once viewed as passive support cells in the central nervous system, are now recognized as active and dynamic regulators of neural function. Across multiple domains of central nervous system function, astrocytes interact closely with neurons to influence synaptic transmission, plasticity, and behavior. These include key brain and spinal cord functions related to information processing that impact cognition and animal behavior. This Special Issue features 12 comprehensive reviews and original data articles that highlight key advances and ongoing challenges in this field. These works …

Neuroinflammation-associated thalamocortical functional connectivity and cognition in older adults.

Neuroinflammation has detrimental neurocognitive effects in patients with systemic and neuropsychiatric diseases. Yet, outside of these conditions, it is unclear to what extent neuroinflammation modulates brain network-level function in older adults in the general population and, what, if any cognitive performance issues arise as a result. To evaluate these questions, we compared cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inflammatory cytokine levels, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, and cognitive performance data in 96 community-dwelling older adults (age ≥ 60 yrs). Principal component ana

[Mechanisms of High-Level Human Visual Cognition and Associated Disorders].

Human visual cognition relies on two major streams that originate in the primary visual cortex: the ventral stream, which projects to the temporal lobe, and the dorsal stream, which projects to the parietal lobe. The ventral stream processes visual features such as shape, color, and texture, which are integrated to support object recognition. Within this stream, cortical regions are further organized by stimulus categories, including faces, places, words, and objects. The dorsal stream links vision with action and spatial behavior and can be subdivided into two functional substreams. The dorso…

Temporal Quantum-like Cognition in a Free-Energy Variational Framework.

Free-energy-based variational principles provide a powerful framework for describing perception, inference, and decision making. The Free Energy Principle (FEP) is one prominent realization of this idea, but its standard formulation is usually expressed in terms of classical probabilistic generative models. Here, we propose an FEP-inspired, quantum-like variational approach by integrating Quantum State Over Time (QSOT), Schrödinger-bridge (SB) theory, and quantum logic into a unified framework. Cognitive evolution is formulated as the optimization of temporally extended quantum-like states und

Relationship-bound roles and role-filler independence in social cognition.

The target article proposes an evolutionarily old "institutional stance," where people make sense of others' behavior through roles independent of individuals. We argue that representations of such role-filler-independent roles are likely not primitives. We offer an alternative: relationship-bound role representations that encode particular individuals. Role-filler independence may instead be a cultural tool that addresses coordination challenges in large-scale groups.

Structure-function multilayer network integration and cognition in multiple sclerosis.

People with multiple sclerosis (MS) often present with cognitive deficits that cannot fully be attributed to focal brain alterations. Whole-brain network changes show stronger relations, but MS network insights have mostly focused on either structural or functional (single-layer) networks, while recent work has shown the importance of multilayer frontoparietal network integration for cognition. Here, we explored the cognitive relevance of multilayer integration of the frontoparietal network in relapsing-remitting MS (n = 780) using diffusion and resting-state fMRI. Cognitive relations were fir…

Outdoor Air Pollution, Perivascular Space Morphology, and Cognition in Preadolescence.

BACKGROUND: Ambient air pollution exposure is associated with structural brain differences and poorer cognition in children; however, mechanisms of toxicity remain unclear. Perivascular spaces (PVS), key for brain waste clearance, may play a role in the neurotoxicity of air pollution. This study explored associations between air pollution exposure, PVS morphology, and cognition in preadolescents. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional Adolescent Brain Cognitive DevelopmentSM (ABCD) Study® data from 6,949 9-10-year-old participants. Annual average exposures to PM2.5, O3, NO2, and 15 PM2.5 compon…

Relationship between cognitive reserve (education), social cognition and negative symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Negative symptoms (NS) are a core feature of schizophrenia spectrum disorders, yet their relationship with cognitive reserve (defined by educational attainment) and social cognition remains underexplored. Practical clinical measures highlight cognition-balance associations in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with balance deficits and fall risk. Despite this, cognition is not routinely assessed by rehabilitation professionals. Establishing associations between specific domains of balance and cognition in PD using practical clinical measures could help inform evaluation and intervention by clinicians. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is there a relationship between subsections of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Mini Balance Evaluation Systems Test (MiniBESTest) in people with PD that could inform clinical practi…

Societal Gender Norms and Their Influence on Late Life Cognition.

INTRODUCTION: This study assesses the influence of normative gender effects on cognitive outcomes of cognitively unimpaired older adults. The results help to understand how sex/gender identity operates as a structural determinant of AD outcomes and informs future research that is more inclusive of gender-diverse identities. METHODS: We analyze data from 216 adults aged 65 and older who completed survey questions from the Aging Gender Index (AGI), which pertain to often gendered experiences of American men and women, which relate to education, employment experiences, and relationship character
