Spatiotemporal neural dynamics of moral judgment: a high-density ERP study.

Morality is a pervasive aspect of human nature across all cultures, and neuroscience investigations are necessary for identifying what computational mechanisms underpin moral cognition. The current study used high-density ERPs to examine how moral evaluations are mediated by automatic and controlled processes as well as how quickly information and causal-intentional representations can be extracted when viewing morally laden behavior. The study also explored the extent to which individual dispositions in affective and cognitive empathy as well as justice sensitivity influence the encoding of m

Variables explaining functional recovery following motor stroke.

Few well-designed descriptive studies focus exclusively on patients after motor stroke. This study describes a cohort of participants after motor stroke and assesses the extent to which five key variables explain the variation in functional recovery 3 months after stroke. Prospective data were collected (N=100) on age, lesion volume, motor strength, cognition, and poststroke function during the acute care hospital admission. Instruments included magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to provide a measure of lesion volume, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Neurobehavioral Cognitive Sta

Methylphenidate as a causal test of translational and basic neural coding hypotheses.

Most systems neuroscience studies fall into one of two categories: basic science work aimed at understanding the relationship between neurons and behavior, or translational work aimed at developing treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders. Here we use these two approaches to inform and enhance each other. Our study both tests hypotheses about basic science neural coding principles and elucidates the neuronal mechanisms underlying clinically relevant behavioral effects of systemically administered methylphenidate (Ritalin). We discovered that orally administered methylphenidate, used clinicall

Combining TMS and fMRI: from 'virtual lesions' to functional-network accounts of cognition.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is increasingly used in Cognitive Neuroscience to study functional contributions of a stimulated brain region to cognitive and perceptual processing. TMS-related behavioural effects are often interpreted as reflecting selective disruption of processing primarily within the stimulated region itself. This approach is now being extended by studies that combine TMS with concurrent neuroimaging measures, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We discuss some recent combined TMS-fMRI studies and their implications for TMS investigations of cogni…

An open-source deep learning-based toolbox for automated auditory brainstem response analyses (ABRA).

Hearing loss is a pervasive global health challenge with profound impacts on communication, cognitive function, and quality of life. Recent studies have established age-related hearing loss as a significant risk factor for dementia, highlighting the importance of hearing loss research. Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), which are electrophysiological recordings of acoustically evoked synchronized neural activity from the auditory nerve and brainstem, serve as in vivo correlates for sensory hair cell and synaptic function, hearing sensitivity, and other critical readouts of auditory pathway p

How does your cortex grow?

Understanding human cortical maturation is a central goal for developmental neuroscience. Significant advances toward this goal have come from two recent strands of in vivo structural magnetic resonance imaging research: (1) longitudinal study designs have revealed that factors such as sex, cognitive ability, and disease are often better related to variations in the tempo of anatomical change than to variations in anatomy at any one time point; (2) largely cross-sectional applications of new surface-based morphometry (SBM) methods have shown how the traditional focus on cortical volume (CV) ca

Dynamic transitions of functional brain connectivity during a working memory task.

Working memory is a cognitive system that temporarily stores and manipulates information via attention. Although brain activity patterns related to working memory have been extensively studied, little is known about how the brain connectome organization dynamically changes while performing working memory tasks. Here, we systematically investigated dynamic changes in functional brain connectivity during a working memory task. We found that functional connectivity in the medial frontal and orbitofrontal cortices and the precuneus showed differences during the transitions between the rest and tas

Anger in psychological disorders: Prevalence, presentation, etiology and prognostic implications.

Anger is present as a key criterion in five diagnoses within DSM-5: Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar Disorder. This review amasses scientific literature demonstrating that within each of these disorders, anger is a central clinical feature that is highly prevalent and predictive of important outcomes. For each disorder, we also discuss the phenomenology and etiology of anger. Although models of anger have been quite distinct across these disorders, few empirical studies have truly

101 Dalmatians: a multimodal naturalistic fMRI dataset in typical development and congenital sensory loss.

In recent years, neuroscience has increasingly leveraged naturalistic stimuli, like movies and narratives, to investigate cognitive processes underlying real-world human behavior. Here, we present a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) dataset featuring 50 participants, with and without congenital sensory loss (typical development, congenitally blind and deaf individuals), who were exposed to audiovisual, auditory, or visual versions of the live-action movie 101 Dalmatians. The dataset incorporates auditory and visual descriptors from established computational models (e.g., VGGish, VGG

When does consciousness arise? A subcortical model of its origins.

The origin of consciousness constitutes one of the most enduring challenges in contemporary science, with implications for neuroscience, philosophy, medicine and ethics. Traditional accounts have emphasized the cerebral cortex as the seat of conscious awareness, largely due to its expansion and complexity in humans. However, converging evidence suggests that the foundations of consciousness lie not in higher cognition, but in more ancient subcortical systems responsible for affective experience. Central among these are the ascending arousal networks of the upper brainstem and the periaqueducta

An overview on central nervous system tuberculosis (CNS-TB) focusing on cognitive impairments.

One of the most serious clinical manifestations of tuberculosis (TB) is the central nervous system (CNS) presentation, which results in neurological disorders and cognitive impairments that may lead to reduced social skills. Few studies have assessed TB neuropsychological symptoms after infection. This review article investigated the incidence and spectrum of cognitive impairment related to complications in patients with CNS-TB and compiled data on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease. An extensive literature review was performed, and a total of 286 published studies we

Non-invasive transcranial electrical brain stimulation guided by functional near-infrared spectroscopy for targeted neuromodulation: a review.

One of the primary goals in cognitive neuroscience is to understand the neural mechanisms on which cognition is based. Researchers are trying to find how cognitive mechanisms are related to oscillations generated due to brain activity. The research focused on this topic has been considerably aided by developing non-invasive brain stimulation techniques. The dynamics of brain networks and the resultant behavior can be affected by non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, which make their use a focus of interest in many experiments and clinical fields. One essential non-invasive brain stimulati…

Closed-loop rehabilitation of age-related cognitive disorders.

Cognitive deficits are common in older adults, as a result of both the natural aging process and neurodegenerative disease. Although medical advancements have successfully prolonged the human lifespan, the challenge of remediating cognitive aging remains. The authors discuss the current state of cognitive therapeutic interventions and then present the need for development and validation of more powerful neurocognitive therapeutics. They propose that the next generation of interventions be implemented as closed-loop systems that target specific neural processing deficits, incorporate quantitati

The neuroscience of action semantics in neurodegenerative brain diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Within the last decade, the neurobiology of action processing has moved from an obscure topic of specialist interest to one of the most popular themes in modern neuroscience. However, the wealth of literature and the diversity of approaches and theoretical models can make the field complex and, at times, bewildering. This review presents the main currents of research, examining their theoretical underpinnings in an interdisciplinary context. RECENT FINDINGS: The presence of specific deficits in verb and action processing has been documented in a wide range of neurodegenerat

Peaks2Image: Reconstructing fMRI maps from stereotactic coordinates to enhance cognitive meta-analysis.

To integrate novel findings and reach a consensus on the neural correlates of cognitive functions, human neuroscientists have relied heavily on the literature to formulate, validate, or refine hypotheses. Since thousands of publications have reported the coordinates of regions identified in brain mapping, the community has largely performed meta-analyses based on these coordinates. A known problem with coordinate-based meta-analyses is that they rely on limited information from each publication, so terms appearing in few publications are not reliably mapped. Recently, the use of public images

Longitudinal cognitive assessment using the Cumulus NeuLogiq platform in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia.

People living with ALS (plwALS) and/or FTD (plwFTD) often experience cognitive and behavioural changes. However, detection can be confounded due to factors like fatigue and testing anxiety. Cumulus neuroscience developed NeuLogiq(R), a multi-modal neurocognitive platform that can be used in clinic or at home, providing an ecologically valid measure of cognition. This study examined the feasibility and usability of NeuLogiq in plwALS, plwFTD, and controls, and compared performance on gold standard neuropsychological assessments with corresponding NeuLogiq digital assessments. Over 8 months, plw
