Fingertip Reconstruction Using a Lateral Flap Based on the Distal Transverse Arch of the Digital Artery.

PURPOSE: Fingertip defect is more common in emergency hand trauma in the hospital, and most of them are accompanied by defects of the phalanx and nail bed. There are many methods in clinic for the repair of Yamano zone I fingertip injury. This article reports the repair of this type of injury using a lateral flap based on the distal transverse arch of the digital artery. METHODS: From January 2015 to May 2018, the flap was used in 32 digits of 32 patients who had a fingertip injury. There were 23 men and 9 women with a mean age of 37.6 years. The injured fingers requiring reconstruction inclu

Polyethylene glycol modified-albumin enhances the cold preservation properties of University of Wisconsin solution in rat liver and a hepatocyte cell line.

Liver grafts preserved in cold storage undergo changes mainly manifested by morphological modifications of the sinusoidal endothelium that result in poor graft function upon reperfusion. The present studies aimed to determine if the addition of polyethylene glycol-albumin to University of Wisconsin (Peg-AlbUW) solution ameliorates the cold preservation injuries of liver grafts. Rat livers were preserved cold with various preservation solutions and evaluated for weight changes and endothelial morphology. Solutions that preserved graft weight and endothelial morphology were tested in the isolate

Accelerated Frostbite-induced Acroosteolysis in Pediatric Insensate Hand: A Case Report and Literature Review.

In pediatric patients, frostbite is a well-documented cause of epiphyseal cartilage destruction and subsequent growth deformity of the affected phalanges. Cases of full acroosteolysis also referred to as phalangeal osteolysis, of distal phalanges as soon as 3 months after cold exposure have yet to be reported. We describe a complicated case of frostbite-associated phalangeal osteolysis in the dominant hand of a 9-year-old patient, in the context of post-traumatic insensate hand after sustaining prior electrical burn injuries. This case demonstrates the unique sequela of pediatric frostbite inj

Injuries in cross-country skiing. Trail markers for diagnosis and treatment.

Cross-country skiers can suffer acute injuries, such as sprains of the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb, the medial collateral ligament of the knee, and the ankle. They are also subject to overuse injuries, including arthritic changes in the great toe, and are at risk for cold-related injuries. Most of these injuries can be treated conservatively, and some can be avoided with adequate preparation and training.

Characterization of a Rabbit Model of Traumatic Hemorrhagic Shock Under High-Altitude Cold Conditions.

High-altitude hypoxia and cold often co-occur in traumatic hemorrhagic shock (THS), yet time-resolved models that quantify their interaction with blood loss are scarce. We established a composite-trauma THS model in New Zealand rabbits at ≈ 5,000 m equivalent altitude and 8 ± 2°C. Animals were randomized to six groups [HS (hemorrhagic shock); HS + COL (hemorrhagic shock + cold); HS+HYP (hemorrhagic shock + hypoxia); HS+HYP+COL (hemorrhagic shock + hypoxia + cold); Sham (normoxia, normothermia, no HS); HYP+COL (hypoxia + cold, no HS)]. Trauma comprised partial hepatectomy, total splenectomy, an

Anaphylaxis in Cold Induced Urticaria: A Case Report and Review of The Literature.

Cold-induced urticaria is considered as a subtype of physical urticaria and also the second most common type of chronic inducible urticaria. Contact with cold surfaces or the environment may cause systemic reactions, especially during aquatic activities. A 22-year-old female patient with a history of sulfa drug allergy began her condition 2 years before the presence of generalized pruritic erythema with hives as well as 2 episodes that had been characterized by facial angioedema and syncope 3-5 minutes after being in contact with cold air or surfaces.  On both events, she had just been outdoor

Alcohol and cold.

Alcohol is a dominant cause of death in urban hypothermia. Drinking alcohol gives a pleasant feeling of warmth. However, experimental studies on humans during relatively short exposure to moderate cold have given inconsistent results concerning heat balance. Longer exposure to colder environmental situations has, particularly with addition of strenous exercise, revealed enhanced heat loss. A warning must be given to drink alcohol beverages in connection with outdoor activities in a cold environment. It gives a feeling of bravery and influences judgement leading to ignoration of prophylactic me

Comparative analysis of cold curettage and coblation adenoidectomy: surgical and postoperative outcomes with 0° and 70° endoscopic techniques.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Adenoidectomy is a common pediatric otolaryngologic procedure. While cold curettage remains widely practiced, endoscopic coblation has been developed to enhance precision, minimize intraoperative complications, and reduce residual tissue. This study compared outcomes of conventional cold curettage adenoidectomy and coblation-assisted adenoidectomy in pediatric patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was designed as a prospective, comparative, non-randomized clinical study. A total of 128 children aged 3-11 years who underwent adenoidectomy were included. The cho

Keep Cool but Don't Freeze: The Influence of William J. Mills Jr. on the Treatment of Frostbite.

Dr William J. Mills Jr., an Alaskan orthopedic surgeon, helped establish the current protocols for frostbite treatment and changed a dogma u … d blood cells in warm water. Mills and his colleagues established a treatment protocol for freezing cold injury that included rapid warming in warm water. These studies resulted in the publication of three key papers in 1960 and 1961. These papers were the first clinical studies that described rapid warming as a treatment. Subsequently, rapid warming, with so …

Occurrence of cold sensitivity in carpal tunnel syndrome and its effects on surgical outcome following open carpal tunnel release.

Cold sensitivity is common following nerve injuries in the upper extremity, but is less well studied in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We investigated cold sensitivity in CTS and its effects on surgical outcome. A search of the Swedish National Registry for Hand Surgery (HAKIR) for open carpal tunnel releases (OCTR) from 2010-2016 identified 10,746 cases. Symptom severity questionnaires (HQ-8; HAKIR questionnaire 8, eight Likert-scale items scored 0-100, one item on cold sensitivity) and QuickDASH scores before and after surgery were collected. Patient mean age was 56 ± SD 16 years, and 7,150/1

Cold and hot fibrosis define clinically distinct cardiac pathologies.

Fibrosis remains a major unmet medical need. Simplifying principles are needed to better understand fibrosis and to yield new therapeutic approaches. Fibrosis is driven by myofibroblasts that interact with macrophages. A mathematical cell-circuit model predicts two types of fibrosis: hot fibrosis driven by macrophages and myofibroblasts and cold fibrosis driven by myofibroblasts alone. Testing these concepts in cardiac fibrosis resulting from myocardial infarction (MI) and heart failure (HF), we revealed that acute MI leads to cold fibrosis whereas chronic injury (HF) leads to hot fibrosis. MI

The Effects of Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor on Regeneration in Nerve Crush Injuries in Rats.

Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is widely known to have a neuroprotective effect, but its effects on function and morphology in mechanical nerve injury are not well understood. The aim of this study was to confirm the time course of the functional changes and morphological effects of G-CSF in a rat model of nerve crush injury. Twelve-eight rats were divided into three group: sham-operated control group, G-CSF-treated group, and saline treated group. 2 weeks after the nerve crush injury, G-CSF was injected for 5 days. After 4 weeks, functional tests such as motor nerve conduction

Cold Resection for Superficial Non-Ampullary Duodenal Epithelial Tumors: Current Evidence and Clinical Perspectives.

Superficial non-ampullary duodenal epithelial tumors (SNADETs) are increasingly treated with endoscopic resection. Although conventional thermal techniques are effective, the thin duodenal wall and distinctive anatomy have driven interest in cold resection techniques that avoid electrocautery-related injury. This narrative review individually appraises cold snare polypectomy (CSP), cold forceps polypectomy (CFP), and cold snare endoscopic mucosal resection (CS-EMR) for duodenal SNADETs. Management of selected small low-grade adenomas should be individualized, with careful surveillance consider

Intrathecal galanin alleviates allodynia-like behaviour in rats after partial peripheral nerve injury.

We have previously suggested that the neuropeptides galanin and galanin message-associated peptide (GMAP) may have an inhibitory role in spinal nociception. The present study examined the effects of intrathecal (i.t.) administration of these two peptides on allodynia-like behaviours in response to mechanical and cold stimulation in rats after photochemically induced ischaemic peripheral nerve injury. I.t. galanin significantly alleviated the mechanical- and cold-allodynia-like behaviours in nerve injured rats, and was not associated with motor impairment or sedation. I.t. GMAP relieved mechani

Age comparison of changes in local warm and cold sensitivity due to whole body cooling.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the influence of whole body cooling on local thermal sensitivity to warm (40°C) and cold (20°C) stimuli in … riggering different TRP channels. The findings reiterate the potential thermoregulatory risks (e.g. cold injury and hypothermia) associated with ageing, even with such short exposure times.

Effect of TGF-β1-Mediated Exercise Analgesia in Spared Nerve Injury Mice.

Peripheral nerve injury leads to severe neuropathic pain. Previous studies have highlighted the beneficial effects of physical exercise on alleviating neuropathic pain. Exercise regulating transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) can improve several diseases and relieve neuropathic pain induced by peripheral nerve injury. Here, we investigated whether exercise could alleviate neuropathic pain by modulating TGF-β1 expression. We assessed mechanical and cold pain behavior and conducted molecular evaluation of the spinal cord. We found that spared nerve injury (SNI) led to mechanical and cold allod

The trauma of the tundra tongue: an experimental and computational study of lingual tissue damage following adhesion to a cold metal lamp post.

BACKGROUND: Tissues can adhere to cold metal surfaces, causing tissue damage upon detachment. For children, this often involves the tongue, … ized with computer modelling. Nearly all experiments (92%) caused macroscopic, but not microscopic, cold injury, with risk increasing at lower metal temperatures. Computer simulations suggest that tissue damage is related to superficial tissue freezing that occurs under typical winter conditions and short exposure times. CONCLUSIONS: The tundra tongue is a c …

The Role of Cold-Inducible RNA-Binding Protein (CIRP) in Neurological Disorders.

Cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRP) is a critical molecule in the central nervous system (CNS) with functions that depend on its subcellular localization, exhibiting biphasic regulatory roles in both physiological and pathological processes. Under physiological conditions, intracellular cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (iCIRP) contributes to the maintenance of circadian rhythms by regulating the stability of core clock gene mRNAs and exerts neuroprotective effects during mild hypothermia by preserving the blood-brain barrier and inhibiting apoptosis. Pathologically, extracellular cold-
