Necrotizing Colitis with Perforation Proximal to Obstructive Ascending Colon Cancer: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing colitis (NC) with perforation is a rare complication of the obstructive cancer of the right colon. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report here a case of a 45-year-old female patient of mucinous adenocarcinoma of ascending colon, which presented as acute NC with perforation proximal to obstructing colonic carcinoma with their imaging features on computed tomography (CT). The purpose of this article is to highlight the role of CT in distinguishing an ischemic and a tumoral segment in the carcinomas complicated by proximal bowel ischemia. CONCLUSION: Imaging plays a great role in d

Highly aggressive neuroendocrine neoplasm of the ascending colon: a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms represent a broad group of uncommon tumours, comprising neuroendocrine tumours, mixed neuroendocrine non-endocrine neoplasms and neuroendocrine carcinomas. While most neuroendocrine neoplasms are well differentiated and exhibit indolent disease biology with excellent treatment response, neuroendocrine carcinomas represent a rare subtype with much more aggressive tumour behaviour, minimal response to adjuvant therapy and extremely poor prognosis. Herein, we report the case of a 47-year-old man who presented with a phlegmonous ascending colonic mass and associated calcif

[A Case of Laparoscopic Ileocecal Resection for Ascending Colon Cancer with Portosystemic Shunt].

A 72-year-old woman who underwent colorectal endoscopy because of positive fecal occult blood test results was diagnosed with ascending colon cancer.Preoperative CT revealed advanced ascending colon cancer and portosystemic shunt between the ileocecal vein and inferior vena cava.It was necessary to cut the shunt when ileocecal resection was performed. The patient had no symptoms caused by the shunt, and blood examination results showed no liver enzyme abnormalities. Abdominal ultrasound examination revealed no liver cirrhosis and normal blood flow in the portal vein and shunt flow from the ile

Retroflexion, a costless endoscopic maneuver, increases adenoma detection rate in the ascending colon.

BACKGROUND: Missed polyps during colonoscopy are considered an important factor for interval cancer appearance, especially in the ascending colon (AC). We evaluated the contribution of retroflexion to polyp and adenoma detection in the AC. METHODS: This prospective observational study included consecutive patients who underwent a complete colonoscopy between 06/2017 and 06/2018. The AC was examined in 2 phases: the first included 2 forward views from the hepatic flexure to the cecum; the second involved a retroflexion in the cecum, inspection up to the hepatic flexure and reinsertion to the c

Biopsies From Ascending and Descending Colon Are Sufficient for Diagnosis of Microscopic Colitis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Lymphocytic and collagenous colitis are types of microscopic colitis (MC) that commonly cause chronic watery diarrhea, but there are no macroscopic features of MC that can be detected during colonoscopy. Endoscopists therefore often collect multiple random colonic biopsies, potentially oversampling, increasing times of colonoscopy and slide review. We sought to identify sites from which biopsies could be taken and analyzed to identify patients with MC with a high level of sensitivity and determine the appropriate number of biopsies to take at these sites. METHODS: We perfor

[Successful Treatment of Necrotizing Fasciitis Due to Ascending Colon Cancer-A Case Report].

A 70-year-old woman was brought to our hospital by ambulance because of severe groin pain on the right side. Computed tomography scan revealed a tumor in the ascending colon, intraperitoneal abscess spread to the subcutaneous tissues, and a large amount of pneumoderma. She was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis caused by penetration of ascending colon cancer and underwent lavage and drainage, right hemicolectomy, end ileostomy, and debridement of necrotic tissues on emergency. Postoperatively, she underwent debridement and irrigation at the bedside every day, but the necrotizing tissues spre

[A Case of Ascending Colon Cancer with Intestinal Malformation Treated via Laparoscopic Surgery].

A 66-year-old man attended a health check-up after a positive fecal occult blood test. Colonoscopy revealed a 2 cm type 2 lesion near the ascending colon and the upper lip ofBauhin 's valve. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography ofthe abdominal region revealed aplasia ofthe ligament ofTreitz, with the duodenum running through the center. Three-dimensional vascular construction revealed intestinal malrotation, in which the superior mesenteric artery was present on the right side of the superior mesenteric vein. A diagnosis ofascending colon cancer(T2N0M0, cStage I )was made, and a laparoscopic

Clinicopathological features of an ascending colon mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma with clinical serosal invasion.

Mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma (MANEC) is exceedingly rare with a poor outcome. In this article, we reported a MANEC in a 68-year-old woman with a symptom of abdominal pain and distension. MANEC derived from the ascending colon with highly aggressive behavior. The diagnosis and distinguish of MANEC must base on histological findings and immunohistochemical findings. In this case, microscopic observation showed tumor cells were arranged in conglobate and nested by fibrous tissue with a visible cell atypia and mitotic. NEC-like and exocrine glandular cells were also been seen in a single ne

[Curative dissection of paraaortic lymph node metastases after operation for ascending colon cancer].

In October 2007, a 69-year-old woman underwent right hemicolectomy and D3 lymph node dissection for the treatment of adenocarcinoma (type 2, por2]tub2, pSS, pN3, fStage IIIb). Serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) concentration was 152.8 ng/mL preoperation, but returned to normal after the operation. Adjuvant chemotherapy using 450 mg/day UFT-E was added. Computed tomography (CT) examination revealed a swollen paraaortic lymph node 3 months after the operation, while serum CEA concentration had increased to 92.7 ng/mL. After the chemotherapy was changed to FOLFOX, the paraaortic lymph node shra

Abdominal wall and thigh abscess resulting from the penetration of ascending colon cancer.

An unusual case is described in which an abdominal wall and thigh abscess was an initial symptom of ascending colon cancer. A 76-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for investigation of fever and abdominal and thigh swelling. Computed tomography revealed a right abdominal wall, retroperitoneal, psoas and thigh abscess formation suspected to be caused by colon perforation. Due to the patient's poor general condition, local drainage of the abscess was performed on the following day of hospitalization. Histological examination of necrotic tissues removed form the retroperitoneal cavity de

Pharmacological characterization of cholecystokinin receptors mediating contraction of human gallbladder and ascending colon.

Cholecystokinin (CCK) produces contractions of gallbladder and colon in a number of different species. Although the effects of CCK on the human gallbladder are relatively well documented, the CCK receptors in the human colon have not been clearly characterised. Therefore, in this study, the CCK receptors in the human gallbladder and colon were compared using pharmacological techniques. Contraction of specimens of the human tissue was measured using in vitro organ bath bioassay. The effect of selective concentrations of CCK(1) and CCK(2) receptor antagonists (L-364,718 and JB93182, respectively

Morphologic changes of the ascending colon during experimental ischemia and reperfusion in ponies.

The morphologic changes following ascending colon volvulus result from the interaction of inflammatory and coagulation mediators. The objective of this study was to establish a quantifiable histopathologic scoring system to evaluate the serial pathomorphologic changes during ischemia and reperfusion. Such a scoring system could then be applied to subsequent studies designed to attenuate bowel lesions by regulating activity of individual mediators. Ten normal, healthy adult ponies were randomly divided into two equal groups. Following anesthesia and a 30-minute stabilization period, the colon o

Microvascular permeability changes in ischemia/reperfusion injury in the ascending colon of horses.

The normal microvascular permeability of the ascending colon in horses and the microvascular permeability of that segment after ischemia and reperfusion were investigated. Microvascular permeability was estimated by the ratio of lymphatic protein to plasma protein concentration (Cl/Cp) at high lymph flow rates in 8 adult horses in 2 equal groups: normal and ischemic (2-hour period). Lymphatic flow rates and lymph and plasma protein concentrations were determined. Intestinal biopsy specimens were obtained at the end of each experiment. Flow independent values were selected and compared by one-w

Distribution of myelinated nerves in ascending nerves and myenteric plexus of cat colon.

The parts of the colon differ in motor function and in responses to extrinsic and intrinsic nerve stimulation. The distribution of myelinated nerve fibers in the colonic myenteric plexus is not known. Because these fibers might be largely extrinsic in origin, their distribution might indicate the domain of influence of extrinsic nerves and help to explain the different behaviors of the different parts of the colon. Myelinated fibers were examined by electron microscopy in cross sections of the ascending nerves and in myelin-stained whole-mount preparations in the colon. The ascending nerves ar
