Effects of an oral exercise intervention on pre-frailty or frailty in older people: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is often experienced by older adults, which can lead to long-term health problems. We aimed to examine associations with improvements in nutritional status, sarcopenia (age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength), and frailty in four groups with different oral exercise frequencies. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, parallel multi-arm randomized controlled trial (Japan Registry of Clinical Trials (jRCT) 1062210063) to test the effects of oral exercise on frailty in older adults. Each intervention consisted of a standardized oral exercise protocol including nec

Mobile Imaging-Based Machine Learning for Dental Caries, Sealants, and Fluorosis: Protocol for a Cross-Sectional Model Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Assessing dental caries, sealants, and fluorosis is essential for public health surveillance, providing critical data to evaluate national prevention programs. Standard methods performed by dental professionals are often limited by affordability, accessibility, and scalability for both population-level and individualized assessments. Mobile health (mHealth) approaches to concurrently detect caries, sealants, and fluorosis have remained largely unexplored, especially at the population level. OBJECTIVE: This study leverages mHealth technologies that integrate computer vision using m

Dental fluorosis: chemistry and biology.

This review aims at discussing the pathogenesis of enamel fluorosis in relation to a putative linkage among ameloblastic activities, secreted enamel matrix proteins and multiple proteases, growing enamel crystals, and fluid composition, including calcium and fluoride ions. Fluoride is the most important caries-preventive agent in dentistry. In the last two decades, increasing fluoride exposure in various forms and vehicles is most likely the explanation for an increase in the prevalence of mild-to-moderate forms of dental fluorosis in many communities, not the least in those in which controlle

Sedation of children undergoing dental treatment.

BACKGROUND: Children's fear about dental treatment may lead to behaviour management problems for the dentist, which can be a barrier to the successful dental treatment of children. Sedation can be used to relieve anxiety and manage behaviour in children undergoing dental treatment. There is a need to determine from published research which agents, dosages and regimens are effective. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and relative efficacy of conscious sedation agents and dosages for behaviour management in paediatric dentistry. SEARCH METHODS: Electronic searches of MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochra

Anatomy of the sural nerve complex: Unaccounted anatomic variations and morphometric data.

BACKGROUND: The sural nerve (SN) is a cutaneous sensory nerve innervating the posterolateral leg. The SN is formed from a highly variable set of contributing nerves called the sural nerve complex (SNC). The SNC is made up of the lateral sural cutaneous nerve, medial sural cutaneous nerve, sural communicating branch, and SN. The SN is frequently cited as the most common donor nerve graft and is commonly injured in procedures of the lower extremity. Recent meta-analysis standardized six morphologies of the SNC and established a required reporting criterion for the group of nerves forming the SN.

Knowledge Acquisition, Case Discussion, and Engagement in Health Professional Students Using Interactive Virtual Patient Cases Versus Written Case Studies: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Effective pain and opioid management education remains a persistent challenge in health professions training. Static case studies and lecture-based instruction are widely used but may be insufficient to develop the clinical reasoning and communication skills required in practice. Interactive virtual patient simulations, including those powered by large language models, offer scalable alternatives, but head-to-head comparisons of interactive and static case formats using identical content among interprofessional learner populations remain limited. OBJECTIVE: This randomized control

Impact of medical school on quality of life and mental health in Brazil: a cross-sectional comparative study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the perceptions of quality of life (QoL) and mental health among medical students and their peers in other university courses in Brazil through a cross-sectional analysis. We hypothesised that medical students face greater psychological challenges due to the demanding nature of their academic workload. Previous studies have indicated that medical training is associated with a decline in empathy and an increase in stress and anxiety, particularly during the clinical phase, when students face greater exposure to patient care and emotionally demanding exper

Predictive values derived from lower wisdom teeth developmental stages on orthopantomograms to calculate the chronological age in adolescence and young adults as a prerequisite to obtain age-adjusted informed patient consent prior to elective surgical procedures in young patients with incomplete or mismatched personal data.

Introduction: Surgical procedures require informed patient consent, which is mandatory prior to any procedure. These requirements apply in particular to elective surgical procedures. The communication with the patient about the procedure has to be comprehensive and based on mutual understanding. Furthermore, the informed consent has to take into account whether a patient is of legal age. As a result of large-scale migration, there are eventually patients planned for medical procedures, whose chronological age can't be assessed reliably by physical inspection alone. Age determination based on a

Do Temporal Changes in Complete Tooth Loss Point to Cohort Effects?

OBJECTIVES: Complete tooth loss is more common among older adults; however, its prevalence has declined significantly over time. It is currently unknown whether age and period effects act independently or whether they interact to produce differential effects by birth cohorts. This study aimed to examine temporal changes in the prevalence of complete tooth loss in Australia, examine the effects of age, period and cohort and assess life course changes within birth cohorts. METHODS: The study used data from three repeated cross-sectional waves of Australia's National Dental Telephone Interview S

Achieving Universal Health Coverage for Oral Health by 2030 in Armed Conflict-Affected Settings: Challenges and Pathways.

BACKGROUND: In 2025, over 110 armed conflicts were reported globally, affecting an estimated two billion people. Oral health remains critically neglected in conflict-affected settings, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where it is deprioritised amid competing health demands. Despite commitments made at the 2024 WHO Global Oral Health Meeting and through the Bangkok Declaration, existing policy frameworks insufficiently address the challenges of achieving universal health coverage (UHC) for oral health in these contexts. AIMS: To examine the systemic barriers to impleme

Implementation of Child Healthy Weight Guidelines in the Dental Setting: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: There has been an increasing prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity worldwide and locally, with a quarter of Australian children now considered overweight. To address this, the New South Wales government in Australia released guidelines calling for all public dental services to identify children above a healthy weight and refer them to appropriate services. This study was part of a larger study that aimed to codesign and pilot implementation strategies to facilitate the translation of these guidelines into dental staff's practice. METHODS: A pre-post-test design was used t
