The purpose of this study was to explore the transitional support received from the Department of Corrections during the reentry period. METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews with 20 HIV-infected formerly incarcerated individual

Struggling with long-time low uptake of modern contraceptives in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Efforts to expand access to reproductive health care in Pakistan date as far back as the early 1950s. Despite such efforts, the fertility rate has declined at a slower pace compared to that in neighbouring countries. AIMS: To explore the underlying reasons and challenges for long-time low contraceptive use among female clients and key service providers of community-based family planning programmes in Pakistan. METHODS: A qualitative study was carried out with a total of 10 focus group discussions and 7 in-depth interviews with female clients and key service providers. The data we

Patient satisfaction with oral health check-ups at a community pharmacy and their effect on oral self-care habits and dental consultation behavior.

Maintaining good oral health is important because oral diseases are related to systemic diseases, and community pharmacies play a key role in maintaining the health of local residents. This study aimed to examine the effects of oral health check-ups and information provision at community pharmacies on oral health-associated behaviors as well as patient satisfaction. We conducted oral health check-ups and provided information about oral health self-care to 84 patients at a community pharmacy, and then asked them to complete a questionnaire survey. One month later, we sent them a follow-up quest

Health outcomes of incarcerated pregnant women and their infants in a community-based program.

An experimental, community-based, residential program, focused on health promotion, was established in 1990 for incarcerated pregnant women with short-term sentences and histories of drug abuse in a large, midwestern metropolitan area in the United States. Infants resided with mothers after birth. Prenatal care, delivery, postpartum, and family-planning services were initiated and provided by a nurse-midwifery service. Community-based health care, job training, and drug rehabilitation were provided for women during pregnancy through the fourth postpartum month. Program participants' prenatal,

Referral Practices Among U.S. Publicly Funded Health Centers That Offer Family Planning Services.

BACKGROUND: Referrals to other medical services are central to healthcare, including family planning service providers; however, little information exists on the nature of referral practices among health centers that offer family planning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used a nationally representative survey of administrators from 1,615 publicly funded health centers that offered family planning in 2013-14 to describe the use of six referral practices. We focused on associations between various health center characteristics and frequent use of three active referral practices. RESULTS: In the pri

U.S. Funding Cuts and Health System Challenges in Community-Based HIV Programmes in Rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: A Qualitative Study.

Community-based organisations (CBOs) play a critical role in implementing HIV programmes, many of which have historically relied on United States (U.S.) donor funding. Recent U.S. funding cuts have disrupted community-based HIV programmes, underscoring the need to understand implementers' experiences to support sustainable service delivery. This study explored how funding instability affected community-based HIV programmes in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. A qualitative, exploratory design was employed using interviews and focus group discussions with purposively selected youth frontline w

Improving safe post-abortion care practices: A study on interventions implemented by Ipas Pakistan.

An estimated 50 million induced abortions occur in developing countries annually, and an estimated 7 million women are treated for complications associated with unsafe abortions. According to a 2012 estimate, 15 per 1,000 women aged 15-49 years seek treatment for abortion-related health complications in both private and public sectors. A high unmet need for family planning in Pakistan and a low percentage of women adopting a contraceptive method in the post-partum period led to unwanted pregnancy becoming one of the reasons for unsafe abortion. Post-abortion care (PAC) is an integrated service

Applying community health systems lenses to identify determinants of access to surgery among mobile & migrant populations with hydrocele in Zambia: A mixed methods assessment.

Hydrocele which is caused by long term lymphatic filariasis infection can be treated through the provision of surgery. Access to surgeries remains low particularly for hard to reach populations. A concurrent mixed methods design consisting of cross-sectional survey with hydrocele patients (n = 438) and in-depth interviews with different community actors (n = 38) was conducted in October
