OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of a community-based multisectoral intervention aimed at optimizing the use of local resources on the quality of life (QoL), perceived social support, and health status of individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) and their family caregivers.
METHODS: A randomized pre-post intervention study was conducted across six primary healthcare centers. The intervention comprised three monthly informational sessions over a three-month period, targeting both patients and caregivers, focused on raising awareness of available community resources and services. Outcome meas

Community-based organizations (CBOs) played a key role in providing health and safety net support to low-income Latino communities during the COVID-19 pandemic; yet we know little about how organizations navigated challenges during this time. Understanding how CBOs navigate challenging periods is critical to ensuring a robust safety net for Latino and other underserved populations. We examined the factors that allowed CBOs to address Latino communities' needs and the potential long-term impact of the pandemic on the sustainability of their health programs. Using a case study approach, we condu

BACKGROUND: Research has increasingly explored maternal resilience or protective factors that enable women to achieve healthier maternal and child outcomes. However, it has not adequately examined maternal resilience using a culturally-relevant, socio-ecological lens or how it may be influenced by early-life stressors and resources. The current study contributes to the literature on maternal resilience by qualitatively exploring the salient multi-level stressors and resources experienced over the lifecourse by predominantly low-income and minoritized women.
PROCEDURES: Data are from 19 women

ObjectiveDespite growing recognition that congenital craniofacial conditions have lifelong implications, psychological support for adults is currently lacking. The aim of this project was to produce a series of short films about living with craniosynostosis in adulthood, alongside a psychoeducational booklet.DesignThe resources were developed using multiple focus groups and meetings attended by researchers, patient representatives, a leading charitable organisation, an award-winning film production company, clinicians, and other experts in the field.ResultsAn online mixed-methods survey was de

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and exposure to community violence are public health issues linked to negative mental and physical health outcomes. The emergency department (ED) can play a critical role in the care of patients with a history of trauma exposure. Unfortunately, patients' experiences often go unidentified, leading to missed opportunities to address and prevent further harm.
METHODS: We administered a 22-question survey of trauma exposure in ED patients to 1) identify the prevalence of exposure to community violence and ACEs and resulting post-traumatic stress

Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension, diabetes, sickle cell disease, and rheumatic heart disease, pose significant health burdens in low-income countries, not the least rural Tanzania, exacerbated by limited healthcare infrastructure, human and financial resources. This paper reports the perspectives of key stakeholders on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges (SWOC) in managing and preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in rural districts of Tanzania, prior to the implementation of the WHO PEN Plus model. Using qualitative methods through in-depth int

BACKGROUND: Mobility restrictions-trade and travel bans, border closures and, in extreme cases, area quarantines or cordons sanitaires-are among the most widely used measures to control infectious diseases. Restrictions of this kind were important in the response to epidemics of SARS (2003), H1N1 influenza (2009), Ebola (2014) and, currently in the containment of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, they do not always work as expected.
METHODS: To determine when mobility restrictions reduce the size of an epidemic, we use a model of disease transmission within and between economically hete

Recovery from alcohol and drug problems is a process of change through which an individual achieves control and improved quality of life. Recovery is a primary goal for individuals with substance use disorder as it provides hope that treatment and overall health are possible for every individual. More than 23 million Americans are in recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs.Recovery-oriented systems of care (ROSC) are networks of community services and peer support that help individuals and families achieve recovery from substances and improve overall health. ROSC is a strengths-base

The ongoing shortage of oncology drugs, particularly generic chemotherapies like platinum agents, has had a disproportionate impact on community and safety net hospitals in the United States and globally. These institutions, often serving rural and underserved populations, face significant challenges due to limited financial resources. This article examines the practical implications of these shortages through the lens of a community hospital, where creative solutions were employed to maximize limited resources where drug shortages were concerned. This article also highlights the emergence of

INTRODUCTION: Primary healthcare, through community-based care provision, is a pathway to achieving universal health coverage (UHC). Ghana adopted the Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) initiative as a national health strategy to drive UHC. Challenges with the national scale-up led to strengthening CHPS in the Upper East Region through the Ghana Essential Health Interventions Programme (GEHIP). Subsequently, CHPS+ was implemented to further strengthen CHPS and sustain the gains of GEHIP. CHPS+ adopted a peer learning implementation strategy through health personnel visits to U

BACKGROUND: Participatory action research (PAR) methods effectively engage communities in identifying health priorities in low-resource settings. This study applied PAR methods during the establishment of a Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India.
METHODS: We implemented seven PAR methods across rural and urban populations: transect walks, resource mapping, social mapping, seasonal mapping, focus group discussions, semi-structured interviews, and community ranking exercises. Data were collected in September 2023 following facilitator training. Visu

This article examines the social justice issues resulting from the uneven distribution of resources. In this article, justice theories are discussed in relation to two of these issues: lack of adequate food and shelter and inequitable access to an appropriate continuum of health care. Public health nurses have the obligation to deal with the results of poverty and the uneven distribution of resources, which pose a threat to the common good in the United States and throughout the global community.

Before the advent of the National Health Service in 1948 most hospital doctors were in close contact with the primary care of, at least, a section of the community both by their continuing close contacts with general practitioners and as a result of often having spent some part of their careers as general practitioners. Since 1948 this awareness of the health aspirations of the community has weakened as a result of advances in the care of disease which have made the hospital doctor increasingly dependent on sophisticated facilities and, thus, focused his attention on hospital care rather than

Due to factors such as medical resources, public awareness, funding for general screening, or optimized screening models, community-based screening is far from meeting the demand. Artificial intelligence (AI) can replace some of the medical work and combine it with the "Internet+" model to transfer medical resources to improve accessibility and availability. However, the application of AI technology to community-based screening still faces many challenges, such as most AI products cannot be directly applied to community-based screening, the inability to integrate multimodal information such as

A family's heritage and values have profound bearing on the stressors they encounter and how they cope. Socioeconomic change, natural and man-made disasters, and international migration are major influences on the integrity of society. In these times of global financial crisis, communities around the world are in danger of losing their intrinsic structure and protective factors. Connectedness or attachment to family and culture of origin correlate with reduced risk-taking behaviors and a reduction in family and societal violence, posttraumatic stress, addiction, depression, suicidality, sexual

Lymphorrhoea-otherwise known as 'wet' or 'leaky' legs-is an increasingly common condition that many community nurses will encounter in their daily practice; however, until relatively recently, evidence-based literature on its management was limited, and treatment modalities only tackled the symptoms instead of addressing the cause. In this article, Francesca Ramadan highlights the devastating impact of this condition, and the resources available to community practitioners to assist their patients to live well with lymphoedema.
