Clinical evaluation of a computer-assisted decision support and documentation system for the primary care of polytrauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Polytrauma management demands rapid, high-stakes decisions under severe time pressure, increasing the risk of error and deviation from evidence-based protocols. Computer-assisted decision support systems (CDSS) may counter these risks by improving adherence to guidelines and reducing cognitive strain. We developed TraumaFlow, a CDSS integrating the German S3 guideline and ATLS® principles, and evaluated its impact in real-world trauma care. METHODS: In a prospective study at a level 1 trauma center, 30 shock room cases were managed with TraumaFlow alongside the standard paper prot

SolenopsisDetector: development of an automatic detection system for fire ants using computer vision and deep learning.

Fire ants (Solenopsis spp. Westwood) pose a major ecological and economic threat, mainly due to the invasive potential of certain species. Current identification methods are highly dependent on taxonomic expertise, which can slow down decision-making. The development of an automated detection system could therefore support the identification process. We present SolenopsisDetector (SolenopD), an automated system for identifying Solenopsis ants using computer vision and deep learning. Following taxonomic practice, which emphasizes diagnostic body segments (head, thorax, abdomen), we evaluated 2

Portable Cone-Beam Computed Tomography System for Intraoperative Localization of Pulmonary Nodules: An Initial Experience.

OBJECTIVES: Advances in imaging have expanded options for diagnosis and therapy, including wedge resection of small pulmonary nodules. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) can substitute for hybrid operating rooms (ORs) to identify impalpable nodules. We report the initial clinical use of a portable CBCT system (Cios Spin, Siemens, Germany) for intraoperative localization of small pulmonary nodules. METHODS: Four patients (3 men, 1 woman; mean age, 68.3 years) with peripheral nodules were included. Under general anaesthesia, an initial pre-scan confirmed that the lesion was within the field o

Impact of an Artificial Intelligence-Based Computer Aided Detection System (CADe) on Colonoscopies Performed in Hawai'i.

The demand for colonoscopies has increased over the last few years due to an aging population combined with a post COVID-19 backlog as well as an ongoing rise in younger patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). Quality indicators ensure that high quality colonoscopies are being performed by endoscopists, thus decreasing the risk of post-colonoscopy CRC arising from lesions missed on the index exam. One common outcome measure is known as the adenoma detection rate (ADR), which is the likelihood that an endoscopist will detect a pre-cancerous polyp during colonoscopy. The Artificial Intelligence (

New insights into translational research in Alzheimer's disease guided by artificial intelligence, computational and systems biology.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by cognitive and functional deterioration, with pathological features such as amyloid-beta (Aβ) aggregates in the extracellular spaces of parenchymal neurons and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles formed by the hyperphosphorylation of tau protein. Despite a thorough investigation, current treatments targeting the reduction of Aβ production, promotion of its clearance, and inhibition of tau protein phosphorylation and aggregation have not met clinical expectations, posing a substantial obstacle in the development of drugs for AD. Recently, artificial

Reinforcement learning for closed-loop regulation of cardiovascular system with vagus nerve stimulation: a computational study.

Objective. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is being investigated as a potential therapy for cardiovascular diseases including heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia, and hypertension. The lack of a systematic approach for controlling and tuning the VNS parameters poses a significant challenge. Closed-loop VNS strategies combined with artificial intelligence (AI) approaches offer a framework for systematically learning and adapting the optimal stimulation parameters. In this study, we presented an interactive AI framework using reinforcement learning (RL) for automated data-driven design of closed-loo

Mixing neural networks, continuation and symbolic computation to solve parametric systems of non linear equations.

We consider a square non linear parametric equations system F(P,X) = 0 which is constituted of n non differential equations in the n unknowns {x1,…,xn} that are the components of X while P={p1,…,pm} is a set of m parameters that play a role in the definition of the equations F. We assume that P is restricted to lie in a bounded region and we are interested in developing a solver for obtaining all real solutions exactly (a notion that is defined in the paper) for any parameter values within the bounded region. The starting point of the proposed approach is that we assume that a numerical method

Computer model of non-Newtonian canalicular fluid flow in lacunar-canalicular system of bone tissue.

Brittle bone diseases are a global healthcare problem for orthopaedic clinicians, that reduces bone strength and promotes bone fracture risk. In vivo studies reported that loading-induced fluid flow through the lacunar-canalicular channel (LCS) of bone tissue inhibit such bone loss and encourages osteogenesis i.e. new bone formation. Canalicular fluid flow converts mechanical signals into biological signals and regulates bone reconstruction by releasing signalling molecules responsible for mechanotransduction. In-silico model mostly considers canalicular fluid is Newtonian, however, physiologi
