Incomplete Kawasaki Disease in a Six-Month-Old Child: A Complex Journey to Recovery.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute, self-limited vasculitis that predominantly affects children under five years and can lead to coronary artery aneurysms. Incomplete KD involves an incomplete clinical picture supported by echocardiographic and laboratory findings. In this case, a six-month-old male child presented with a two-day fever, maculopapular erythematous rash, nonpurulent conjunctivitis, throat congestion, mild cough, intermittent loose stools, and was initially diagnosed with a viral illness treated symptomatically. Three days later, he re-presented with unresolved symptoms. Laborator

Association of individual and environmental factors exposure with asthma among children: a cross-sectional study in Northern and Southern cities, China.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have explored many risk factors associated with childhood asthma worldwide, limited studies have examined whether these risk factors differ in different regions. Our study aims to investigate whether there are differences in the factors influencing childhood asthma in Northern and Southern China and to explore possible reasons for this. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 12,771 urban children aged 4-14 in China, we first applied a group Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) to influencing factors associated with childhood asthma, usi

Bilateral Conjunctivitis, Keratitis, and Anterior Uveitis in a Patient Co-infected with Parvovirus B19 and SARS-CoV-2.

Parvovirus B-19 (B19V) is a common infection in children, occasionally complicated by ocular manifestations. In patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome virus (SARS-CoV-2), many cases of bacterial, fungal, and viral co-infections have been described. We report on a case of bilateral conjunctivitis, keratitis, and anterior uveitis that occurred in a patient co-infected by B19V and SARS-CoV-2. A young nurse developed, 20 days after the onset of asthenia and fever, a maculopapular rash and, in the following month, B19V-related arthritis. Shortly after a course of antibiotics and c

Clinical and laboratory findings in chronic conjunctivitis in cats: 91 cases (1983-1991).

Clinical findings and laboratory test results from 91 cats with chronic conjunctivitis were studied to determine the causes of the disease and the sensitivity of diagnostic procedures used, and to identify correlations between results of various diagnostic procedures and clinical or signalment variations. Mean age of affected cats was 2.9 +/- 2.7 years (+/- SD), with a range from 1 month to 11 years. Conjunctivitis was more likely to be bilateral (56 cats) than unilateral (35 cats). In cats tested for FeLV or feline immunodeficiency virus infection, 15 and 8.5%, respectively, of the results we

Improvement of Ocular Efficacy of Levofloxacin by Bioadhesive Chitosan Coated PLGA Nanoparticles: Box-behnken Design, In-vitro Characterization, Antibacterial Evaluation and Scintigraphy Study.

Conjunctivitis is considered as a common infection of ocular surfaces. Eye drop is most commonly used for treatment of conjunctivitis, but has some drawback like 95% drug eliminated after administration. Administration of levofloxacin to the anterior site in form of chitosan coated poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (LFV-CS-PLGA-NPs) expected to overcome these problem and increasing corneal contact time and permeability for effective treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis. The Nanoparticles were developed by single emulsion solvent evaporation technique and optimized for different var

[Treatment of Ocular Chlamydial Infection: Comparison of Tetracyclines and Norfloxacin].

The unilateral follicular conjunctivitis with corneal marginal infiltrates represents a clinical picture typical for two different types of bacteria: chlamydiae may cause a keratoconjunctivitis always combined with urethritis or colpitis; on the other hand staphylococci may be the reason for the same clinical features, whereas the marginal corneal infiltrates are caused in these cases by immunological reactions to the bacterial toxins. After harvesting material for bacterial investigations or direct immunofluorescence test for the detection of chlamydial antigen, 2-3 days are necessary until t

Feeder use predicts both acquisition and transmission of a contagious pathogen in a North American songbird.

Individual heterogeneity can influence the dynamics of infectious diseases in wildlife and humans alike. Thus, recent work has sought to identify behavioural characteristics that contribute disproportionately to individual variation in pathogen acquisition (super-receiving) or transmission (super-spreading). However, it remains unknown whether the same behaviours enhance both acquisition and transmission, a scenario likely to result in explosive epidemics. Here, we examined this possibility in an ecologically relevant host-pathogen system: house finches and their bacterial pathogen, Mycoplasma

Fecal-related self-inflicted conjunctivitis in a pediatric patient with major depressive disorder.

A 16-year-old girl with major depressive disorder suffered from a recurrent polymicrobial conjunctivitis, culture-positive for Escherichia coli, that persisted over several months despite evaluation by multiple specialists and appropriate antibiotic treatment. Ultimately, a brown malodorous mass, concerning for possible fecal matter, was noted in the inferior fornix of the left eye and sent for pathology review. Pathology results of the mass revealed degenerated vegetable matter debris with associated bacterial colonies consistent with fecal matter. Discussions were held with the patient, her

Common childhood bacterial infections.

Children with infectious diseases are commonly encountered in primary care settings. Identification of the subset of patients with bacterial infections is key in guiding the best possible management. Clinicians frequently care for children with infections of the upper respiratory tract, including acute otitis media, otitis externa, sinusitis, and pharyngitis. Conjunctivitis is not an uncommon reason for office visits. Bacterial pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and gastroenteritis are regularly seen. Over the last decade, a growing number of children have had infections of the skin and soft

Ocular delayed hypersensitivity: a pathogenetic mechanism of chlamydial-conjunctivitis in guinea pigs.

We used a naturally occurring, Chlamydia psittaci-caused eye disease in guinea pigs, guinea pig inclusion conjunctivitis, as an animal model to understand both the immune response and the pathogenesis of chlamydial eye infections. When instilled into the conjunctival sac of guinea pigs that had been previously infected and were immune, viable chlamydiae or a Triton X-100-soluble extract of them produced a short-lived (12-48 hr) eye disease indistinguishable clinically and histologically from that observed during primary chlamydial eye infection. The clinical and histologic findings were consis

Formulation of Chitosan Polymeric Vesicles of Ciprofloxacin for Ocular Delivery: Box-Behnken Optimization, In Vitro Characterization, HET-CAM Irritation, and Antimicrobial Assessment.

Ciprofloxacin is a commonly used antibiotic for treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis. The conventional eye drop dosage form is the widely used mode of treatment, but it has low corneal residence time. This drawback can be overcome by developing a bioadhesive noisome system (chitosan-coated) for enhanced corneal residence time. The niosomes were prepared by thin-film hydration technique and optimized by using Box-Behnken statistical design software. Cholesterol (A), Span 60 (B), and sonication time (C) were selected as independent variables, whereas vesicle size (Y1 in nm), entrapment efficien

Corneal and conjunctival infections.

Recent advances in the field of infectious conjunctivitis and keratitis include new diagnostic methods, the identification of new pathogens, and novel therapeutic agents. Tandem confocal microscopy has been used to diagnose Acanthamoeba keratitis, and polymerase chain reaction has proven to be a rapid and sensitive technique for detecting specific viral antigens, particularly in cases where cultures yield no growth. Two new antiviral agents, ganciclovir and carbocyclic oxetanocin G, have been shown to be as effective as acyclovir in treating herpetic epithelial disease. The fluoroquinolones, e
