OBJECTIVE: We encountered a contact group investigation in which differences in environmental factors, including the ventilation frequency and the airflow, led to differences in the infection risk.

Cobalt is a common inducer of allergic contact dermatitis. A new jewelry alloy containing cobalt was developed and tested on 30 individuals with documented allergy to cobalt. Of these subjects, 5 (18%) were found to be allergic to the new alloy after 7 or 8 days of exposure. In all cases, the reaction was much less severe than allergy to the 1% cobalt chloride patch test material. This new alloy should be better tolerated by individuals allergic to cobalt, perhaps because the cobalt is tightly bound in the alloy by the other main component, platinum.

Florida, USA, has witnessed an increased incidence of leprosy cases lacking traditional risk factors. Those trends, in addition to decreasing diagnoses in foreign-born persons, contribute to rising evidence that leprosy has become endemic in the southeastern United States. Travel to Florida should be considered when conducting leprosy contact tracing in any state.

We report the case of an adult male who contracted cutaneous diphtheria after receiving a tattoo in Samoa. The infection required hospital admission. The Regional Public Health Service conducted urgent contact tracing. We review the techniques employed in traditional tattooing and highlight the importance of considering C. diphtheriae as a causative organism in cutaneous infection acquired in the tropics.

By using historical contact tracing data, we estimated that 23.4% of case-patients caused 80% of Andes virus (ANDV) person-to-person transmission. We demonstrated a low but nonnegligible probability of observing a large-scale ANDV infection outbreak in a rodent-free setting consisting of close contacts, despite the historically self-limited person-to-person transmission of ANDV.
