INTRODUCTION: HIV-1 prevention programs targeting HIV-1 serodiscordant couples need to identify couples that are likely to become pregnant to facilitate discussions about methods to minimize HIV-1 risk during pregnancy attempts (i.e. safer conception) or effective contraception when pregnancy is unintended. A clinical prediction tool could be used to identify HIV-1 serodiscordant couples with a high likelihood of pregnancy within one year.
METHODS: Using standardized clinical prediction methods, we developed and validated a tool to identify heterosexual East African HIV-1 serodiscordant coupl

CONTEXT: Unintended pregnancy remains a major public health concern in the United States. Information on pregnancy rates among contraceptive users is needed to guide medical professionals' recommendations and individuals' choices of contraceptive methods.
METHODS: Data were taken from the 1995 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) and the 1994-1995 Abortion Patient Survey (APS). Hazards models were used to estimate method-specific contraceptive failure rates during the first six months and during the first year of contraceptive use for all U.S. women. In addition, rates were corrected to ta

Heterosexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) continues to increase, especially among injecting-drug users (IDUs) and their sex partners. During 1991, 22% of women with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the United States reported having had sex with a male IDU; this risk behavior was second to injecting-drug use (48%) as a transmission category for women. To better understand how to reduce heterosexual transmission of HIV, a study on condom use among male IDUs on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City, was conducted as part of CDC AIDS Community Demonstrat

Selected college students and sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic patients of the same age were compared for knowledge about AIDS, use of condoms, sexual behaviours and intentions to engage in various sexual practices. The Theory of Reasoned Action model was used to elicit beliefs about condom use and significant referents who influence condom-use decision making. Eighty-seven per cent of college students were sexually active. College students had significantly fewer sexual partners in a 30-day period than STD patients, but in a 6-month period the mean number of sexual partners was the s

The use of condoms has assumed a central position in the current strategy to prevent sexual transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus. The effectiveness of condoms in disease prophylaxis is dependent, to a degree, on their correct use. Condom manufacturers routinely include information on condom use either printed on the actual package or in an enclosed package insert. With the use of three readability formulas, the reading grade level was determined for 14 different sets of instructions included with 25 brands of condoms manufactured by 7 domestic and 1 overseas manufacturer. The reada

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis has been recognized as a major sexually transmitted infection in North America and Western Europe during the past two decades. The incidence of C trachomatis in Finland has been continuously high throughout the 1990s.
OBJECTIVES: As the epidemic of C trachomatis infection continues in Finland, there is a need to obtain up-to-date information on the prevalence and patient profiles in the planning of preventive strategies.
METHODS: A nationwide sentinel clinic network consisting of seven sexually transmitted disease (STD) and five general student health clinic

The coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) pandemic has negatively impacted family planning services worldwide. There are no published reports from Jordan on the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on family planning methods. This was a web-based cross-sectional study between September and December 2020 with 519 participants; of these 43.5% did not use any method. The most used methods were intrauterine devices, coitus interruptus and male condoms. Furthermore, 38.2% of women changed methods due to limited access to services and non-availability of methods. While 82.1% of women preferred modern methods before the

Condom failure rates for HIV are substantially greater than for pregnancy, even for highly motivated people who may reach the limit set by allowed manufacturing imperfections. This makes condoms ineffective for lifelong protection from HIV-infected sexual partners; therefore, in general, condoms provide inadequate risk reduction for the individual. Nevertheless, they are sufficiently effective that if everyone used condoms, the AIDS epidemic would stop. Quantitative public health goals to reduce the "reproductive rate" of HIV from an estimated 4-12 people infected per infected person to below

BACKGROUND: Women living with HIV (WLHIV) have lower rates of contraceptive use than noninfected peers, yet concerns regarding contraceptive efficacy and interaction with antiretroviral therapy (ART) complicate counseling. Hormonal contraceptives may increase genital tract HIV viral load (gVL) and sexual transmission risk to male partners. We compared gVL, plasma VL (pVL), and intrauterine contraceptive (IUC) continuation between the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) and copper intrauterine device (C-IUD) in Cape Town, South Africa.

This prospective study of HIV-positive Kenyan women in serodiscordant couples examined relationships between psychosocial factors, viral suppression, and condomless sex. Participants were screened for alcohol use disorders and intimate partner violence (IPV) annually and depressive symptoms every 6 months. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) detection was used as a marker for condomless sex. A total of 151 participants contributed 349 person-years of follow-up. Hazardous/harmful alcohol use was associated with increased risk of detecting PSA in vaginal secretions (aRR 1.99, 95%CI 1.08-3.66, χ2 = 4

Data from a street survey conducted among 717 women aged 17-35 in two inner-city Baltimore communities in 1991-1992 indicate that 17% of the entire sample, 38% of women using the pill and 11% of users of methods other than the pill used a condom in addition to another method the last time they had intercourse. Although adolescents reported the highest rate of combined condom and pill use (22% of 17-19-year-olds), condom use was significantly associated with pill use among adult women (odds ratio of 1.57) but not among adolescents (odds ratio of 1.03). Condom use was negatively associated with

This paper examines the potential links between family planning and maternal and child health programmes and the emerging needs of the global AIDS epidemic; and assesses the feasibility of organizing comprehensive reproductive health programmes in developing countries to include the prevention and control of reproductive tract infections including sexually transmitted infections as well as HIV/AIDS. The paper discusses arguments opposing the integration of programmes against sexually transmitted infections within family planning and MCH programmes, as well as the programmatic and epidemiologic

People's knowledge and perceptions about AIDS are critical in efforts to combat the further spread of this disease. Using data from a study on "Determinants and Consequences of Contraceptive Use Patterns in Thailand", this paper investigates the knowledge and perceptions about AIDS among ever-married women in Bangkok Metropolis. Differentials in knowledge and perceptions are investigated by socio-economic subgroups. The results indicate the need to inform and educate people about AIDS, especially those in low-income groups or with lower levels of education.

BACKGROUND: No empirical data support the 54 to 58 mm external diameter of intravaginal rings currently available and in development for contraception and other indications. Understanding how external diameter affects preference, adherence, and acceptability is critical for optimizing future product development.
OBJECTIVE: Our primary objectives were to determine which of 3 nonmedicated rings of differing external diameters was preferred and yielded the highest adherence. Secondary objectives were comparing acceptability, patterns of adherence, and safety of the 3 rings.

BACKGROUND: Unintended pregnancy and induced abortion among young (unmarried or nulliparous) women have become serious social and health issues in China, which are thought to partly result from low use of long-acting reversible contraception, such as intrauterine devices (IUDs). Considering that providers may play an especially important role in increasing use of this particular method, we investigated Chinese health care providers' attitudes and practices regarding IUDs use for nulliparous women, and further examine the potential factors and reasons contributing to their attitudes and practic
