The Effects of Group Prenatal Care on Infant Birthweight and Maternal Well-Being: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Group prenatal care models have been in use in the USA for over 20 years and have shown benefits in reducing rates of preterm birth and low birth weight infants in high-risk civilian populations. Group prenatal care has been widely implemented at military treatment facilities, despite a lack of high-quality evidence for improved perinatal outcomes in this population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomized, controlled trial, 129 patients at a military treatment facility received either traditional one-on-one prenatal care or group prenatal care using the CenteringPregnancy mod

Oro-dental characteristics in patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome compared to a healthy control group.

BACKGROUND: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a hereditary disorder that affects the connective tissue and collagen structures in the body characterised by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility and tissue fragility. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the oro-dental characteristics including measurements of tooth size of 26 patients with hypermobile EDS (hEDS), differentiated by a genetic test, compared to 39 healthy controls. METHODS: Interview, clinical and radiological examination on panoramic radiograph and cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) scan were performed. St

A randomized controlled trial of a supportive expressive group intervention for women with a family history of breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Women with a family history of breast cancer (BC) often overestimate their BC risk. Heightened psychological distress may interfere with risk comprehension and screening adherence. The primary purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of a 12-week manual-based supportive-expressive (SE) group intervention for this population. METHODS: Using a randomized control trial design, this study compared two interventions: a standard risk-counseling arm (RC) compared with that plus SE group intervention. The primary study outcome was BC anxiety. Secondary outcomes included psychosocial

Furosemide and Albumin for Diuresis of Edema (FADE): A parallel-group, blinded, pilot randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: To assess the feasibility of a trial evaluating whether hyperoncotic albumin, in addition to diuretics, improves diuresis and facilitates liberation from mechanical ventilation in critically ill adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We randomized 46 hemodynamically stable patients with hypoalbuminemia, prescribed diuretics by treating clinicians, to receive 100 mL of 25% albumin or 0.9% saline placebo BID, for three days, in blinded fashion. We chose five feasibility measurements: enrolment of 50% of eligible patients, at least one patient/week; administration of study treatment within 2 h

Lacosamide in bipolar disorder: A 30-day comparison to a retrospective control group treated with other antiepileptics.

AIM: Bipolar disorder (BD) is often treated with anticonvulsants. Lacosamide has not been tested in BD. We assessed its effects in a hospital setting in patients with BD without epilepsy. METHODS: We treated 102 consecutive hospitalized patients with acute BD with lacosamide 50-300 mg/day. We compared this sample with a retrospective sample treated with other antiepileptics (OAE). We rated patients after 3, 7, 15, and 30 days of treatment with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Young Mania Rating Scale, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, Clinical Global Impressi

Vagal Regulation of Group 3 Innate Lymphoid Cells and the Immunoresolvent PCTR1 Controls Infection Resolution.

Uncovering mechanisms that control immune responses in the resolution of bacterial infections is critical for the development of new therapeutic strategies that resolve infectious inflammation without unwanted side effects. We found that disruption of the vagal system in mice delayed resolution of Escherichia coli infection. Dissection of the right vagus decreased peritoneal group 3 innate lymphoid cell (ILC3) numbers and altered peritoneal macrophage responses. Vagotomy resulted in an inflammatory peritoneal lipid mediator profile characterized by reduced concentrations of pro-resolving media

Testing the 4Rs and 2Ss Multiple Family Group intervention: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a major mental health concern and highly prevalent among children living in poverty-impacted communities. Despite that treatments for ODD are among the most effective, few children living in poverty receive these services due to substantial barriers to access, as well as difficulties in the uptake and sustained adoption of evidence-based practices (EBPs) in community settings. The purpose of this study is to examine implementation processes that impact uptake of an evidence-based practice for childhood ODD, and the impact of a Clinic Implement

Relationship Between Pregnancy Complications and Psychiatric Disorders: A Population-Based Study With a Matched Control Group.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to identify whether pregnancy complications differ between women with and without a psychiatric disorder diagnosis prior to pregnancy. METHODS: Women who gave birth between 2007 and 2009 in Pennsylvania and were enrolled in Medicaid from one year prior to their pregnancy until their delivery were included (N=9,930); those with psychiatric disorders were compared with a matched control group (N=4,965 for each). Logistic regression analysis estimated the odds of having a pregnancy complication among those with a psychiatric diagnosis prior to pregnancy, adjusting f

A comparison of bone quality and its determinants in young opioid-dependent women with healthy control group.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about bone quality and its determinants in patients with opioid addiction. The goal of this study was to compare bone quality and its determinants in young opioid addicted women with a local group of young healthy women. METHOD: Using cross-sectional design, 104 women (mean age 29.9 yrs, range: 20-40 yrs, SD=7.8) with previous opioid addiction and current methadone substitution (3-30mg, daily) for 1-16 weeks were compared to 117 healthy women (mean age 31.0 yrs, range: 20-40 yrs, SD=5.9). Bone quality was examined with quantitative ultrasound. Anthropometric charac

CBT4BN: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Online Chat and Face-to-Face Group Therapy for Bulimia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Although cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) represents the first-line evidence-based psychotherapy for bulimia nervosa (BN), most individuals seeking treatment do not have access to this specialized intervention. We compared an Internet-based manualized version of CBT group therapy for BN conducted via a therapeutic chat group (CBT4BN) to the same treatment conducted via a traditional face-to-face group therapy (CBTF2F). METHOD: In a two-site, randomized, controlled noninferiority trial, we tested the hypothesis that CBT4BN would not be inferior to CBTF2F. A total of 179 adult pati

Comparison of the frequency of psychiatric disorders among patients with chronic low back pain and control group.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common complaints of patients referred to the clinics. Studies indicated that psychosocial factors have great impact on the patients' complaints and disability. The aim of this study was to evaluate a broad range of psychiatric disorders in patients with chronic LBP (CLBP) and compare them with those of the control group. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We applied Symptom Checklist 90-R to compare 50 CLBP patients in the case group with 100 participants without it in the control group. The questionnaire measured somatization, obsessive-compulsive disor

Teaching Emotional Intelligence: A Control Group Study of a Brief Educational Intervention for Emergency Medicine Residents.

INTRODUCTION: Emotional Intelligence (EI) is defined as an ability to perceive another's emotional state combined with an ability to modify one's own. Physicians with this ability are at a distinct advantage, both in fostering teams and in making sound decisions. Studies have shown that higher physician EI's are associated with lower incidence of burn-out, longer careers, more positive patient-physician interactions, increased empathy, and improved communication skills. We explored the potential for EI to be learned as a skill (as opposed to being an innate ability) through a brief educational

Internet versus face-to-face group cognitive-behavioral therapy for fibromyalgia: A randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore the effectiveness of Internet-delivered cognitive-behavioral therapy (iCBT) in treating fibromyalgia (FM) compared with an identical protocol using conventional group face-to-face CBT. METHODS: Sixty participants were assigned to either (a) the waiting list group, (b) the CBT group, or (c) the iCBT group. The groups were assessed at baseline, after 10 weeks of treatment, and at 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups. The primary outcome measured was the impact of FM on daily functioning, as measured by the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ). The

Secondary hyperparathyroidism and mortality in hip fracture patients compared to a control group from general practice.

INTRODUCTION: Previously, little attention has been paid as to how disturbances in the parathyroid hormone (PTH)-calcium-vitamin D-axis, such as secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), relate to mortality amongst hip fracture patients. This study aimed to (1) determine if SHPT is associated with mortality in this group of patients, (2) investigate the association between serum (s-) PTH, s-total calcium, s-25-hydroxyvitamin D (s-25(OH)D) and mortality and (3) determine the prevalence of SHPT amongst hip fracture patients and a control group. METHOD: The study included 562 hip fracture patients (
