[Olfactory impairment in patients of the older age group with COVID-19 in the acute period and in the period of convalescence.].

Complete or partial loss of sense of smell significantly reduces the quality of life and in some cases is life-threatening. A new coronavirus infection in some cases leads to hypo- or anosmia. The defeat of the olfactory epithelium, swelling of the mucous membrane, the presence of discharge in the nasal cavity complicate the effect of odorants on the neuroepithelium. With COVID-19, anosmia may be the first and leading symptom. The restoration of the sense of smell occurs more often during the first weeks, but in some cases it is persistent. A special group of patients are older patients, older

Behaviour of specific IgM, IgG and IgA class antibodies in human leptospirosis during the acute phase of the disease and during convalescence.

The behaviour of specific IgM, IgG and IgA class antibodies in human leptospirosis was studied by ELISA. Two groups of patients were followed up, 57 of them in the acute phase and 10 during convalescence, the latter with a mean follow-up of 10.5 months. IgM class antibodies were detected starting on the 2nd day of symptoms and were observed in 100% of patients up to the 5th month, in 66.7% up to the 7th month and in 50% up to the 12th month after the onset of symptoms. IgG class antibodies were first detected on the 7th day of symptoms in 9.1% of patients, with maximum reactivity (87.5%) betwe…

Effects of a protein-rich diet during convalescence from shigellosis on catch-up growth, serum proteins, and insulin-like growth factor-I.

Shigellosis in children can cause growth retardation, worsening of malnutrition, and hypoproteinemia. To assess the effects of ingestion of a protein-rich diet during convalescence, 22 children aged 2 to 4 y with culture-proven shigellosis were randomly assigned after 5 d of antibiotic treatment to 21-d feeding regimens of either a 150 kcal/kg/d high-protein diet with 15% of calories as protein or an isocaloric control diet with 6% of calories as protein. At the start and end of dietary treatment, weight, height, mid-arm circumference, skinfold thickness, serum protein concentrations, and seru…

Dominant epitopes of cross-reactive anti-domain III human antibody response change from early to late convalescence of infection with dengue virus.

Cross-neutralizing activity of human antibody response against Dengue virus complex (DENV) changes importantly over time. Domain III (DIII) of the envelope protein of DENV elicits a potently neutralizing and mostly type-specific IgG response. We used sera from 24 individuals from early- or late convalescence of DENV1 infection to investigate the evolution of anti-DIII human IgG with the time lapse since the infection. We evaluated the correlation between the serotype-specific reactivity against recombinant DIII proteins and the neutralization capacity against the four serotypes, and examined i…

Comparative Effectiveness of Different Combinations of Treatment Interventions in Patients with Stroke at the Convalescence Stage Based on the Markov Decision Process.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of different combinations of interventions in patients with stroke at the convalescence stage based on the electronic health records (EHRs) by using the Markov decision process (MDP) theory and explore the feasibility of the Markov model in the real-world study (RWS). METHODS: Screening was conducted for patients with stroke at the convalescence stage who were admitted to the Third Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University from January 2012 to January 2017 based on the EHRs. The relevant clinical data wer…

Acute-phase weight change and functional recovery during convalescent rehabilitation in older stroke patients.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Malnutrition is common among patients with stroke, and weight change is an important marker of nutritional status associated with clinical outcomes. However, the association between acute-phase weight change and functional recovery during the convalescent rehabilitation (CR) phase remains unclear, particularly in older patients. This study examined the association between acute-phase weight change and walking independence in older patients with stroke. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 650 patients aged ≥65 years admitted to a CR ward after acute stroke. Wei

Utilizing Lower Limb Phase Angle as a Functional Prognostic Indicator for Patients in Convalescent Rehabilitation Wards.

OBJECTIVES: : This study aimed to investigate whether lower limb phase angle (LL-PA) at admission predicts functional outcomes in patients undergoing rehabilitation. METHODS: : In this retrospective study, we measured the LL-PA of 256 patients (mean age 74.09±12.86 years) admitted to a convalescent rehabilitation ward upon arrival. The primary outcomes at discharge were motor Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scores and walking independence. The secondary outcomes included a 10-m walking speed and Timed Up-and-Go test result. RESULTS: : The LL-PA independently predicted discharge motor F

The effect of early COVID-19 treatment with convalescent plasma on antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2.

At the COVID-19 pandemic onset, convalescent plasma, collected from patients recovered from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, emerged as a potential treatment option, but the effect on the patient immune response was unclear. To determine treatment effect on the infection antibody response, plasma samples were collected through 90 days from 104 SARS-CoV-2-infected participants after receiving CCP or control plasma, as part of a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, controlled early treatment trial. Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) was used to quantify binding IgG

A Longitudinal Analysis of Memory Immune Responses in Convalescent Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Survivors in Uganda.

Evaluating the adaptive immune responses to natural infection with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus (CCHFV) in human survivors is critical to the development of medical countermeasures. However, the correlates of protection are unknown. As the most prevalent tick-borne human hemorrhagic fever virus with case fatality rates of 5%-30% and worldwide distribution, there is an urgent need to fill these knowledge gaps. Here, we describe adaptive immune responses in a cohort of Ugandan CCHF survivors via serial sampling over 6 years. We demonstrate persistent antibodies after infection an

Correlation between Clinical Characteristics and Antibody Levels in COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Donor Candidates.

COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) with high neutralizing antibodies has been suggested in preventing disease progression in COVID-19. In this study, we investigated the relationship between clinical donor characteristics and neutralizing anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in CCP donors. COVID-19 convalescent plasma donors were included into the study. Clinical parameters were recorded and anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels (Spike Trimer, Receptor Binding Domain (RBD), S1, S2 and nucleocapsid protein) as well as ACE2 binding inhibition were measured. An ACE2 binding inhibition < 20% was defined as an ina

SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Response Is Associated with Age and Body Mass Index in Convalescent Outpatients.

COVID-19 has had an unprecedented global impact on human health. Understanding the Ab memory responses to infection is one tool needed to effectively control the pandemic. Among 173 outpatients who had virologically confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, we evaluated serum Ab concentrations, microneutralization activity, and enumerated SARS-CoV-2-specific B cells in convalescent human blood specimens. Serum Ab concentrations were variable, allowing for stratification of the cohort into high and low responders. Neither participant sex, the timing of blood sampling following the onset of illness, nor t
