One hundred and ninety-three children with bacillary dysentery were admitted to the "Assaf Harofeh Hospital" during the years 1975-1980. Generalized convulsions were observed in 37 (19.2%) children. The incidence of seizures was significantly higher in children whose age ranged between 1 and 6 years when compared to those below or above this age range. Convulsions were not observed when fever was below 38 degrees C, however, higher fever was not associated with a parallel increase in their incidence. Temperature above 38 degrees C was less common in infants compared to older children. These fi

While convulsions associated with fever represent a serious problem in pediatric medicine, conventional animal models of febrile convulsions suffer numerous technical limitations. A microwave-hyperthermia model that eliminates these problems was tested. Microwave energy was used to increase the core temperature of 13- and 17-day-old rats, resulting in convulsions similar to febrile convulsions in human infants. Rats were irradiated for 10 min in circularly polarized waveguides at 918 MHz, CW (average SAR = 9.4 W/kg at 13 days and 18.0 W/kg at 17 days as determined by twin-well calorimetry). Da

Immediately following 4 h of continuous exercise at +/- 45% Vo2max in heat, a 23-year-old, well-trained man displayed epileptic-type convulsions. One week preceeding this incident, he completed an identical work test successfully under room temperature conditions. An assessment of his physiological and biochemical results indicated only one abnormality: during exercise in heat, an abnormally low serum magnesium concentration prevailed for most of the test. Treatment with phenobarb and magnesium chloride enteric tablets ("Slow Mag", 2 x 535 mg/d) reversed the biochemical abnormality. After chec

112 of an original sample of 134 children with febrile convulsions were reviewed between 8 years and 9 years 10 months after their initial attack. 17% of those followed up had had at least one spontaneous fit. A significant correlation was found with perinatal abnormalities. 12% had continuing recurrent fits. Persisting grand mal occurred most commonly in lower social class children who had had perinatal abnormalities and continued to have long-term neurological disorders. Psychomotor epilepsy correlated significantly with a prolonged or repeated initial convulsion with unilateral features. It

1) Etiology of convulsions starting prior to two years of age was discussed in 418 cases. Neonatal seizures before 30 days old appeared in 86 cases (53 boys and 33 girls). Three hundred and thirty-two patients (172 boys and 160 girls) had convulsions in infancy. Twelve patients (9 boys and 3 girls) suffered from convulsions both in neonatal and infantile period. 2)Etiology of convulsions was prenatal in 67 cases (16%), natal in 49 cases (12%), postnatal in 158 cases (38%) and unknown in 144 cases (34%). Prenatal factors consisted of cerebral malformation (23 cases, 6%), associated physical min

One-hundred-sixty-five children without known neurological disorder who presented with their first febrile convulsion between the ages of six months and three years were assigned to daily phenobarbitone treatment or to a control group and followed up at a special clinic for six months. One-hundred-and-sixty-one-one children completed the trial, and of the 88 children assigned to phenobarbitone treatment 10 had further convulsions during this period compared with 14 of the 73 control children. Only 49 of those assigned to phenobarbitone took the drug regularly throughout the trial, and four of

The effectiveness of intraperitoneal phenobarbitone (4 mg/kg), pentobarbitone (6 mg/kg) and diazepam (2.5, 5 and 7.5 mg/kg) in preventing lignocaine-induced seizures was studied in rats. Although the barbiturates exerted a marked depressant action on wakefulness and gait of the rats, they were still associated with a very high incidence of convulsions and deaths following 100 mg/kg intraperitoneal lignocaine hydrochloride. Diazepam, however, even in doses (2.5 and 5 mg/kg) which did not produce marked sedation was able to completely prevent convulsions. Mortality was not completely prevented a
