Deficiency of corpus callosum varies with strain and supplier of the mice.

Six inbred strains of adult mice either obtained from commercial suppliers or bred in the author's laboratory at Waterloo were assessed for size of body, brain and corpus callosum (CC) at a wide range of ages. Because almost all measures varied significantly with age, a simple regression procedure was used to minimize age effects statistically. The strains A/J, C57BL/6J and DBA/2J differed substantially in brain size and size of CC, but none of these animals ever showed severe deficits of CC fibres crossing the midsagittal plane. For these 3 strains the sizes of body, brain and CC were larger …

The Genetic Architecture of the Human Corpus Callosum and its Subregions.

The corpus callosum (CC) is the largest set of white matter fibers connecting the two hemispheres of the brain. In humans, it is essential for coordinating sensorimotor responses and performing associative or executive functions. Identifying which genetic variants underpin CC morphometry can provide molecular insights into the CC's role in mediating cognitive processes. We developed and used an artificial intelligence based tool to extract the midsagittal CC's total and regional area and thickness in two large public datasets. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis o…

Ischemia in the Splenium of the Corpus Callosum: A Rare Manifestation of Malaria.

Malaria is a parasitic disease common in many regions of the world. Cerebral malaria can cause cortical, cerebellar, and pontine infarctions. Although callosal ischemia (CI) due to diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and postoperative factors have been described in the literature, isolated CI due to malaria is very rare. We present a patient with isolated corpus callosum ischemia-an unusual complication of cerebral malaria-a case that we believe will contribute to the literature since the woman is 23 years old and has no comorbidities.

Adaptive Functioning Development in Infants With Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) is a common congenital brain malformation. Early development in ACC remains unexamined, despite the increased likelihood for developmental delays and autistic behaviors. This study compares adaptive functioning in infants/toddlers with isolated ACC to children with other neurodevelopmental conditions and typical development. METHODS: Parents of children with ACC completed the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale Interview at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months as part of a prospective longitudinal study. Comparison groups included children wit…

The corpus callosum in people with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH).

Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) is a group of genetic disorders that affect the adrenal glands. CAH manifests in abnormal levels of cortisol and androgens and is accompanied by white matter alterations. However, no CAH study has specifically targeted the corpus callosum, the brain's largest white matter fiber tract. To bridge that gap in the literature, we investigated callosal morphology in 53 individuals with CAH and 53 matched controls (66 women, 40 men). In addition to calculating areas for seven callosal subsections, we estimated the callosal thickness at 100 equidistant points. All …

Disproportion of Corpus Callosum in Fetuses With Malformations of Cortical Development.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate corpus callosum (CC) size in fetuses with malformations of cortical development (MCD) and to explore the diagnostic value of three CC length (CCL) ratios in identifying cortical abnormalities. METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective study in singleton fetuses at 20-37 weeks of gestation between April 2017 and August 2022. The midsagittal plane of the fetal brain was obtained and evaluated for the following variables: length, height, area of the corpus callosum, and relevant markers, including the ratios of corpus callosum length to internal cranial occipitofronta…

Sleep disorders in pediatric patients with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: There is limited information about sleep in agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). We aim to describe the sleep architecture and respiratory parameters of children with ACC. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 20 patients with ACC who had polysomnography between 2000 and 2023. Demographic data, body mass index or weight for length, associated conditions, and polysomnography findings were collected. National Sleep Foundation sleep quality indicators as well as increased polysomnography arousal index ≥ 10 events/h were used in the analysis. Fisher's exact test or un…

A Reversible Lesion of the Corpus Callosum Associated With Bacterial Meningitis.

We report the rare case of a 22-year-old female admitted for headaches, nausea, and an isolated lesion of the splenium of the corpus callosum (SCC) found on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A lumbar puncture test was performed, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa meningitis was found. Twenty days before the symptoms, she had spinal anesthesia for a cesarean section. As soon as the diagnosis was made, antibiotic therapy was initiated. Nonetheless, no signs or symptoms were related to this lesion, which spontaneously disappeared within one month on the control MRI. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram…

Development of the corpus callosum and cognition after neonatal encephalopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal imaging studies report corpus callosum abnormalities after neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE), but corpus callosum development and relation to cognition in childhood are unknown. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we examined the relationship between corpus callosum size, microstructure and cognitive and motor outcomes at early school-age children cooled for HIE (cases) without cerebral palsy compared to healthy, matched controls. A secondary aim was to examine the impact of HIE-related neonatal brain injury on corpus callosum size, microstructure and grow…

Outcome of Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum Diagnosed by Fetal MRI.

BACKGROUND: Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly utilized for prenatal diagnosis of agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). This study aimed to (1) describe cases of ACC diagnosed by fetal MRI, (2) determine the frequency of postnatal confirmation by MRI, and (3) understand postnatal outcomes of infants with ACC. METHODS: Maternal records from Children's National Hospital between January 2012 and June 2019 with a prenatal neurological consultation, fetal MRI, and ACC on imaging were included. Maternal, prenatal, and postnatal infant data were collected. Each case was categori…

Homonymous Hemianopsia Due to the Infarction in the Splenium of the Corpus Callosum.

The precise functions of the splenium of the corpus callosum (CC) remain unclear, and infarction of this location manifests varied clinical symptoms. We describe a rare case of right homonymous hemianopsia resulting from pure infarction in the right-side splenium of the CC. An 85-year-old man presented with right homonymous hemianopsia lasting for a week. Diffusion-weighted imaging showed a high-intensity area in the right-side splenium of the CC and did not show any other lesions in other portions of the visual pathways. Magnetic resonance angiography demonstrated anterior and posterior cereb…
