Corynebacterium striatum is a nosocomial opportunistic pathogen increasingly associated with a wide range of human infections and is often resistant to several antibiotics. We investigated the susceptibility of 63 C. striatum isolated at the Farhat-Hached hospital, Sousse (Tunisia), during the period 2011-2014, to a panel of 16 compounds belonging to the main clinically relevant classes of antimicrobial agents. Between 1972 and 1982 Seattle experienced a diphtheria outbreak involving 1,100 cases, primarily adults with cutaneous lesions. Biotyping revealed three consecutive overlapping outbreaks including 433 toxinogenic intermedius cases. A case of infective endocarditis (IE) in a 5 1/2-year-old boy in whom blood and bone marrow cultures yielded an unusual organism, a non-toxigenic strain of Corynebacterium diphtheriae, is reported. This proved fatal, and at autopsy congenital valvar aortic stenosis was found, but the vegetations occurred on an anatomically normal mitral valve. Organisms such as C. diphtheriae should not be ignored when isolated from blood cultures in suspected cases of IE.

The morbidity of diphtheria reported in Bari in 1970 and in 1971 was 17.1 and 19.1 for 100000 inhabitants; in the same years the national average was respectively 1.6 and 1.3. In a epidemiological research carried out in the same period in 1017 school-children of Bari not previously selected, 45 carriers of C. diphtheriae (4.42%) were identified. Toxigen strains were isolated from 11 carriers (1.08%). The frequency of carriers was higher in the school-children 9-11 years aged (6-04%), lower in the school-children 6-8 years aged (2.99%).
