Pyruvic acid as attenuator of water deficit in cotton plants varying the phenological stage.

The lack of water during crop growth causes damage to any production system, especially when it occurs during the initial establishment or beginning of the reproductive stage. Although cotton can be properly managed in regions with water limitation, its yield is affected at different levels according to the genetics of the cultivar adopted. Exogenous application of some organic components has shown a stress-mitigating effect and can be a valuable procedure to enhance the yield of water stress-sensitive cultivars. The objective of this work was to evaluate the benefits of exogenous application

Unveiling the Roles of LncRNA MOIRAs in Rice Blast Disease Resistance.

Rice blast disease, caused by the fungal pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae, is a major threat to rice production worldwide. This study investigates the role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in rice's response to this destructive disease, with a focus on their impacts on disease resistance and yield traits. Three specific lncRNAs coded by M. oryzae infection-responsive lncRNAs (MOIRAs), MOIRA1, MOIRA2, and MOIRA3, were identified as key regulators of rice's response to M. oryzae infection. Strikingly, when MOIRA1 and MOIRA2 were overexpressed, they exhibited a dual function: they increased rice's su

The impact of climate change and weather extremes on chestnut and olive crops in Portugal.

Climate change poses a significant risk to agroecosystems, particularly for perennial fruit trees such as chestnut and olive, by affecting phenological processes, physiological stress, and interactions with pests, diseases, and environmental factors. Although previous research has examined the effects of climate change on crop productivity and plant health, important gaps remain in understanding how long-term climate trends and extreme weather events influence yields across different phenological stages. This study evaluates the effects of climatic variability and extremes on the productivity

Trichodiene: a committed intermediate and a chink in the armor of mycotoxigenic Fusariumspecies.

Trichothecenes, mycotoxins produced by some Fusarium species, threaten crop production, animal health, and food safety. Among them, deoxynivalenol (or vomitoxin) is a major contaminant of cereals targeted by resistance breeding and chemical or biological controls. Trichodiene, the volatile intermediate in the trichothecene biosynthesis pathway, reduces mycotoxin production and shows promise as a source of biocontrol. Genetic legacy effects in a mungbean-wheat rotation reveal potential to breed for system-level yield gains.

Legume crops provide protein-rich food, serve as critical disease breaks in cereal rotations, and contribute to soil fertility through symbiotic nitrogen fixation. However, crop improvement programs typically focus on within-crop performance rather than system-level benefits. We hypothesize that legacy effects (the influence of one crop's genotype on subsequent crop performance) are under genetic control and could be targeted in breeding programs. To test this, we evaluated how 309 genetically diverse mungbean genotypes influenced subsequent wheat performance. The mungbean panel was grown, fol

The effect of climate uncertainty on water management for long-run aquifer abundance.

The adaptation of agriculture to climate change depends on the ability to integrate irrigation practices into water management applications. This requires robust water use estimates and the evaluation of management practices as a tool to conserve water. We combine a landscape level agricultural management model that accounts for risk and uncertainty through climate change with an aquifer model. The modelling system produces estimates of the long run aquifer abundance for management scenarios for a study area in the Lower Mississippi River Basin, United States. Except in the driest climate outc

Can abiotic stresses in plants be alleviated by manganese nanoparticles or compounds?

Abiotic stress has become one of the most challenging problems for agriculture as the world population keeps increasing dramatically. Crop stress management using manganese (Mn) compounds has been recently employed to reduce the negative effects caused by drought, harsh temperature, and salinity. In response to abiotic stress, an adequate supply of Mn has shown to remediate plant manganese deficiency, induce Mn superoxide dismutase at the transcriptional level to face reactive oxygen species production, and stimulate manganese-dependent proteins to maintain cell integrity. Lately, nanoparticle

Comparison of schistosome transmission in a single- and a double-cropped area in the rice irrigation scheme, 'Office du Niger', Mali.

Rice is becoming increasingly important as a staple food in West Africa and there is a need to increase production to meet the demand and one way to achieve this is to harvest two annual crops. It is possible that such intensified irrigation could affect transmission of schistosomes and this study attempts to compare schistosome transmission in single and double-cropped areas of an irrigation scheme, 'Office du Niger', in Mali. Double cropping has been practised for some years in the Niono area while in the Kolongotomo area still only a single crop is grown. Parasitological surveys conducted i

Isolation and characterization of salt-tolerant bacteria with plant growth-promoting activities from saline agricultural fields of Haryana, India.

BACKGROUND: Soil salinity has been one of the biggest hurdles in achieving better crop yield and quality. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are the symbiotic heterogeneous bacteria that play an important role in the recycling of plant nutrients through phytostimulation and phytoremediation. In this study, bacterial isolates were isolated from salt-polluted soil of Jhajjar and Panipat districts of Haryana, India. The potential salt-tolerant bacteria were screened for their PGPR activities such as phosphate solubilization, hydrogen cyanide (HCN), indole acetic acid (IAA) and ammonia pr

Biotic factors dominate carbon fluxes and budget of a drip-irrigated and plastic-mulched cotton system in an arid oasis of Northwest China.

Drip-irrigated and plastic-mulched (DIPM) cotton systems are widely adopted in the arid oases of Xinjiang, where water scarcity poses significant challenges to crop production. Despite the widespread use of these systems, the impact of agricultural management practices, crop development, and environmental factors on carbon fluxes and budget in these arid regions remains insufficiently quantified. This study combined eddy-covariance measurements with micrometeorology, crop growth and agricultural management to assess seasonal and interannual carbon fluxes and carbon budget over ten growing seas…

Development and Application of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) Markers for the Identification of Pest and Disease Resistance in Sugarcane.

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is an economically important crop cultivated worldwide for sugar and bioenergy production. However, its productivity is significantly affected by various pests and diseases, which lead to substantial yield and quality losses. Traditional breeding approaches for developing resistant varieties are often time-consuming and complicated due to the complex polyploid genome of sugarcane. In recent years, molecular marker technologies have provided powerful tools for the rapid identification and selection of desirable traits in crop improvement programs. Among the available

Balancing Growth and Defense: Nanoselenium and Melatonin in Tea (Camellia sinensis) Protection against Glufosinate.

Current crop stress resistance research suggests that the prominent stimulants nanoselenium (NSe) and melatonin (MT) might improve tea safety, quality, and stress resistance induced by the widely used nonselective herbicide glufosinate (GLU). Their biofortification effects on tea growth, antioxidant activity, and secondary metabolism pathways response to GLU remain unclear. Here, NSe, MT, and their combination NSe-MT effectively reduced 26.6-50.9% GLU and its metabolites in tea seedlings, balanced the photosystem, enhanced antioxidant defenses, and optimized reactive oxygen species scavenging
