Quality and content evaluation of male HPV infection on Bilibili and TikTok: a cross-sectional study.

Social media platforms, particularly short-video applications, have emerged as crucial channels for disseminating public health information. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in males represents a significant sexually transmitted disease burden with under-addressed health impacts. Despite its prevalence, the quality of HPV-related content targeting male audiences on these platforms remains unevaluated, posing potential risks to public health literacy. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 265 TikTok and Bilibili videos addressing male HPV infection. Video reliability and educational qu

Cross-species transcriptomics translation reveals a role for the unfolded protein response in Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

Numerous studies have identified similarities in blood transcriptomic signatures of tuberculosis (TB) phenotypes between mice and humans, including type 1 interferon production and innate immune cell activation. However, murine infection pathophysiology is distinct from human disease. We hypothesized that this is partly due to differences in the relative importance of biological pathways across species. To address this animal-to-human gap, we applied a systems modeling framework, Translatable Components Regression, to identify the axes of variation in the preclinical data most relevant to huma

Emergence of Incidentalomas Following Chest CT Screening for COVID-19 Infection: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study.

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has raised several questions about its potential long-term impacts. During the pandemic, computed tomography (CT) chest scans were frequently employed for the diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia. The increased utilization of CT scans as a diagnostic tool has facilitated the detection of subtle abnormalities that may not have been easily discernible previously. Aim The primary objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of non-COVID-19 lung incidental pathologies in chest CT scans performed to screen for COVID-19, with a focus on autoimmune cond

Evaluating national infection prevention and control minimum requirements: evidence from global cross-sectional surveys, 2017-22.

BACKGROUND: WHO infection prevention and control (IPC) minimum requirements provide standards to reduce the risk of infection during health-care delivery. We aimed to investigate the global implementation of these requirements at national levels and the progress of doing so across 2021-22 compared with 2017-18 to identify future directions for interventions. METHODS: National IPC focal points were invited to complete an online survey measuring IPC minimum requirements from July 19, 2021, to Jan 31, 2022. The primary outcome was the proportion of countries meeting IPC minimum requirements. Cou

A novel and low-cost cross-priming amplification assay for rapid detection of Babesia duncani infection.

Babesia duncani, responsible for human babesiosis, is one of the most important tick-borne intraerythrocytic pathogens. Traditionally, babesiosis is definitively diagnosed by detecting parasite DNA in blood samples and examining Babesia parasites in Giemsa-stained peripheral blood smears. Although these techniques are valuable for determining Babesia duncani, they are often time-consuming and laborious. Therefore, developing rapid and reliable B. duncani identification assays is essential for subsequent epidemiological investigations and prevention and control. In this study, a cross-priming a

Mucosal administration of anti-bacterial antibodies provide long-term cross-protection against Pseudomonas aeruginosa respiratory infection.

Bacterial respiratory infections, either acute or chronic, are major threats to human health. Direct mucosal administration, through the airways, of therapeutic antibodies (Abs) offers a tremendous opportunity to benefit patients with respiratory infections. The mode of action of anti-infective Abs relies on pathogen neutralization and crystallizable fragment (Fc)-mediated recruitment of immune effectors to facilitate their elimination. Using a mouse model of acute pneumonia induced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, we depicted the immunomodulatory mode of action of a neutralizing anti-bacterial Abs.

Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Urinary Tract Infection among Diabetic Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common long-term complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). Additionally, various factors, such as socio-demographics, type of DM, fasting blood glucose, regular diabetes monitoring, comorbid chronic diseases, HbA1c, body mass index (BMI), and duration of DM, are also thought to predispose individuals to developing UTIs more frequently when they have DM. This research aims to evaluate the risk factors for UTIs and their prevalence among people with DM in Saudi Arabia (KSA). This cross-sectional study was conducted among 440 adults with type 1,

New daily persistent headache after SARS-CoV-2 infection in Latin America: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Persistent headache is a frequent symptom after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and there is currently limited knowledge about its clinical spectrum and predisposing factors. A subset of patients may be experiencing new daily persistent headache (NDPH) after COVID-19, which is among the most treatment-refractory primary headache syndromes. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in Latin America to characterize individuals with persistent headache after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and to identify factors associated with NDPH. Determinants of QuantiFERON Plus-diagnosed tuberculosis infection in adult Ugandan TB contacts: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The tuberculin skin test is commonly used to diagnose latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in resource-limited settings, but its specificity is limited by factors including cross-reactivity with BCG vaccine and environmental mycobacteria. Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA) overcome this problem by detecting M. tuberculosis complex-specific responses, but studies to determine risk factors for IGRA-positivity in high TB burden settings are lacking. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine factors associated with a positive IGRA by employing the QuantiFERON-TB®

Longitudinal and Cross-sectional Analyses of Asymptomatic HIV-1/Malaria Co-infection in Kisumu County, Kenya.

Individuals infected with HIV-1 experience more frequent and more severe episodes of malaria and are likely to harbor asymptomatic parasitemia, thus potentially making them more efficient reservoirs of malaria. Two studies (cross-sectional and longitudinal) were designed in sequence between 2015-2018 and 2018-2020, respectively, to test the hypothesis that HIV-1 infected individuals have higher prevalence of asymptomatic parasitemia and gametocytemia than the HIV-1 negatives. This article describes the overall design of the two studies, encompassing data for the longitudinal study and addition

Omicron BA.2 breakthrough infection enhances cross-neutralization of BA.2.12.1 and BA.4/BA.5.

BNT162b2-vaccinated individuals after Omicron BA.1 breakthrough infection have strong serum-neutralizing activity against Omicron BA.1, BA.2, and previous SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) yet less against the highly contagious Omicron sublineages BA.4 and BA.5 that have displaced previous variants. Because the latter sublineages are derived from Omicron BA.2, we characterized serum-neutralizing activity of COVID-19 mRNA vaccine triple-immunized individuals who experienced BA.2 breakthrough infection. We demonstrate that sera of these individuals have broadly neutralizing activity against

Relationship between attitudes toward COVID-19 infection, depression and anxiety: a cross-sectional survey in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Although negative attitudes are known to develop with experiences of COVID-19 infection, it remains unclear whether such attitudes contribute to depression and anxiety as sequelae of COVID-19. We aimed to investigate the relationships between attitude towards COVID-19 infection and post-COVID-19 depression and anxiety. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of COVID-19 recovered patients was conducted from July to September 2021 in Japan. Outcome variables, depression and anxiety were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7); scores of 10 an

Possible kidney-lung cross-talk in COVID-19: in silico modeling of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

BACKGROUND: Publicly available genomics datasets have grown drastically during the past decades. Although most of these datasets were initially generated to answer a pre-defined scientific question, their repurposing can be useful when new challenges such as COVID-19 arise. While the establishment and use of experimental models of COVID-19 are in progress, the potential hypotheses for mechanisms of onset and progression of COVID-19 can be generated by using in silico analysis of known molecular changes during COVID-19 and targets for SARS-CoV-2 invasion. METHODS: Selecting condition: COVID-19
