Validation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Korean translation of the Achilles tendon Total Rupture Score.

BACKGROUND: The Achilles tendon Total Rupture Score (ATRS) is a widely used patient-reported outcome measure to assess clinical outcomes of Achilles tendon rupture, but it has not been validated in Korean yet. The purpose of this study was to translate the ATRS into Korean and evaluate its reliability and validity in a Korean population. METHODS: The ATRS was translated into Korean according to recommended guidelines for forward-backward translation. Thirty-eight patients who underwent surgical treatment for Achilles tendon rupture from 2017 to 2019 were enrolled. Reliability was evaluated by

Physical Conflict During Pregnancy: A Socioecological, Cross-Cultural Examination of Risk and Protective Factors for New Zealand Women.

Participants were 5,831 women in their third trimester of pregnancy, part of a large, longitudinal, pre-birth national cohort study. Women reported on their experience of pushing and shoving, throwing or breaking objects within their relationship over the past month. Univariable regression models examined the association of a large number of potential risk and protective factors. Those significant at the univariable level were carried forward into final multivariable analyses, stratified by New Zealand's four main ethnic groups: European, Māori, Pacific, and Asian peoples. Relationship commitm

Cross-Cultural Adaption and Validation of the Vocal Fatigue Index in German.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to implement a cross-validation and adaption of the Vocal Fatigue Index (VFI) in German language. METHODS: The translation process for the German version (GV) of the VFI passed through three steps of translation before a final version was completed. Study subjects included 100 vocally healthy subjects and 101 voice-disordered subjects with various types of dysphonia. The internal consistency was determined using Cronbach's alpha (cron α) and the item-total analysis. Test-retest reliability was measured with the Pearson correlation coefficient. To assess

Cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric properties of the European Portuguese version of the Global Perceived Effect Scale in patients with chronic low back pain.

PURPOSE: To cross-culturally adapt the Global Perceived Effect Scale (GPES) into Portuguese and investigate its psychometric properties in patients with chronic low back pain. METHODS: Cross-cultural adaptation was carried out according to published guidelines. Along with measures for pain and disability, GPES was administered at baseline, 48-h later and post-intervention. To estimate test-retest reliability, the intraclass correlation coefficient was used. The validity was examined through the correlation between the GPES and the Patient Global Improvement Change Scale and the contribution o

Eating symptomatology and general psychopathology in patients with anorexia nervosa from China, UK and Spain: A cross-cultural study examining the role of social attitudes.

Cultural studies exploring differences in the manifestation of anorexia nervosa (AN) have primarily focus on Western and non-Western cultures. However, no study so far has considered the role that social attitudes (i.e. Collectivist vs. Individualist cultural values) have in the clinical manifestations of eating disorders, including AN patients. With this in mind, the aim of this study is to compare eating and general psychopathology in a large sample of individuals diagnosed with AN from China, Spain, and United Kingdom (UK), in order to study the differences according to belonging to Western

[Housing Interventions in Severe Mental Illness - International Evidence from RCTs].

Objective Housing is important among psychosocial interventions for people with severe mental disorders. What do we know about the effectiveness of housing interventions? Methods Systematic literature search for RCTs. Results Few RCTs, almost exclusively with homeless individuals were conducted. Housing stability is one of the most direct indicators of the effectiveness of housing interventions among homeless people. There are weaker or inhomogeneous findings in other outcome areas. There are no clear results yet regarding the effectiveness of different housing interventions compared with each

[A transcultural study of Taijin-kyofu and social phobia--differences of experiences of eye communication between Japanese and German patients].

The transcultural psychiatry of "Taijin-kyofu" methodologically involves two problems. (1) Field-work regarding western social anxiety has not been sufficiently carried out by Japanese researchers. (2) Most attention has been paid to partial-phenomenal differences rather than to a general-essential difference between western social phobia and Japanese "Taijin-kyofu". Taking account of these problems, we presented four German cases of social phobia and compared their experiences of making eye contact with those of "Taijin-kyofu" patients. This approach revealed a general-essential difference be

Voice Activity and Participation Profile (VAPP) in assessing the effects of voice disorders on patients' quality of life: validity and reliability of the Finnish version of VAPP.

The Voice Activity and Participation Profile (VAPP) is a self-assessment questionnaire describing the limitation of activities and participation of individuals with dysphonia. In this study, the validity and reliability of the Finnish translation of the VAPP was evaluated using 43 outpatients with various functional and organic voice disorders. A control group was formed consisting of 43 subjects matched according to age, gender, and profession, with normal voices. The VAPP was sensitive for voice disorders and items in the questionnaire had high internal consistency. The VAPP had a strong cor

Anxiety symptoms in Japanese and in German children.

The purpose of this study was to compare the frequency of anxiety symptoms and their association with gender and age in Japanese and German children using the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS). A total of 1837 children (862 from Germany and 975 from Japan) between the age of 8 and 12 years were investigated. Results revealed that German children reported significantly higher symptoms of separation anxiety, social phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder than Japanese children. Conversely, Japanese children reported significantly higher scores on symptoms rel

Education of psychiatry in Japan.

This paper discusses the problems of Japanese under- and postgraduate education of psychiatry, and indicates several important points for psychiatric education. Most medical schools give lectures on psychiatry to fourth and fifth graders. Lecturing hours average 2.3% of the total lecture time for medical students. However, the hours have tended to decrease recently, and lectures by the Department of Psychiatry are spreading to the first and second graders. These lectures include behavioral science, psychology and science for human relationships. The following problems should be solved urgently

Transsexualism in medicolegal limine: an examination and a proposal for change.

This article investigates transsexualism and our creation of a state of medicolegal limine for transsexuals. The article addresses transsexuality as it is currently defined and explores our dichotomization of sex and gender. The author discusses both the social construction and the praxis of transsexuality, highlighting the medicolegal implications resulting from our current approach to transsexuality. The author argues that the creation of a medicolegal limine essentially prevents transsexuals from ever integrating fully as a member of one sex or gender, while simultaneously preventing the la

[Hematologic effects of clozapine: evaluation of the international experience].

Before clozapine was marketed, 4 cases of agranulocytosis occurred amongst the 2,900 patients exposed to the drug in the clinical studies from 1962 to 1972. At that time the frequency of 0.14% was considered comparable to that published with some phenothiazines. After clozapine was launched in different countries, several notifications of agranulocytosis/granulocytopenia were reported, with a high mortality ratio in some countries. This outbreak of agranulocytosis has led to the implementation of recommendations, particularly a strict worldwide hematologic surveillance with a discontinuation o

Neurasthenia: a paradigm of social psychopathology in a transitional society.

A particular social aspect of an illness is reflected in an emphasis on those symptoms that the society considers socially detrimental and/or destabilizing. Thus, in the work- and production-oriented society, chronic fatigue, which affects one's productivity and ability to work, becomes a hallmark of neurasthenia or neurasthenia-like syndrome. In a society based on rigid social structures and severely limited possibilities for social change, excessive irritability and outbursts of anger are perceived as a greater threat to the stability of the existing social order, and therefore they come to

Delineation of social phobia in Saudia Arabians.

Eighty Saudi Arabian males with social phobia who met DSMIIIR criteria, were evaluated psychiatrically and socially according to the MMPI social withdrawal scale standardized to the Saudi population. They were empirically grouped as mild, moderate or severe cases. They were also evaluated symptomatically according to the Leeds anxiety-depression scale to give ratings of depression and anxiety, separately and in combination. Thirty-seven and a half percent and 55% of the patients were mild-moderately and severely anxious respectively; 55% and 34% were mild-moderately and significantly depressed
