Inverse least squares (ILS) regression is an advancement of classical least squares (CLS) regression, enabling the calculation of concentrations without requiring prior knowledge of the number of components in a mixture. We demonstrate the feasibility of using a stochastic solver, full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo with the initiator approximation (i-FCIQMC), to converge fragment embedding calculations, namely bootstrap embedding (BE). We studied the reaction of electronically excited sulfur dioxide in the triplet state (3SO2) with a variety of alkane species, including propane, n-butane, isobutane, n-pentane, n-hexane, cyclohexane, n-octane, and n-nonane. To determine whether changes in peripheral vitamin A levels are associated with symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), 10 PMS patients and 10 controls were studied. They gave blood at 2- or 3-day intervals through three menstrual cycles. The vitamin A was measured by fluorometry after cyclohexane extraction. We describe a gas-chromatographic micromethod, with use of a solid injection system and an electron capture detector, for determination of underivatized clonazepam in serum. Vigorous mixing of 100 microliter of serum with 20 microliter of borate buffer (pH 9.0) and 100 microliter of a cyclohexane/dichloromethane mixture (4/6 by vol) containing methyl nitrazepam as internal standard suffices to extract 86% of the clonazepam into the organic layer. The diffusion of three weakly acidic drugs (warfarin, sulfaethidole, and barbital) in cyclohexane-buffer and n-octanol-buffer systems was studied by two different methods; shaking and model cell type of experimentation. At low pH values the drugs moved generally more readily into the organic phases than at higher pH. In carotenoids internal conversion between the allowed (S(2)) and forbidden (S(1)) excited states occurs on a sub-picosecond timescale; the involvement of an intermediate excited state(s) (S(x)) mediating the process is controversial. New Hofmann type benzene clathrates in the form of M(CyHEA)2Ni(CN)4·2benzene (where CyHEA=2-(1-cyclohexenyl)ethylamine and M=Ni or Cd) have been prepared in powder form and FT-IR and Raman spectra have been reported. The results suggest that title compounds are similar in structure to Hofmann type clathrates and their structures consist of polymeric layers of |M-Ni(CN)4|∞ with the CyHEA molecule bounded to the metal atoms (M).
