Potential of some monoterpenoids and their new N-methyl carbamate derivatives against Schistosomiasis snail vector, Biomphalaria alexandrina.

Some monoterpenoids and their corresponding new N-methyl carbamate derivatives were used to study their molluscicidal effect on Biomphalaria alexandrina, the snail-vector of Schistosoma mansoni in Egypt. Improving the efficacy of the tested monoterpenoids and/or their corresponding carbamates by either piperonyl butoxide (PBO) or triton X-100 (TX) was also performed. Thymol, β-citronellol, carvacrol, and geraniol exhibited high molluscicidal activity against the snails. Geraniol, β-citronellol, and carvacrol were strongly synergized by PBO but, an opposite trend was found with TX. The mollusci

[An Innovative Combination in the Combat Against Trypanosoma cruzi: The Synergistic Effect of Benznidazole and Essential Oil Components].

Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is one of the most significant neglected tropical diseases. Approximately 6-7 million people worldwide are estimated to be infected with T.cruzi, with about 12000 deaths annually attributed to the disease. In Türkiye, natural transmission does not occur due to the absence of vectors carrying the parasite. However, touristic or commercial travels to endemic areas and migration from these regions increase the risk of Chagas disease emergence in the country. Currently, only two drugs, benznidazole (BENZ) and nifurtimox, are avail

Cometabolic degradation of trichloroethene by Rhodococcus sp. strain L4 immobilized on plant materials rich in essential oils.

The cometabolic degradation of trichloroethene (TCE) by Rhodococcus sp. L4 was limited by the loss of enzyme activity during TCE transformation. This problem was overcome by repeated addition of inducing substrates, such as cumene, limonene, or cumin aldehyde, to the cells. Alternatively, Rhodococcus sp. L4 was immobilized on plant materials which contain those inducers in their essential oils. Cumin seeds were the most suitable immobilizing material, and the immobilized cells tolerated up to 68 muM TCE and degraded TCE continuously. The activity of immobilized cells, which had been inactivate

Helichrysum populifolium Compounds Inhibit MtrCDE Efflux Pump Transport Protein for the Potential Management of Gonorrhoea Infection.

The progressive development of resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae to almost all available antibiotics has made it crucial to develop novel approaches to tackling multi-drug resistance (MDR). One of the primary causes of antibiotic resistance is the over-expression of the MtrCDE efflux pump protein, making this protein a vital target for fighting against antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in N. gonorrhoeae. This study was aimed at evaluating the potential MtrCDE efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs) and their stability in treating gonorrhoea infection. This is significant because finding novel EPIs would

Bacteria-specific phototoxic reactions triggered by blue light and phytochemical carvacrol.

Development of alternatives to antibiotics is one of the top priorities in the battle against multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. Here, we report that two naturally occurring nonantibiotic modalities, blue light and phytochemical carvacrol, synergistically kill an array of bacteria including their planktonic forms, mature biofilms, and persisters, irrespective of their antibiotic susceptibility. Combination but not single treatment completely or substantially cured acute and established biofilm-associated Acinetobacter baumannii and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infec

Leishmanicidal activity of carvacrol-rich essential oil from Lippia sidoides Cham.

Leishamaniasis is a disease that affects more than 2 million people worldwide, whose causative agent is Leishmania spp. The current therapy for leishmaniasis is far from satisfactory. All available drugs, including pentavalent antimony, require parenteral administration and are potentially toxic. Moreover, an increase in clinical resistance to these drugs has been reported. In this scenario, plant essential oils used traditionally in folk medicine are emerging as alternative sources for chemotherapeutic compounds. In this study, in vitro leishmanicidal effects of a thymol- and a carvacrol-rich

Bioinsecticidal potential of Baeckea frutescens (Myrtales: Myrtaceae) essential oil: chemical variation, yeast encapsulation, and larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Plant essential oils are promising alternatives to synthetic larvicides, but their development is often limited by chemical variability, formulation challenges, and concerns regarding non-target toxicity. Baeckea frutescens, a widespread weed species, remains insufficiently characterized in terms of chemotypic diversity, stereochemical composition, and larvicidal selectivity. The essential oils were dominated by mono- and sesquiterpenoids, with p-cymene, 1,8-cineole, α- and β-pinene, α-humulene, caryophyllene oxide, and humulene epoxide II as major constituents. PCA and HCA revealed distinct c
