The effects of different drugs on the sebaceous gland is described by the use of an animal model. A castrated rat Wistar was made hyperseborrheic with implant of testosterone. On this model, graduated by a different anti androgen (acetate of cyproterone), anti-seborrheic effect is measured, bound or not the antiandrogenic effect of retinoids, cimetidine, spironolactone and, minoxidil. Retinoids reduced the surface of sebaceous glands but did not express an anti-androgenic effect. Cimetidine and spironolactone presented the same action. Minoxidil had no effect on this model.

A case of adrenal tumor with isolated secretion of testosterone in a menopaused woman is reported. All other androgens (Déhydro-épi-androstérone, Sulfate de Déhydro-épi-androstérone, Delta 4 androstène-dione) were normal as well as other adrenal hormones. This tumor produced a mild hirsutism. A treatment with Cyproterone Acetate, then with Dexamethasone did not produce a significant change. A complete review of literature points out the rarity of this observation, since only twelve similar cases have been previously reported.

The Primary Care physician must know the risk factors and to suspect the presence of a pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) when there is a compatible clinical picture. We present two cases of a massive PTE in young healthy women in whom the taking of ethinylestradiol combined with cyproterone acetate was the only existing risk factor. We believe that the recommendations of the Spanish Medicines Agency should be followed and prescribe those contraceptives that have less than 30ug of ethinylestradiol and a second generation gestagen.

Precocious puberty can be very confusing and frightening to an affected child and his or her family. The following presentation includes the pertinent physiology, psychology, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of precocious pubertal development. Radioimmunoassays for gonadotropins and several key hormones are now available which enable the clinician to evaluate and follow the patient's condition with confidence and expertise. Three drugs have been proven effective and the most recent one, cyproterone acetate, has produced exciting clinical remissions with virtually no known side effects.

Acne is a disease of the pilosebaceous units and these are mainly under hormonal control. In female patients, hormonal therapy is a unique opportunity for the treatment of acne. Several combined oral contraceptives (COCs), cyproterone acetate, spironolactone, flutamide, and others, have been tried for the control of acne. An overview on the use of the most useful drugs in clinical practice was conducted. COCs are thoroughly discussed, also taking into consideration their potential side effects. A practical approach with guidelines on the use of COC in acne is proposed.
