We report a case of lupus interstitial cystitis in 17 year-old female. The patient presented with suprapubic pain, urinary frequency, dysuria, nocturia and no bacterial growth. Intravenous pyelography showed a low capacity bladder with thickwall, and a bilateral ureterohydronephrosis. Interstitial cystitis was confirmed on bladder biopsy specimen. Clinical symptoms remained eventhough after steroid treatment. Clinical signs of cystitis occurring in a patient with systemic lupus erythematous could be a manifestation of a lupus cystitis.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate further the observation that men with prostatodynia may represent a subset of patients with interstitial cystitis.
METHODS: The charts of 20 patients with the diagnosis of nonbacterial prostatitis or prostatodynia who underwent cystoscopy and bladder hydrodistention were retrospectively reviewed.

The bladder mast cell contains many granules, each of which can secrete many vasoactive and nociceptive molecules. We report a case of cystitis due to Toxoplasma gondii in a patient with AIDS who presented with dysuria and urinary frequency. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of cystitis due to this organism. Microscopy of bladder specimens revealed inflammatory cystitis, with Toxoplasma cysts disseminated within the mucosa. No other pathogen could be detected by urine culture, cytoscopy, or staining of bladder specimens obtained at autopsy. A total of 25 patients with interstitial cystitis who had failed standard therapy with hydrodistension of the bladder during anesthesia and intravesical dimethyl sulfoxide instillation underwent treatment with the tricyclic antidepressant amitriptyline. The initial dosage of 25 mg. before bed was increased gradually during a 3-week period to 75 mg. at bedtime. To induce an experimental model of bacterial cystitis, ten preconditioned dogs underwent bladder irritation with a 0.1% alcoholic solution of salicylic acid followed in 24 hours by an intravesicular infusion of Proteus mirabilis. The dogs were observed for the following 14 days (five dogs) and 17 days (five dogs) and then euthanatized and necropsied. Cyclophosphamide (CYP) is extensively used in tumor therapy, but its clinical application is limited by its toxic effects on the bladder. Since CYP-induced cystitis is believed to be mediated by acrolein (ACR), a product of lipid peroxidation that triggers ferroptosis, we hypothesized that ferroptosis might be an essential molecular mechanism underlying CYP-induced cystitis.
