Asymmetric interhemispheric delta waves during all-night sleep in humans.

OBJECTIVE: In order to better understand the asymmetry of brain function during sleep, period-amplitude analysis of delta EEG activity was performed on polysomnograms (PSGs) in normal humans. Twenty healthy, right-handed male volunteers aged 22-35 years (mean age 27.2 years) served as subjects in this study. METHODS: EEGs were recorded from disc electrodes placed at bilateral frontal, central, parietal, occipital, anterotemporal and posterotemporal (10-20 electrode system) sites using A1+A2 for reference. Period-amplitude analysis was performed by the zero-crossing method using the Medilog Sl

Optogenetic targeting of cortical astrocytes selectively improves NREM sleep in an Alzheimer's disease mouse model.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition marked by memory impairments and distinct histopathological features such as amyloid-beta (Aβ) accumulations. Alzheimer's patients experience sleep disturbances at early stages of the disease. APPswe/PS1dE9 (APP) mice exhibit sleep disruptions, including reductions in non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, that contribute to their disease progression. In addition, astrocytic calcium transients associated with a sleep-dependent brain rhythm, slow oscillations prevalent during NREM sleep, are disrupted in APP mice. However, at p

Anterior EEG slowing in dementia with Lewy bodies: a multicenter European cohort study.

Electroencephalography (EEG) slowing with prealpha dominant frequency (DF) in posterior derivations is a biomarker for dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) diagnosis, in contrast with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, an intrasubject re-evaluation of the original data, which contributed to the identification of EEG DLB biomarker, showed that DF was slower in anterior than posterior derivations. We suppose this anterior-posterior gradient of DF slowing could arise in DLB from a thalamocortical dysrhythmia, differently involving the anterior and posterior cortical areas, and correlating with cogniti

'Hibernating' accessory pathway.

A 13-year-old boy presented with recurrent narrow QRS tachycardia from which he had been suffering for one year. An electrophysiology study revealed a concealed left lateral accessory pathway with inducible orthodromic atrioventricular re-entry tachycardia using the same pathway. The accessory pathway was ablated in January 2004. After the ablation, atrioventricular block was demonstrated (with adenosine), as was ventriculo-atrial block, and the patient had paroxysmal tachycardia one month later. This time, however, the electrocardiogram in sinus rhythm showed a negative delta wave in V1, sugg

Associations of daily step counts with cognitive, clinical, and resting-state electroencephalographic measures in patients with cognitive decline due to Alzheimer's disease.

Sedentary behavior is a recognized and modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia across neurodegenerative conditions. This study used a smartwatch-based telemonitoring procedure combined with ecological cognitive assessment to examine whether step counts can capture sedentary behavior and its association with cognitive functioning in patients with mild cognitive impairment (ADMCI) and dementia (ADD) due to Alzheimer's disease. Then, 19 ADD, 28 ADMCI, and 23 cognitively unimpaired older adults (Nold) were consecutively recruited. Participants underwent clinical assessment, resti

The natural frequencies of the resting human brain: An MEG-based atlas.

Brain oscillations are considered to play a pivotal role in neural communication. However, detailed information regarding the typical oscillatory patterns of individual brain regions is surprisingly scarce. In this study we applied a multivariate data-driven approach to create an atlas of the natural frequencies of the resting human brain on a voxel-by-voxel basis. We analysed resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) data from 128 healthy adult volunteers obtained from the Open MEG Archive (OMEGA). Spectral power was computed in source space in 500 ms steps for 82 frequency bins logarithmica

Old stuff still trending: use of propafenone as a safety net until catheter ablation in a patient with documented pre-excited atrial fibrillation and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome - a classic case report.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation in Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome may result in life-threateningly rapid antegrade conduction over a bypass tract, manifested by an irregular broad-complex (pre-excited) tachycardia that can degenerate to ventricular fibrillation. The shortest pre-excited RR interval below 250 ms during atrial fibrillation (AF) predicts increased risk of sudden cardiac death. CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of a 43-year-old man with unremarkable cardiac history who presented due to sudden-onset feeling of palpitations and pre-syncope after strenuous lifting. Electrocardiography

Biologically active luteinizing hormone (LH) in Klinefelter's syndrome: response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and effects of testosterone undecanoate.

Basal and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-stimulated levels of biologically active and immunoreactive LH (bLH and iLH) were measured in six patients with Klinefelter's syndrome (KS) (mean age 24.7 years). In the same patients the diurnal rhythm of serum testosterone (T) was investigated (morning values vs. evening values). The results were compared with those obtained in ten normal young men (mean age 29.3 years). Moreover, in one patient with KS we studied the effects of testosterone undecanoate (TU) administration on bLH and iLH basal levels. A sensitive "in vitro" bioassay, based on T

Increased pre-alpha functional connectivity in dementia with Lewy bodies.

BackgroundResting-state EEG studies have shown that neurodegenerative dementias like Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) can alter cortical functional connectivity. In DLB, the presence of a pre-alpha rhythm suggests frequency-specific network dysfunctions that remain poorly understood.ObjectiveIn the present study we tested the hypothesis that electroencephalography (EEG) recordings in DLB patients may show abnormal cortical functional connectivity.MethodsResting-state EEG activity was recorded in 73 DLB, 70 AD, and 41 healthy control (HC) participants from seven Euro

Electroencephalographic manifestations of intracranial hypertension in a patient with ventriculoperitoneal shunt malfunction.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating epileptic seizures from manifestations of intracranial pressure (ICP) fluctuations can be challenging in patients with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS). We report a case of intermittent VPS malfunction presenting with focal motor events initially misdiagnosed as refractory status epilepticus. A 27-year-old man with childhood-onset hydrocephalus treated with a right VPS and a previous history of focal epilepsy-managed with levetiracetam, perampanel, and lacosamide-presented with increased seizure frequency and intermittent headaches. Initial treatment included cont

Exposure of concealed right bundle branch block in Wolff-Parkinson-White type B by pacing from the vicinity of the A-V node.

In two infants with Wolff-Parkinson-White type B, right bundle branch block was concealed during sinus rhythm and pacing from close to the atrial entrance of the right-sided accessory pathway. However, pacing from the vicinity of the A-V node, the A-V node itself, and the His bundle exposed the right bundle branch block by producing exclusive ventricular activation through the normal, A-V nodal His-Purkinje pathway. In addition, pacing from close to the A-V node also resulted in fusion beats characterized by absence of delta waves with (pseudo) normal QRS complexes and short H-V intervals. Fal

Differential effects of GABAB receptor subtypes, {gamma}-hydroxybutyric Acid, and Baclofen on EEG activity and sleep regulation.

The role of GABA(B) receptors in sleep is still poorly understood. GHB (γ-hydroxybutyric acid) targets these receptors and is the only drug approved to treat the sleep disorder narcolepsy. GABA(B) receptors are obligate dimers comprised of the GABA(B2) subunit and either one of the two GABA(B1) subunit isoforms, GABA(B1a) and GABA(B1b). To better understand the role of GABA(B) receptors in sleep regulation, we performed electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings in mice devoid of functional GABA(B) receptors (1(-/-) and 2(-/-)) or lacking one of the subunit 1 isoforms (1a(-/-) and 1b(-/-)). The dis

Quantitative EEG findings in patients with acute, brief depression combined with other fluctuating psychiatric symptoms: a controlled study from an acute psychiatric department.

BACKGROUND: Patients with brief depressive episodes and concurrent rapidly fluctuating psychiatric symptoms do not fit current diagnostic criteria and they can be difficult to diagnose and treat in an acute psychiatric setting. We wanted to study whether these patients had signs of more epileptic or organic brain dysfunction than patients with depression without additional symptomatology. METHODS: Sixteen acutely admitted patients diagnosed with a brief depressive episode as well as another concurrent psychiatric diagnosis were included. Sixteen patients with major depression served as contro

Applications of minimally invasive multimodal telemetry for continuous monitoring of brain function and intracranial pressure in macaques with acute viral encephalitis.

Alphaviruses such as Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) and Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) are arboviruses that can cause severe zoonotic disease in humans. Both VEEV and EEEV are highly infectious when aerosolized and can be used as biological weapons. Vaccines and therapeutics are urgently needed, but efficacy determination requires animal models. The cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis) provides a relevant model of human disease, but questions remain whether vaccines or therapeutics can mitigate CNS infection or disease in this model. The documentation of alphavirus e

The influence of N2-O2 and He-O2 saturation diving on electroencephalogram of human bodies.

This paper reports the changes of the EEG of human bodies during saturation exposure at different depths to different mixed gases. The results of the research show that the most obvious on EEG was the appearance of diffused slow waves, usually theta waves of 4-7 times/s, and delta waves of 2-3 times/s within individual subjects. The EEG changes at 50 m were more obvious than those at 36.5 m. With the prolonging of time under high pressure, the EEG had some improvements, for instance, the slow waves decreased and the alpha waves increased. There was a certain relationship between these changes

Cortical activity modulations underlying age-related performance differences during posture-cognition dual tasking.

To date, no systematic research investigating cortical correlates of performance changes in dual tasking has been reported in the elderly population. Thus, we monitored whole-scalp cortical activations (EEG) during both single task and posture-cognition dual tasking with the main goal of understanding cortical activity modulations underlying age-related differences on posture-cognition dual tasking conditions. Postural and cognitive data analyses showed that elderly people had decreased cognitive performance even during challenging single cognitive tasks. Working memory impairments in the elde

Neurons of the human subthalamic nucleus engage with local delta frequency processes during action cancellation.

The subthalamic nucleus (STN) is a critical hub for inhibitory control, implicated in decision making under conflict and impulsivity. Delta frequency oscillations have also been associated with inhibitory control processes, yet the relationship between human STN neuronal activity and local delta frequencies during response inhibition remains unresolved. Here we recorded STN neurons and local field potentials in patients with Parkinson's disease performing a stop-signal reaction time task during deep brain stimulation surgery. Approximately half of STN neurons responded to a diverse set of beha

Relationship between preinduction electroencephalogram patterns and propofol sensitivity in adult patients.

PURPOSE: To determine the precise induction dose, an objective assessment of individual propofol sensitivity is necessary. This study aimed to investigate whether preinduction electroencephalogram (EEG) data are useful in determining the optimal propofol dose for the induction of general anesthesia in healthy adult patients. METHODS: Seventy healthy adult patients underwent total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA), and the effect-site target concentration of propofol was observed to measure each individual's propofol requirements for loss of responsiveness. We analyzed preinduction EEG data to ass

Frontal intermittent rhythmic delta activity (FIRDA) in pial-dural arteriovenous malformation.

We report a case of FIRDA associated with a pial-dural arteriovenous malformation (AVM). The patient presented with headaches, papilledema and partial oculomotor nerve palsy. CT scan had failed to discover the AVM. After partial embolization of the AVM, the patient's symptoms and signs resolved, and the FIRDA disappeared. FIRDA has been thought to be caused by frontal lobe ischemia or periventricular edema. It has not been reported in benign intracranial hypertension (BIH). We postulate that the FIRDA in this case was due to the circulatory "steal" effect of the AVM, and not to the intracrania

Infraslow scalp electroencephalogram is closely linked to transient neurological events in Moyamoya disease.

BACKGROUND: Transient neurological events (TNEs) commonly occur following direct revascularization for moyamoya disease (MMD). Although changes in the cerebral blood flow (CBF) may be linked to TNEs, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Herein, we investigated the relationship between TNEs and EEG to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and pursue the clinical utility of EEG as a TNE biomarker. METHODS: Twenty-six hemispheres in 22 patients with MMD aged ≥15 years who underwent revascularization were analyzed. Scalp electroencephalography (EEG) and single-photon emission computed tomograp
