We conducted a retrospective study to analyze the histologic and immunohistochemical findings in three main types of odontogenic cyst. We studied 90 archived cystic jaw lesions: 30 dentigerous cysts, 30 keratocystic odontogenic tumors, and 30 radicular cysts. The cyst types were identified on the basis of clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic findings. Immunohistochemical analyses included staining with Ki-67, p53, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), cytokeratin (CK) 8, CK14, CK17, and CK18. Cell immunopositivity was evaluated for the entire epithelium. The criteria for Ki-67 and p53 …

This article reviews a myriad of common and uncommon odontogenic cysts and tumors. The clinical presentation, gross and microscopic features, differential diagnosis, prognosis, and diagnostic pitfalls are addressed for inflammatory cysts (periapical cyst, mandibular infected buccal cyst/paradental cyst), developmental cysts (dentigerous, lateral periodontal, glandular odontogenic, orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst), benign tumors (keratocystic odontogenic tumor, ameloblastoma, adenomatoid odontogenic tumor, calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor, ameloblastic fibroma and fibroodontoma, odonto

Cysts encountered in the head and neck typically arise from epithelium that would normally be programmed to form teeth or tooth-supporting structures (odontogenic epithelium). These cysts come with a confusing array of similar-sounding names and histopathologic features that are sometimes shared between conditions. Here we describe and contrast the relatively-common lesions: hyperplastic dental follicle, dentigerous cyst, radicular cyst, buccal bifurcation cyst, odontogenic keratocyst, glandular odontogenic cyst, and the less-common gingival cyst of the new-born and thyroglossal duct cyst. The…

The four most frequent odontogenic cysts were radicular cysts (35.12%), dentigerous cysts (25.77%), odontogenic keratocysts (22.58%) and residual cysts (12.98%).

Carcinomas from an odontogenic cyst are not common, yet when they occur, squamous cell carcinomas are the most often seen. Among these cysts, the malignancy of keratocysts or dentigerous cysts are most likely. In contrast, a malignant transformation of a radicular cyst to an intraosseous carcinoma is extremely rare. In this case report, an intraosseous carcinoma arising from an odontogenic cyst in a 26-year-old male patient is presented. This case report clearly demonstrates the importance of the clinician's awareness of the malignant potential of apparently innocuous cystic lesions.

Constitutional hemizygous inactivation of PTCH, the Shh signaling pathway gene that moderates the signal, manifests itself as nevoid basal c … signaling, recently observed during tooth development, lead us to investigate PTCH association with dentigerous cysts, the other major noninflammatory cyst of odontogenic origin. We report here that PTCH appears to be inactivated in dentigerous cysts, suggesting that it is responsible for their genesis as well. More generally, if our similar observations of incomp …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether non-keratocystic lesions respond to decompression and to quantify the magnitude of change.
STUDY DESIGN: A r … ions.
RESULTS: Lesion diagnosis did not significantly predict percent reduction or rate of change. Dentigerous cysts showed the greatest mean reduction (64.4%), followed by periapical (46.3%) and inflammatory cysts (45.2%). Ameloblastomas demonstrated variable response, with two increasing in size during decompression.
CONCLUSION: Decompression provides meaningf …

A residual cyst, as the name implies, is a radicular, lateral periodotal, dentigerous or any other cyst that has persisted after it's associated tooth has been lost. Residual cysts show more predilection in males and they commonly affect the maxillary region. Usually, residual cysts are asymptomatic and calcifications occurring in the residual cysts are quite rare. We are reporting a case of symptomatic residual cyst, associated with calcifications involving the anterior region of the body of the mandible in a 60-year-old male patient. The pathogenesis, clinical, radiological features and diff

The aim of this study was to investigate the reactivity of the epithelial linings of the three major types of odontogenic cyst with a monoclonal antibody to proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA; clone PC10). PCNA expression was studied in odontogenic cysts (n = 31) and normal oral epithelium (n = 10) using a biotin-streptavidin method on routinely processed paraffin sections. PCNA+ cells were counted manually and related to the length of basement membrane (mm) and the epithelial area (mm2) as determined by TV image analysis. The epithelial linings of odontogenic keratocysts (OKC; n = 11) c
