Three Serious Drug Interactions that Every Dentist Should Know About.

Patients with complex medical and drug histories are becoming more commonplace in dental practice. This article reviews three serious adverse drug interactions that are well supported by the literature and can impact dental practice. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) inhibit the renal excretion of lithium and lead to lithium toxicity. Metronidazole and fluconazole inhibit the metabolism of warfarin by blocking cytochrome P-450 2C9 (CYP-2C9), the major metabolic pathway of warfarin, with the end result being dramatic increases in patients' international normalized ratios (INRs) and

The American Dental Association, through the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), now recognizes Orofacial Pain as an area of advanced education in Dentistry. It is mandated by CODA that postgraduate orofacial pain programs be designed to provide advanced knowledge and skills beyond those of the standard curriculum leading to the DDS or DMD degrees. Postgraduate programs in orofacial pain must include specific curricular content

Acute arsenic self-poisoning for suicidal purpose in a dentist: a case report.

Arsenic is a classical poison that has been historically used since ancient times for homicidal purposes. More recently, episodes of deliberate or unintentional arsenic self-poisoning have been increasingly reported. We describe here a case of a 77-year old male patient with a history of major depression, who attempted suicide by ingestion of 4 g of arsenic trioxide. The man, a dentist by profession, used arsenic preparations for pulp devitalization. The patient was admitted to our hospital 5 h after arsenic ingestion with nausea and vomiting. Plain radiograph of the abdomen showed radio-opaqu

For this reason, dentists are in a strategic position to recognize and report suspected cases. The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge and attitudes of Nigerian dentists towards child abuse. A descriptive survey was conducted among 175 dentists in Nigeria. Results revealed that physical abuse, neglect and emotional abuse w…

[Early detection and prevention of oral precancer. An enquiry among dentists in Switzerland].

Squamous cell carcinoma ranks eighth among the most common tumors worldwide. In many cases, these tumors develop from a preliminary phase (precancerosis). For different reasons, these preinitial carcinomas are recognised too late or not at all. The aim of this study was to find out about the dentists' state of knowledge, their management of these tumors and their readiness for a prevention campaign among Swiss dentists. 800 questionnaires were mailed or handed out to dentists nationwide. 22% of the questionnaires were returned. 64% of the dentists stated to be highly motivated for further educ…

Fifteen inches from cancer: early recognition of facial lesions by the dentist.

Skin cancer is an increasing malignancy worldwide, and dentists are in a good position to observe their patients' faces for worrisome lesions. Most skin cancers are caused by actinic damage. The dentist must appreciate the characteristics of sun damage and be familiar with the clinical signs and symptoms of the more common premalignant and malignant facial lesions to appropriately evaluate the face. We review the features of freckles and moles, as well as those of seborrheic keratosis. Sun damage is discussed to aid in understanding the etiological role of ultraviolet exposure in the developme…

A review of sleep disorders. The history and diagnosis of sleep disorders related to the dentist.

The last 4 decades have seen the emergence of a new medical specialty, sleep medicine. In response to an unfulfilled clinical need, and fueled by better understanding of the significance of sleep disorders, sleep medicine developed medical solutions for age-old problems with sleep and wakefulness. Sleep-disordered breathing has played a central role in this story. Therapy and management offered by the dentist has become recognized as an important aspect of care for patients with SDB. Dentists who offer this service need to become acquainted with the multifactorial nature of sleep medicine to s…

Eyeglasses to maintain flexibility of vision for the older dentist: the Otago dental lookover.

Presbyopia is inability of the eye to accommodate and provide clear images of near objects. It affects all dentists in middle age, when "near point," the nearest point at which the eye can focus accurately, exceeds ideal working distance. Dentistry has unique visual demands and many older dentists have been shown to be working with less-than-optimal visual efficiency and comfort. This paper discusses methods for improving vision in the dental operatory and details a new design for eyeglasses suitable for the presbyopic dentist.

The dentist as a referral source of first episode head and neck cancer patients.

This analysis was conducted to shed more light on the role of the dentist in the detection and referral of patients with head and neck cancer. No other study of the referral practices of dentists has examined the characteristics of these patients in contrast to those referred by physicians to understand the selection of pathways to care. The findings reported here indicate that: "anatomical provinces" exist for both types of practitioners that are well recognized by the lay community and perhaps reinforced by the health field; advanced stage referrals on the parts of physicians may occur becau…
