Fecal microbiota as a predictor of acupuncture responses in patients with postpartum depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: There are several clinical and molecular predictors of responses to antidepressant therapy. However, these markers are either too subjective or complex for clinical use. The gut microbiota could provide an easily accessible set of biomarkers to predict therapeutic efficacy, but its value in predicting therapy responses to acupuncture in patients with depression is unknown. Here we analyzed the predictive value of the gut microbiota in patients with postpartum depressive disorder (PPD) treated with acupuncture. METHODS: Seventy-nine PPD patients were enrolled: 55 were treated with

The prevalence and risk factors of suicidal ideation in women with and without postpartum depression.

AIM: Suicidal ideation (SI) is a severe mental health issue in the postpartum period. As depression is a major risk factor of SI, it is often considered that the risk factors of SI are the same as those of postpartum depression. However, SI occurs in women without postpartum depression as well. The aim of this study is to separately examine the prevalence and risk factors of SI in postpartum women with and without depression. METHODS: We used data of 5688 postpartum women from a 2021 Japanese nation-wide survey, whose age and geographical distributions were nationally representative. Postpart

Trait mindfulness facets as a protective factor for the development of postpartum depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression has a prevalence rate of up to 17%. As there are many negative consequences of postpartum depressive symptoms, it is important to examine possible protective factors, such as trait mindfulness. Since postpartum depressive symptoms are variable over time between and within individuals, this study focused on the possible association between facets of trait mindfulness and trajectories of postpartum depressive symptoms throughout the first postpartum year. METHODS: A subsample of 713 women that participated in the HAPPY study completed the Three Facet Mindfulnes

The early postpartum period - Differences between women with and without a history of depression.

Depression is a highly recurrent disorder. When in remission, it affords an important opportunity to understand the state-independent neurobiological alterations, as well as the socio-demographic characteristics, that likely contribute to the recurrence of major depressive disorder (MDD). The present study examined 110 euthymic women in their early postpartum period. A comparison was made between participants with (n = 20) and without (n = 90) a history of MDD by means of a multimodal approach including an fMRI experiment, assessment of hair cortisol concentration (HCC) and a clinical anamnest

Research Recommendations on the Effects of Postpartum Depression and Pain on Infant Care and Development.

Postpartum depression is one of the most common complications of childbirth, and another is pain. A growing body of research shows that the severity and duration of postpartum pain can increase a woman's risk for postpartum depression. Postpartum depression and pain negatively affect maternal well-being, and postpartum depression has been associated with adverse outcomes in children. However, there is a dearth of information about the effects of postpartum depression and pain on infant care and development. The objectives of this commentary were to highlight the need to address this gap in the

Is maternal disclosure of HIV serostatus associated with a reduced risk of postpartum depression?

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic diseases that include HIV infection are at increased risk of experiencing postpartum depression. In addition, social isolation has been associated with depression among women with HIV. Yet, it is unclear whether disclosure of HIV serostatus before the birth is associated with the risk of postpartum depression. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether maternal disclosure of her positive HIV serostatus before the delivery is associated with the risk of early postpartum depression. STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective cohort study, women who

The incidence of and risk factors for postpartum depression at an urban maternity clinic in Turkey.

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum depression (PPD) is an important health issue that affects not only mothers, but also entire families. Postpartum follow-up should address emotional and psychological issues, as well as physical issues, especially in those at risk. This study aimed to determine the incidence of PPD and the associated risk factors in a group of new mothers undergoing routine follow-up at an urban maternity clinic. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study investigating the relationship between PPD and various factors. A total of 187 women that presented to a university hospital for routine

Individual and combined effects of postpartum depression in mothers and fathers on parenting behavior.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric anticipatory guidance has been associated with parenting behaviors that promote positive infant development. Maternal postpartum depression is known to negatively affect parenting and may prevent mothers from following anticipatory guidance. The effects of postpartum depression in fathers on parenting is understudied. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose with this work was to examine the effects of maternal and paternal depression on parenting behaviors consistent with anticipatory guidance recommendations. METHODS: The 9-month-old wave of data from a national study of children and t

Interrelationships of postpartum depression and childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder with birth memory characteristics among postpartum women: A network perspective.

BACKGROUND: Despite prior research linking birth memory characteristics to postpartum depression (PPD) and childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD), the intricate pathways are not fully understood. Using network analysis, this study shifts the focus from overall diagnoses to specific symptoms, aiming to uncover the network structure connecting PPD and CB-PTSD symptoms with birth memory characteristics. METHODS: Primiparous women aged 18 to 49 years who had a vaginal delivery and had a child aged 0 to 12 months were recruited from three tertiary level public hospitals in Chi

The associations between paternal postpartum depressive symptoms and testosterone and cortisol levels in hair over the first two years postpartum.

BACKGROUND: After the birth of a child, also fathers may develop postpartum depression. Altered steroid hormone concentrations are discussed as a possible underlying mechanism, as these have been associated with depressive symptoms in previous studies outside the postpartum period. While higher paternal testosterone levels have been found to protect against paternal postpartum depressive symptoms (PPDS), an association between higher cortisol levels and PPDS has been seen in postpartum mothers, with no comparable studies available on fathers. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate cross-s

Association between labor and delivery pain and postpartum pain with symptoms and clinical diagnosis of postpartum depression in patients with overweight and obesity.

PURPOSE: Childbirth pain has been associated with the risk for postpartum depression. However, existing studies have been limited by the use of depression screening tools as outcomes, and none to date have used a structured clinical interview for DSM-V (SCID), which is considered the gold standard for psychiatric diagnoses. This study aimed to quantify the relationships between labor and postpartum pain and postpartum depression diagnosis detected by SCID, as well as depression symptoms detected by the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD) screening tool, among a high-risk

Community Interventions for Addressing Postpartum Depression Across the United States: A Narrative Review.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common yet underdiagnosed mental health condition affecting a substantial proportion of new mothers in the United States. Its consequences can be severe, impacting maternal well-being, infant development, and family dynamics. PPD is particularly prevalent in underserved communities, where socioeconomic hardship, limited access to healthcare, cultural stigma, and systemic inequities intensify the risk. Addressing these disparities requires interventions that move beyond traditional clinical approaches and focus on the social, emotional, and environmental determi

Family expectations reduce the risk of postpartum depression among mothers but not fathers.

Postpartum depression is a common and serious mental health condition affecting both mothers and fathers and is especially common among low-income and racially and ethnically minoritized groups; however, it is significantly undertreated. Birth transitions are well documented as a period of heightened risk for relationship decline, and poor relationship adjustment is a strong risk factor for postpartum depression. Relationship education has consistently been shown to reduce relationship distress, with growing evidence of positive spillover effects on both partners' mental health, making it a pr

Postpartum Suicidality beyond Depression: a Systematic Review of Risk Profiles and Prevention Gaps.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Suicidal ideation and behavior during the postpartum period are increasingly recognized as important contributors to maternal morbidity and mortality, particularly in high-income countries. Although postpartum depression is a well-established risk factor, emerging evidence suggests that suicidality may also occur independently and therefore remain underrecognized in clinical practice. This systematic review aimed to synthesize current evidence regarding the prevalence of suicidal ideation and behavior in the postpartum period and to identify associated risk factors. RECENT

Postpartum Depression: Effects of Access to Information on Treatment Preferences in Spanish Population.

BACKGROUND: There are a number of effective treatment options available to women with postpartum depression (PPD). However, women often do not receive information about such options to help them make an informed choice. AIMS: To determine the treatment preferences of women with PPD in Spain, to explore how exposure to evidence-based information influences these preferences, and to analyze whether these preferences are attended to by health professionals. METHODS: A quasi-experimental pre-post survey study was designed, using an online questionnaire including the Edinburgh Postnatal Depressio

Interpregnancy interval and maternal postpartum depression and anxiety: findings from the APrON cohort.

Shorter interpregnancy intervals (IPI) are linked to adverse maternal health outcomes, such as pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes mellitus. The link between IPI and maternal mental health has not been examined despite its potential clinical implications. The aim of this study was to examine associations between IPI and postpartum symptoms of depression (PPD) and anxiety (PPA). We retrieved data from the APrON study. Mothers (n = 613) completed the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale to assess depression and the Symptoms Checklist-90 to assess anxiety within 1 year of the second child's d

Adverse perinatal events are associated with postpartum depression and anxiety in women veterans.

Certain childbirth-related events-including preterm delivery and emergency cesareans-can involve threat to life of woman and child. Limited research has considered maternal mental health following these experiences. Women veterans in a national survey study reported information about prior pregnancies, including gestational age at delivery (coded to represent preterm birth), infant birthweight (categorized to indicate low birthweight), and whether delivery involved an emergency cesarean. Generalized linear mixed-effects models sampling 1780 pregnancies across 903 women tested associations betw

The association between nighttime fasting intervals and depression from early pregnancy to postpartum.

PURPOSE: Nighttime fasting intervals (NFIs; i.e., the longest period between the last eating episode of the day and the first of the next day) are associated with depressive symptoms in non-pregnant populations. However, this chrono-nutrition indicator has rarely been explored in the perinatal period, when individuals experience dramatic physiological and psychological changes. We explored potential associations between NFIs and depressive symptoms during the perinatal period. METHODS: This secondary analysis included 232 individuals with pre- pregnancy body mass index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m². Partic
