Ticks are vectors of bacterial, viral, and protozoan pathogens and represent a growing public health concern in the United States and worldwide. In California, vector surveillance has largely focused on Ixodes pacificus, the major vector of the spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi. However, the presence of multiple medically important Dermacentor species may harbor additional, understudied pathogens. To address this gap, broad pathogen screening was conducted on ticks collected from Siskiyou, Humboldt, Trinity, and Mendocino counties in Northern California, using multiplex quantitative PCR targeti…

BACKGROUND: Ticks and tick-borne diseases play a major role in companion animal health. Additionally, the European tick fauna is changing, for instance due to the spread of Dermacentor reticulatus, displaying a higher likelihood of winter activity than Ixodes ricinus. Therefore, we investigated current tick infestations in dogs and cats in Germany and in parts of Austria and the seasonal infestation risk.
METHODS: Overall, 219 veterinary practices were invited to collect ticks from cats and dogs on a monthly basis. Ticks were morphologically identified and female I. ricinus specimens were mea…

Ticks are important ectoparasites that are capable of transmitting multiple classes of pathogens and are currently linked with many emerging … e other common tick species of medical importance (Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Ixodes scapularis, and Dermacentor variabilis) using Bouin's solution. While this technique may require further optimization for other tick species, we described a feasible protocol that uses commonly available tools, reagents and standard histologic equipment. This should allow any …

Ixodidae ticks are vectors and reservoirs of several species of rickettsiae, and tick-borne rickettsioses are reported worldwide. This study … p-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) targeting ompB gene. Out of 34 tested tick pools, 2 from Dermacentor marginatus, 1 from Ixodes ricinus, and 1 from Rhipicephalus turanicus resulted positive. Nucleotide sequences of amplicons showed high similarity with sequences from Rickettsia slovaca, Rickettsia raoultii, Rickettsia helvetica, and Rickettsia felis …

Two species of Babesia were isolated from naturally infected sheep in the eastern part of Gansu province. One of the species was identified as B. ovis, while the another one seems as yet to be an unidentified Babesia species. The latter could be transmitted transovarially by Haemaphysalis longicornis. It was shown that larvae and nymphs transmit the organism to sheep and goats with a prepatent period of 5-28 days. As the carrier period of B. ovis is longer than that of the larger species and the prepatent period of the larger Babesia is shorter than that of B. ovis, it was possible to isolate

Computer models were developed to simulate the effects of management technologies on populations of the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Say), principal vector of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) in eastern North America. The technologies modeled were area-wide acaricide application, acaricide-food-baited tubes for self-treatment by small mammals, dipping of dogs in acaricides, acaricide-impregnated plastic dog collars, reduction of small mammal host populations (host management), and removal of vegetation that protects free-living tick stages (vegetative management). Submodels fo…

Seven isolates of Rickettsia rickettsii were obtained from a skin biopsy, two whole-blood specimens, and from Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks from eastern Arizona. Molecular typing of seven isolates of R. rickettsii and DNA samples from two other Rh. sanguineus ticks infected with R. rickettsii was conducted by PCR and DNA sequencing of rompA and 12 variable-number tandem repeat regions (VNTRs). All DNA specimens from Arizona were identical to each other and to reference human and Dermacentor andersoni isolates of R. rickettsii from Montana in their rOmpA gene sequences and 10 VNTRs. Two of the…

An acute tick-borne rickettsiosis caused by Rickettsia heilongjiangensis was diagnosed in 13 patients from the Russian Far East in 2002. We amplified and sequenced four portions of three rickettsial genes from the patients' skin biopsy results and blood samples and showed that the amplified rickettsial genes belong to R. heilongjiangensis, which was recently isolated from Dermacentor sylvarum ticks in nearby regions of China. This rickettsia, belonging to subgroup of R. japonica, was previously suggested to be pathogenic for humans on the basis of serologic findings. We tested serum samples wi…

We evaluated an artificial capillary feeding method to infect nymphal Ixodes scapularis (Say) ticks with Borrelia burgdoeferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease. Thirty to 70% of the nymphs were infected after feeding for 2.5 h from glass capillary tubes filled with a solution of spirochetes. Capillary infection was stable and persisted in the nymphs for at least 10 d after feeding. Capillary feeding also maintained natural vector competence patterns because I. scapularis ticks acquired infection unlike Dermacentor variablis (Say), which did not become infected. Capillary infected I. scapula…

In order to elucidate the natural foci of North-Asia tick-borne spotted fever along the bank of Heilongjiang river, we used PCR/RFLP to detect spotted fever group rickettsiae in ticks and rodents. The results showed that the wild samples of Dermacentor silvarum, Haemaphysalis concinna and Apodemus agrarius, Microtus fortis, Clethrionomys rufocanus and Ondatra zibethica were all positive with amplification, but typhus rickettsiae, tsutsugamushi fever rickettsiae and Q fever rickettsiae were all negative. Futher RFLP analysis of amplified products with PstI and Rsal demonstrated that their restr…

In this paper I review diseases reported in both captive and free-ranging wapiti in western North America, with some reference to diseases i … liver fluke (Fascioloides magna). Ectoparasites of importance to wapiti are Psoroptes cervinus and Dermacentor albipictus. Nutritional diseases are not covered in this review.

A field study in northeastern Inner Mongolia, People's Republic of China, in June of 1985 demonstrated a spotted fever group rickettsiosis. Two strains of spotted fever group rickettsiae were isolated. One strain was obtained from the blood of a patient with an eschar, regional lymphadenopathy, and history of a recent tick bite. The other strain originated from ova of ticks, Dermacentor nuttalli. These represent the second isolate of a spotted fever group rickettsia from a human and the first isolate from tick ova in the People's Republic of China. Antibodies to these rickettsiae were demonstr…

The most common tick species was I. hexagonus (mean prevalence 37.5%, mean intensity 32.2), followed by I. ricinus (15.0%; 4.86), I. canisuga (4.8%; 7.71) and D. marginatus (3.7%; 3.45). Co-o …

OBJECTIVE: To study the existence of natural foci of Spotted Fever in Ninghua, Fujian province.
METHODS: Using DNA polymerase chain reaction and restriction endonuclease fragment length polymorphism analysis (PCR/RFLP) to detect spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) in ticks and rodents.
RESULTS: It was found that H. wellingtoni, H. yeni, and Dermacentor auratus were infected with Rickettsia sibirica; the DNA fragments were cloned, the PCR products from isolated strain NH-97 were antigenically and genotypically identical to Rickettsia sibirica. Rattus flavipectus were found infected with R.…

The geographic range of medically significant tick species has expanded across the United States, with Illinois experiencing increased tick populations and incidence of tick-borne diseases (TBDs) in recent decades. This study investigated the spatial distribution of three tick species: Amblyomma americanum (lone star tick), Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick), and Ixodes scapularis (blacklegged tick) in Illinois, using data collected through active surveillance from 2018 to 2022. A total of 476 records of 1414 ticks were analyzed. Spatial analytical techniques, including species distrib…
