Allergic contact dermatitis to nickel in children with atopic dermatitis.

We report two atopic boys with allergic contact dermatitis to nickel. Both children had early onset of atopic dermatitis and subsequently presented with infraumbilical dermatitis corresponding to the site of contact with metal snaps. A positive patch test response to 2.5% nickel sulfate in petrolatum was observed in both boys. Allergic contact dermatitis in patients with atopic dermatitis is not uncommon and probably occurs more often than recognized.

Occupational dermatitis in bakers: a clue for atopic contact dermatitis.

6 patients are described who developed contact dermatitis after cereal contact on atopic skin for periods of 2 to 20 years. 2 patients were wheat flour patch-test-positive. They had punch biopsies taken for standard histological and immunohistochemical investigation by labeling with monoclonal antibodies, anti-DR and anti-IgE. Sections showed features of contact dermatitis. There were many dendritic cells located perivascularly in the papilla and in the epidermidis, intensely positive for monoclonal anti-IgE antibody. In control atopic subjects, there were a few perivascular IgE positive cells

Allergic Contact Dermatitis of the Vulva.

BACKGROUND: While previous studies have investigated allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in patients with chronic vulvar complaints, data on the clinical relevance of patch test results, particularly from spices and herbs series, remain limited. OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency and clinical relevance of contact sensitisation to allergens in the European Baseline Series (EBS) and a spices and herbs series in patients with chronic vulvar complaints. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on all patients with chronic vulvar complaints who underwent patch testing with the EBS and sp

Unilateral contact dermatitis of the chest.

Unusual distributions of contact dermatitis often lead to identification of the offending agent. We present a case of unilateral dermatitis of the chest developing in a patient with a history of allergy to metal. A name tag attached magnetically to his work uniform was identified as the cause of the eruption. Unilateral eruption of the chest can be a manifestation of allergic contact dermatitis to metal objects in breast pockets or attached to clothing.

Contact dermatitis: one for the books.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a frequent problem, often caused from repeated exposure to an object or substance related to the patient's routine activities. We present a case of a well-demarcated, erythematous, scaly plaque on a finger caused from reading with an e-book device. Although metal from mobile devices can cause ACD, mobile device cases may cause irritation or contain additives that can also cause contact dermatitis. Similar presentations of contact dermatitis may become more common as technology use increases.

An Unusual Case of Contact Dermatitis.

We report a case of acute psoriasiform contact dermatitis of the forehead and scalp related to the use of a low-laser light cap. The patient had a positive patch test to dimethylol dihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDE), methylisothiazolinone, kathon CG, and cobalt. We believe that DMDE in the fabric of the cap was responsible for the allergic contact dermatitis in this case as the lesions resolved with cessation of cap use.

[Allergic contact dermatitis of the scalp].

Contact allergy represents an important differential diagnosis to other skin diseases of the scalp. The typical efflorescences, spreading in the periphery, pruritus, and the clinical history support the differential diagnosis. Since the scalp is particularly resistant to contact dermatitis, allergens applied to this area often produce dermatitis of the eyelids, ears and neck. Nevertheless, potent allergens such as para-phenylendiamine can also cause severe reactions of the scalp. The most important allergens eliciting contact allergy of the scalp are found in bleaches and dyes, shampoos and co

Identifying the causes of contact dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis results from skin contact with an exogenous substance. It can be caused by direct contact, airborne particles, vapours or light. Individuals of any age can be affected. The two most common variants are irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). ICD is more common and has a worse prognosis. Other less common forms of contact dermatitis include photocontact allergy and, in food handlers, protein contact dermatitis. ICD is a form of eczema and is induced by direct inflammatory pathways without prior sensitisation. Classical ACD is mediated by type

Allergic contact dermatitis of the vulva.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) of the vulva arises as a primary condition or develops secondary to topical agents. We aimed to describe the incidence of ACD in patients presenting with vulvar symptoms and to identify the allergens of most importance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using a database of the patch testing results from 3 geographically distinct sites, we identified patients tested to a gynecologic series between 2003 and 2010. Patients had patch testing to the standard European battery and a gynecologic series. Patch testing was in line with accepted universal

Contact dermatitis as a systemic disease.

Systemic contact dermatitis (SCD) is a condition occurring in previously sensitized individuals after systemic re-exposure to the same or cross-reacting substance. Systemic route of administration means uptake of an allergen via percutaneous, transmucosal, oral, intravenous, intramuscular, and inhalational routes, as well as through implants. The intimate mechanisms behind SCD are not yet fully understood, but it is thought to be a T-cell mediated delayed type hypersensitivity reaction. The most common allergens recognized to date are nickel, aminoglycoside antibiotics, corticosteroids, balsam

Contact dermatitis to a limb prosthesis.

PROSTHESIS USERS commonly develop various skin problems on the residual limb, directly under the prosthetic device when the device is in direct contact with the skin. Prolonged occlusion and humidity increase the likelihood of developing contact sensitivity to moisturizing creams, medicaments, and materials in the prosthesis itself.1 Allergic contact dermatitis to various prosthetic design materials is uncommon, and the relevance of positive patch-test results to chemicals present in prostheses may be difficult to establish. Most reports of allergic contact dermatitis to prostheses have been c

The epidemiology of occupational contact dermatitis.

Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) ranks first of all occupational diseases in many countries. The incidence rate is believed to be around 0.5-1.9 cases per 1000 full-time workers per year. Epidemiological studies play an important role in observing disease trends, analysing risk factors, and monitoring the effect of preventive measures. In this review article the lack of truly epidemiologic data on OCD and the difficulties of those studies are illustrated. The following issues are highlighted: case ascertainment and bias, the distribution of allergic and irritant contact dermatitis in the

The prognosis of occupational contact dermatitis.

Despite the development of new drugs and improvements in working conditions, the prognosis for recovery from contact dermatitis has not changed significantly over the past 50 years. This chapter reviews the prognosis for both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis and discusses the main reasons that contact dermatitis persists, including misdiagnosis and continued exposure to irritants and allergens.

[Allergic contact dermatitis in the Negev].

Allergic contact dermatitis can be acute or chronic and is caused by delayed hypersensitivity to allergens in the surroundings. This retrospective study, the first of its kind in the Negev district, included 150 patients with allergic contact dermatitis. Nickel was the most frequent allergen causing contact dermatitis in both females and males, while chrome was second in frequency. Most of those with positive reactions to patch tests, were females. In females it appeared relatively early, in the 3rd and 4th decades, while in males it tended to appear later. The first lesions most frequently ap
