Incidence and prevalence rates for occupational contact dermatitis in an Australian suburban area.

Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) regularly causes high levels of worker morbidity; however, this is often not reflected in available statistics. This study aimed to collect and verify OCD reports/referrals and generate disease estimates for a defined geographical area in Melbourne, Australia. Two methods of data collection were used. In the first method, 30 general practitioners (GPs), 2 dermatologists and 1 dermatology outpatient clinic within a defined area reported each worker with suspected OCD seen as part of routine practice. With the second method, workers living in the area who we

Is a worker's understanding of their diagnosis an important determinant of outcome in occupational contact dermatitis?

The possible effect of an individual's knowledge of their diagnosis on their disease outcome was examined in a group of 230 workers with occupational contact dermatitis. The workers were surveyed with an interviewer-administered questionnaire for an average of 5 years following a diagnosis of occupational contact dermatitis. 48% had allergic contact dermatitis and 52% had irritant contact dermatitis. There was a poor correlation between the workers' recalled diagnosis and the actual diagnosis, but better concordance with their recollection of patch test results. Only 33% correctly identified t

Occupational Allergic Contact Dermatitis due to Rubber Additives in Tunisia: A 27-Year Retrospective Study of Clinical and Occupational Characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Rubber additives are established causes of occupational allergic contact dermatitis (OACD), but data from North Africa are scarce. OBJECTIVES: To characterize OACD due to rubber additives in a Tunisian tertiary referral population and assess its impact on fitness for work. METHODS: A retrospective study included all adult patients diagnosed with OACD to rubber additives between 1998 and 2025. Patch testing was performed with the European baseline series, with additional rubber series in selected cases. Clinical, occupational and allergological data were analysed. Associations wit

Assessment of occupational exposure and spectrum of contact sensitization in metalworkers with occupational dermatitis: results of a cohort study within the OCCUDERM project.

BACKGROUND: Metalworkers occupationally exposed to metals, tools, metalworking fluids (MWFs), technical oils, gloves, skin care products etc. frequently suffer from occupational dermatitis (OD). OBJECTIVES: To investigate occupational exposure and to identify relevant occupational sensitizers in metalworkers with OD, and to evaluate suitability of current German patch test recommendations for this occupational group. PATIENTS AND METHODS: As part of the OCCUDERM project, occupational exposure of 230 metalworkers with suspected OD patch tested in the departments of dermatology in Göttingen an

Cases of occupational dermatitis and asthma in beauticians that were reported to The Health and Occupation Research (THOR) network from 1996 to 2011.

BACKGROUND: Beauticians are exposed to many potential allergens in their occupation. AIM: To identify the sources of occupational skin and respiratory disease reported in beauticians, with an emphasis on acrylate chemicals, and to investigate the trends over time. METHODS: We used the Health and Occupation Research (THOR) database to identify occupational disease in beauticians between 1996 and 2011. Trend analysis was carried out to look for any change in the allergens reported over this period. RESULTS: In total, 257 cases of contact dermatitis (CD) in beauticians were identified, which w

Occupational contact dermatitis in blue-collar workers: results from a multicentre study from the Danish Contact Dermatitis Group (2003-2012).

BACKGROUND: Blue-collar workers have a high risk of occupational contact dermatitis, but epidemiological studies are scarce. OBJECTIVES: To investigate allergic contact dermatitis in blue-collar workers with dermatitis registered by the Danish Contact Dermatitis Group. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patch test data from 1471 blue-collar workers and 1471 matched controls tested between 2003 and 2012 was performed. A logistic regression was used to test for associations. RESULTS: The blue-collar workers often had occupational hand dermatitis (p < 0.001). Atopic dermatitis was less commo

Contact allergy to preservatives in patients with occupational contact dermatitis and exposure analysis of preservatives in registered chemical products for occupational use.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to investigate risk factors for sensitization to preservatives and to examine to which extent different preservatives are registered in chemical products for occupational use in Denmark. METHODS: A retrospective epidemiological observational analysis of data from a university hospital was conducted. All patients had occupational contact dermatitis and were consecutively patch tested with 11 preservatives from the European baseline series and extended patch test series during a 5-year period: 2009-2013. Information regarding the same preservatives in chemical p

[Irritant effect of tensides on occupational dermatitis patients in hairdressing and nursing occupations. Comparative studies of healthy persons and neurodermatitis patients].

The irritational disposition of the skin was studied in a control group of 12 healthy persons, 8 patients with neurodermitis, 11 hairdressers with occupational dermatitis and 11 nurses with occupational dermatitis by using the Duhring-chamber-scarification test. For comparison, the alkali resistance test was also carried out. The results show that with the alkali resistance test the irritational disposition towards tensides may not be judged. The present findings show that the increased irritational disposition toward detergent substances seems to be a constitutional factor which favors the de

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis to Piperamido Nitrotoluene in pharmaceutical workers: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Imatinib mesylate is a first-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Piperamido Nitrotoluene, also known as F5, is an intermediate used in the manufacturing of imatinib. We present a case series of allergic contact dermatitis to F5 in pharmaceutical workers. METHODS: Four male pharmaceutical workers were referred between 2007 and 2021 with new dermatitis predominantly affecting the periorbital region. All were involved in the production of imatinib and particularly exposed to F5. Following medical history and examination, they underwent patch testing to standard series and F5 dilute

Art of prevention: Allergic sensitization through damaged skin: Atopic, occupational, and stasis dermatitis.

The prevention of allergic contact dermatitis hinges on maintaining the integrity of the skin barrier and responding appropriately when it is disturbed. Although intact skin is subject to sensitization via highly irritating allergens, such as poison ivy, acutely inflamed and chronically inflamed skin is subject to sensitization to allergens without inherent irritant potential. In the chronically inflamed state of atopic dermatitis, sensitization to proteins, such as food, also carries a risk for systemic contact dermatitis via ingestion of the allergen. Minimizing the development of irritant d

Occupational Contact Dermatitis: Workers' Compensation Patch Test Results of Portland, Oregon, 2005-2014.

BACKGROUND: Workers are exposed to potential irritants and allergens with constant introduction of new industrial chemicals in the workplace. OBJECTIVE: Characterize the final diagnoses, demographics, occupations, exposures, clinical presentations, patch test results, dermatologic histories, and risk factors of workers evaluated for suspected work-related allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 310 workers' compensation independent medical examinations evaluated for suspected work-related ACD was performed. Workers were seen in a community dermatology clin

Airborne irritant contact dermatitis and conjunctivitis after occupational exposure to chlorothalonil in textiles.

Chlorothalonil (tetrachloro-1,3-benzenedicarbonitrile, CAS 1897-45-6) is a pesticide that has been on the market for many years. It is used as a fungicide in agriculture, horticulture, and floriculture; as a wood preservative; and in paint. We report an epidemic of airborne irritant contact dermatitis, conjunctivitis, and upper airway complaints among seamstresses in a Portuguese trailer tent factory, which we attribute to chlorothalonil. All exposed workers had work-related skin symptoms. After patch testing, we showed that none of these were of allergic origin. Instead of allergic reactions,
